Darnizzle Mock #4 – 2 Round Mock – April 15, 2007
1. Raiders Calvin Johnson WR, Georgia Tech I think the fact that Calvin Johnson is the #1 player on 32 teams boards, tells Al Davis, take the best player right now, worry about need later. Best pick Raiders could make. This could become a Reggie Bush/Mario Williams contract deal. There is talk that the coaching staff loves Brady Quinn, while Al Davis loves JaMarcus Russell. Where does Calvin Johnson come from then? Compromise, take the best player.
Other Possibilities: JaMarcus Russell, Brady Quinn

2. Lions Gaines Adams DE, Clemson JaMarcus Russell is discussed in the Lions war room, probably for 14:59 of their 15 minutes. But Gaines Adams has been on their list for a while, and for a defensive coach like Marinelli, he fits a need for a young team: Defense. Martz believes he can turn any QB into a player, so they’ll look there later.
Other Possibilities: Calvin Johnson, JaMarcus Russell, Brady Quinn, Joe Thomas

3. Browns JaMarcus Russell QB, LSU Brady Quinn and Russell are on the top of the Browns board, the fact Russell falls means the Browns snach him up, and disappoint millions across Ohio who have been asking for Brady Quinn.
Other Possibilities: Brady Quinn, Adrian Peterson

4. Buccaneers Amobi Okoye DE/DT, Louisville With all of the offense they want gone, the Bucs look to Defense. Okoye could play both DE and DT for them.
Other Possibilities: Calvin Johnson, JaMarcus Russell, Gaines Adams, Brady Quinn, Joe Thomas, LaRon Landry

5. Cardinals Joe Thomas OT, Wisconsin Their dream draft pick. If Arizona had the #1 pick, they would take Joe Thomas. To get him at #5, makes everyone there, including Matt Leinart, very happy. Don’t be surprise if they move him to RT to protect Leinart though.
Other Possibilities: Gaines Adams, Amobi Okoye, LaRon Landry, Alan Branch

6. Redskins Jamaal Anderson DE, Arkansas This is where the fun begins now. Redskins need help mostly on their DL. They take the next top DE after Gaines to help their pass rush. Don’t be surprised if Washington Trades their #1 pick though for the Ghost of Vince Lombardi, and talks Paul Hornung into returning to the game.
Other Possibilities: Gaines Adams, Amobi Okoye, Alan Branch

7. Vikings Brady Quinn QB, Notre Dame Minnesota can say all they want about the belief they have in Travaris Jackson. But lets not kid ourselves. Quinn comes in with an understanding of what their offense would be, and can start day 1 for the Vikes.
Other Possibilities: LaRon Landry, Jamaal Anderson, Patrick Willis, Adrian Peterson

8. Falcons LaRon Landy S, LSU If the Falcons do stay at 8, this is the guy they had on their radar to put with the rest of their young DB’s. Landry helps this defense right away.
Other Possibilities: Adrian Peterson, Adam Carriker, Patrick Willis

9. Dolphins Alan Brach DT, Michigan Dolphins continue to build their defense. Alan Branch would be the top rated defensive player at this point in the draft for them to take.
Other Possibilities: Levi Brown, Leon Hall, Patrick Willis

10. Texans Levi Brown OT, Penn St. It’s time for the Texans to care about this QB. David Carr got the shaft by the team by not helping him out. It’s time to put in an effort that they traded for in Matt Schuab.
Other Possibilities: Adrian Peterson, Ted Ginn Jr., Leon Hall

11. 49ers Ted Ginn Jr. WR, Ohio St. San Francisco is still looking defense, but I think the chance to keep improving their offense around former #1 pick Alex Smith, is too tempting
Other Possibilities: Adam Carriker, Reggie Nelson, Patrick Willis

12. Bills Adrian Peterson RB, Oklahoma Bills have a ton of holes. They could look at filling their defensive holes they have, but with Adrian Peterson sitting there, there is no question who they take.
Other Possibilities: Leon Hall, Patrick Willis, Lawrence Timmons

13. Rams Adam Carriker DE, Nebraska The Rams still need help on defense, and DL is a priority for them. Little is still solid, but aging. Their 2 interior guys, Glover and Kennedy, are old and young respectively, and not that productive. Carriker can come in as the RDE opposite Little, and develop as their starter right away.
Other Possibilities: Lawrence Timmons, Leon Hall

14. Panthers Greg Olsen TE, Miami John Fox has been in love with Greg Olsen since the combine. Their defense is solid, so getting offensive weapons is highly needed for the Panthers. How did Delhomme go from a stud to a dud? Easy, no weapons. Olsen will stretch the defense to help with the Panthers solid running game.
Other Possibilities: Reggie Nelson, Leon Hall, Lawrence Timmons

15. Steelers Patrick Wills LB, Ole Miss. Steelers need a LB, and some help at DB. Patrick Willis is a stud, and could play any position at LB, but will help in their transition to 4-3 defense.
Other Possibilities: Lawrence Timmons, Paul Posluszny, Leon Hall, Darrelle Revis, Aaron Ross

16. Packers Darrelle Revis CB, Pitt Packers need a RB? Don’t tell that to Ted Thompson. Expect the top defensive player on the board to be taken here. Revis has been up and down on draft boards, but his upside is huge. And for a defensive minded GM like Thompson, he can learn behind studs Al Harris and Charles Woodson, then in a few years, step in as the man.
Other Possibilities: Reggie Nelson, Paul Posluszny, Marshawn Lynch, Aaron Ross, Leon Hall

17. Jaguars Reggie Nelson S, Florida Jags look for some defensive help, and they find it in Reggie Nelson, who will immediately step in and be a starter day 1 with the Jags.
Other Possibilities: Dwayne Jarrett, Dwayne Bowe, Robert Meachem, Jarvis Moss

18. Bengals Lawrence Timmons LB, FSU Most of the Bengals Defense has been arrested, so they need to draft some defensive. Timmons is an excellent athlete, and could become a very good edge rusher for the Bengals 3-4 defense.
Other Possibilities: Aaron Ross, Dwayne Jarrett, Robert Meachem, Dwayne Bowe

19. Titans Leon Hall CB, Michigan Pac-Man Jones’ suspension makes a need at CB huge for the Titans. Leon Hall might be the top CB on many boards, so he is a huge value for the need the Titans have right now.
Other Possibilities: Dwayne Jarrett, Dwayne Bowe, Robert Meachem, Jarvis Moss, Aaron Ross

20. Giants Marshawn Lynch RB, Cal Giants need defense, but their offense is pretty much as gross as any in the NFL. Lynch and Brandon Jacobs could become a very good tandem together.
Other Possibilities: Brandon Meriweather, Michael Griffin, Paul Posluszny, Aaron Ross

21. Broncos Jarvis Moss DE, Florida Broncos need some help on the Defensive Line, and right now, no former Browns are available. So they take the top DL player at this point in the draft, and Jarvis Moss is their guy.
Other Possibilities: Aaron Ross, Chris Houston, Charles Johnson

22. Cowboys Aaron Ross CB, Texas Cowboys filled needs with Leonard Davis and Ken Hamlin, but they still want some CB help. Why not draft one of the top CB’s, who just happens to be home grown in Aaron Ross?
Other Possibilities: Darrelle Revis, Chris Houston, Michael Griffin

23. Chiefs Robert Meachem WR, Tennessee Chiefs aren’t in a rebuilding stage, they’re in a youth movement stage. They are trying to get younger, while staying competitive. No matter who they’re QB is, a weapon like Meachem could help any team.
Other Possibilities: Dwayne Bowe, Dwayne Jarrett, Chris Houston, Joe Staley

24. Patriots Paul Posluszny LB, Penn St. At this point of the offseason, the question is what DON’T the Patriots need? They would like to add some toughness still at their LB position, and bring in some youth for that position as well. Posluszny brings both.
Other Possibilities: Michael Griffin, Brandon Meriweather, Dwayne Bowe, Dwayne Jarrett

25. Jets Charles Johnson DE, Georgia Jets want to keep building their defense, and their DE’s are aging. Charles Johnson is the top DE at this point of the draft.
Other Possibilities: Michael Griffin, Brandon Meriweather, Justin Blalock

26. Eagles Dwayne Bowe WR, LSU Eagles have made good steps again in helping their defense, now it’s time to help Donavon, and take the best WR on the board.
Other Possibilities: Michael Griffin, Brandon Meriweather, Dwayne Jarrett

27. Saints Michael Griffin CB/S, Texas Cornerback is a big need for the Saints. Michael Griffin doesn’t fit as a true Corner, but he could play corner if need be. As a rookie, he doesn’t necessarily have to start right away, which would give him time to learn and develop.
Other Possibilities: Eric Wright, Dwayne Jarrett, Sidney Rice

28. Patriots Brandon Meriweather S, Miami 2 first round picks for a team that really doesn’t have many, if any, holes. One place they could use help is at Safety, and Brandon Meriweather is a perfect fit for their defense.
Other Possibilities: Dwayne Jarrett, Justin Harrell, Quentin Moses, Sidney Rice

29. Ravens Joe Staley OT, Central Michigan Ogden is possibly retiring, and even if he doesn’t, they could use some upgrades on their offensive line. They could look for Justin Blalock instead at this point, but it’ll probably be one of the 2. Staley is an amazing athlete, and could easily put on 20 pounds in muscle.
Other Possibilities: Dwayne Jarrett, Eric Wright, Antonio Pittman, Brian Leonard

30. Chargers Dwayne Jarrett WR, USC What does a team with a record of 14-2 need? How bout weapons for their young QB other than LT and Gates? Jarrett is a red zone threat, and the Southern Cal alum, will enjoy staying in Southern Cal.
Other Possibilities: Justin Harrell, Brian Leonard, Michael Bush, Antonio Pittman

31. Bears Justin Blalock OT/OG, Texas Bears could go in any direction. If they trade Briggs, the direction could be up in the draft. If they are still here, they will probably try to address their offensive line first. Blalock could come in and learn any position his first year, and by year 2, be starting and understand every spot.
Other Possibilities: Jon Beason, Sidney Rice, Justin Harrell, Ryan Kalil

32. Colts Justin Harrell DT, Tennessee What does the Super Bowl champion need? If not for injury, Harrell is a top 20, maybe top 10 pick. That’s value for a Champion.
Other Possibilities: Jon Beason, Eric Wright, Sidney Rice

Pittman on the 2nd round wouldn't surprise me, although TT would have to be awfully tempted to take Zach Miller if he is available there. Miller was considered by many to be the #1 TE in the draft until Olson nailed his combine.
Brandon Jackson could be had on the 3rd round, and would be a good fit at RB, although he's not as fast as Pittman.

agreed...I think part of me has hope in Ben Patrick in the 3rd, so that's why in my mind I "skipped" the TE in round 2, and went for more of a 'need' there.

Again, with Thompson...I could seriously see him just move down his board and end up with a RB in like round 4 or 5.

Very good but also very realistic mock draft. My only questions would be that I'm reading that Anderson is scaring many teams away with his work ethic and motor and Harrel should go top 25 but these are knitpicking and one could do that to any draft projection. Good job!
