1. He believes in taking the best player.
2. He believes the FA market is best used to fill holes.
3. He felt pretty strongly about signing LA who he felt would fill a hole.
4. If he really was going to draft Hawk there wouldn't be a hole.
5. He is not going to play it safe.
I want to jump on the national media band wagon and say Hawk is the sure pick. However, Thompson feels FA is to fill holes and he almost paid big money to fill one at LB. He may know that Hawk is not the pick and wanted to fill a hole that he projects to be open come opening day.
I'd say it's about 50 - 50. The national media almost makes me think Hawk but my gut tells me it's Vernon Davis. He's just to physically dominating to pass. I love things about each player but in the end I think Davis has the higher upside based on his unmatched physical skills. Based on my experience in the draft, the better athlete usually goes first and I think this year should be no different.
