Ricky Williams applies for reinstatement (http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ap-nfl-rickywilliams&prov=ap&type=lgns)

NEW YORK (AP) -- Ricky Williams, the former NFL star who played in Canada last season after being suspended for a year for substance abuse, has applied for reinstatement.

Williams' agent, Leigh Steinberg, said the running back, who will turn 30 in May, had sent a letter asking that he be allowed to return to the Miami Dolphins.

The NFL confirmed that Williams had sought reinstatement, for which he will be eligible after April 27, when he will have been suspended for a year. Dolphins spokesman Harvey Greene said the team had no comment because Williams is not yet eligible for reinstatement.

Williams, a former Heisman Trophy winner at Texas, was originally drafted by New Orleans when then-coach Mike Ditka gave up all his picks in the 1999 draft to get his rights. He was traded to Miami for two first-round draft picks after the 2001 season and rushed for 1,853 yards for the Dolphins in 2002 and 1,372 the next season.

But he abruptly retired shortly before training camp in 2004, then returned in 2005 to back up rookie Ronnie Brown. Williams rushed for 743 yards and a 4.4 yard average that year.

The suspension, handed down last year by former commissioner Paul Tagliabue, was Williams' fourth.

Williams' previous positive drug tests were for marijuana, which he acknowledged using. The latest test apparently involved a substance other than marijuana and may have been related to his interest in holistic medicine.

Steinberg said Williams has been teaching yoga in California since returning from Canada last December.

"He's told me that his interest in eastern philosophy has overcome his desire for mind-altering substances and has given him another outlet," Steinberg said. "He's in outstanding shape and he hasn't taken a lot of hits for a running back. I think he's still at the top of his game."

During the 2005 season, Williams laughingly described himself as weird and compared his career to a roller coaster. But he also dispelled his reputation as an aloof, selfish pothead, winning praise from teammates and winning the south Florida media's annual postseason Good Guy Award, given to the player most cooperative with reporters.

Williams has gained 7,097 yards in 1,757 carries during his NFL career and rushed for 47 touchdowns.

Last season with Toronto in the CFL, he ran for 526 yards on 109 carries and caught 19 passes for 127 yards. He missed two months because of a broken arm.

Pun intended? :P I'd say he's probably taken more "hits" than any other player currently in the league.

Anyhoo, is this guy too crazy to help the Pack? The guy can play ball, or at least he could. Who knows what he has left?

I wonder what the 'phins would want for him in trade ... maybe a 2nd-day conditional pick?

I wouldn't give up the last pick in the draft for this joker.

But you'd trade everything that was needed for Randy Moss? I don't get it...

Really, whats the difference?

Theirs a big difference. Randy Moss didn't quit the NFL and just come back for money. Plus a 30 year old Wr IMO is different from a 30 year old running back. Runnings back don't last as long. Another reason is it would piss me off to trade for a 30 year old running back who probably sucks, when we could of just kept AG.

Also, I am for trading for Moss, but I never said trade all that is needed. I would never given up a first for him and I dont even really want to give up a second. I loved the idea of Moss for a 3rd and a player (Ferguson).

But Moss did quit on his teammates, even walked off the field once, quits on plays all the time, doesn't finish routes, doesn't block, and all these things are OK?

This is what I don't get (not just picking on you PaCkFan_n_MD, just a general comment), How can you support Moss and NOT SUPPORT Ricky Williams? When you really boil it down, the differences aren't that much, the talent levels are the same, and if the goal is really to win, shouldn't BOTH be embraced? Consistency should also dictate that if you don't like acquiring Moss, you shouldn't like Williams either.

My opinion - We've already got Robinson, the last thing we need is two more head cases. but somebody has to run the damn ball.... and I have no current solution for that, and don't believe we'll have a first round rookie to tote the pigskin either.

I reason I wouldn't mind Moss is because I still believe that Moss can be a top 5 WR in this league. With Driver next to him and Jennings as a 3rd that idea just excites the hell out of me. Excluding last season, Moss's first season with the raiders was good (1000 yards and 13 td's). I still think he can dominant "when he wants to" and I think he would want to in Green bay. Moss really respects Favre and I honestly believe he would play for him all the time. Also, I don't want more than two season or basically I only want him while Brett is here. That way if he does become a problem he's gone after his second season. That’s also why I don't really want to give more then a 3rd because I would only want him for two years anyway.

I know their is a risk with Moss, but I believe it's worth it.

With Williams on the other hand, what is their to like? He's been out of football in the NFL for a while now and he's probably not even that good anymore. Also, on top of everything you would have to trade for him. Am sure he is no better than Chris Brown or any other free agent running back out their. Making a trade for Williams just wouldn't make sense to me.

What the hell, I'd take him! Bring another body into camp, what's the harm?
