Press-Gazette

Former Green Bay Packers punter B.J. Sander, who was out of football last season, has been signed as a street free agent by the St. Louis Rams, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported.

Sander, 26, was the Packers' third-round draft choice in 2004, but was kept on the team's inactive list all season. In 2005, he averaged 39.2 yards on 64 punts in 14 games.

He was released Aug. 21, when the Packers decided late in training camp to go with free agent Jon Ryan as their punter for the 2006 season.

This is more typically how teams acquire punters.

Any truth to the rumor that the Rams had to out-bid Houston for his services?

Apparently, St. Louis forgot to ask for a tryout.

In a dome? maybe? remember how the one-nut wonder did in Tampa?

Tampa doesn't have a dome. They used to have an awesome statdium that the locals called the Sombrero, but then the new owners of the team threatened for a new stadium with less capacity and the Sombrero is now a parking lot. Damn them.

Yes, in a dome where the stadium staff can direct the air conditioning in the direction he is kicking. He's already got the pooch kick down.

 of course i know Tampa doesn't have a dome, but they do have great kicking weather compared to GB

I figured you probably knew that; I was just looking for a reason to complain about a cool stadium being imploded for a greedy owner.

What? No emails from TT-haters that we should have signed Sander?

Sander may yet turnout OK. It is not uncommon for a punter to bounce around from team to team, off and on rosters for 3 or 4 years before they really catch on. Besides, in 2005 Sander did very well for the first half season or more.

Patler, that was the point I was obliquely making in my post above - it is the more "normal" process to keep an eye out for punters, who do tend to bounce around for a few years. This only reinforces the point that a third round pick on a punter - outside of Ray Guy - is wasted. And nobody was calling BJ Sander the next Ray Guy.
