Green Bay Inks DT Kenderick Allen

posted 04/26/2006

Adding an experienced run-stopper to their defensive line, the Green Bay Packers Wednesday signed free agent Kenderick Allen. Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations Ted Thompson announced the addition.

Allen, a 6-foot-5, 328-pound defensive tackle out of Louisiana State, joins the Packers from the New York Giants, where he spent the previous two seasons.

In a reserve role, Allen played in 14 total games last year, recording 21 tackles (15 solo), two sacks and two fumble recoveries. In a division contest at Philadelphia (Dec. 11), he recovered a Mike McMahon fumble in overtime to give New York possession on the Eagles' 27-yard line, setting up the game-winning field goal.

Overall in three NFL seasons, Allen has played in 29 games with three starts, amassing 51 tackles (40 solo), three sacks and a pair of fumble recoveries.

A nondrafted free agent, Allen originally entered the NFL with the New Orleans Saints in 2003. He joined the Giants on waivers in 2004.

Not the biggest signing in the world, but depth on the D-line is always good.

Anybody know if TT has a daughter? This is starting to look like a scenario where the teenage daughter gets ahold of daddy's credit card and goes on a shopping spree.

Sounds like a reasonable investment by TT to me.

2005 scouting report
Strengths: Has outstanding size and strength. Can control the line and knock linemen back with his initial charge. Has good leg drive, uses his hands well and pursues down the line. Plays with good arm extension and is a strong tackler.
Weaknesses: Lacks quickness and foot speed. Has a bull rush but few other pass-rushing moves. Can play a little high and lose leverage.

Bottom Line: Allen is a good run-stopper, but he basically is a two-down player.

I wonder if he is considered an upgrade over Colin Cole, or if they feel they need another run-stopper.

Maybe they got him to be a sparring partner with Donnell Washington, they sound like twins.

Don't get excited about this one. He might make the team, but he was added for depth. He likely won't be pushing for a starting gig.

I like the signing. Because the Packers love to rotate their big guys inside and he'll be a good addition to the run D.

Interesting thing is, we don't know for sure if the new staff will rotate the D-line as much as in the past or not. Little things like that will make this an interesting season.

I like the signing. Tough BIG kid to keep O linemen off Hawk and Barnett

The Blue Dog may be on to something. Last year Washington made the 53 man roster based on potential. He'll have to earn it this year.

I found Allen's play grade from the Giant Insider (scout.com). Will add some nice depth.

Kenderick Allen – He played in all but two games, posting 21 tackles and a pair of stops along the way. Allen provided solid depth along the line, which dealt with its fair share of injuries. Grade: B.

I saw this guy a couple times last season and he is a pretty nice run stuffer.

One thing shermy killed was our depth. Taylor, Boerichter,Gardner,Manual and the big DT are all signs that our depth will start to get better. This will eventually make spec. teams better.
