Packers to be featured on Japan TV

The international appeal of the Green Bay Packers has extended across the Pacific Ocean.

The Packers haven't actually set foot in Japan since 1998, when they played a preseason game against the Kansas City Chiefs in Tokyo. But any fans in Japan who remember that visit might appreciate the special program coming their way soon on Japanese television.

Producer Naoyuki Kubo and cameraman Takue Saijo, working for a production company called F&F Inc., spent a few days prior to this year's NFL Draft in Green Bay, working on a portion of a special documentary on the NFL.

The show, slated to air on the Japanese satellite channel BS-i on May 27, is an in-depth look at the fairness and competitive balance of the NFL. It focuses on the draft, the league's way of fairly distributing incoming talent, and upon leaving Green Bay the F&F crew was headed to Radio City Music Hall in New York City to continue working on their piece.

But first, Kubo and Saijo got an up-close look at the Packers, the community, and the team's fans, highlighting the unique relationship between the team and its fans and shareholders and the ability of the team to remain competitive in the league's smallest market.

"The Packers have such a long history and it's a relatively small town," said Sean Ledden, the U.S. coordinator and translator for Kubo and Saijo. "When all the other teams come from major markets, it's great they've been able to flourish all these years."

The visitors captured portions of the Wisconsin-Green Bay/Packers steak fry fundraiser, showing players involved in a community event. Then they took a tour of Lambeau Field, gathering footage and interviewing other tour takers, and browsed through the Packers Hall of Fame.

They also interviewed a fan on the season-ticket waiting list and a member of the team's front office.

Clearly, the F&F crew was most impressed with the renovated Lambeau Field and how the stadium is so much a part of the team and so revered by the fans.

"When we hear about the numbers of people on the waiting list and how the stadium is being used year-round and how everyone wants to take part in the 'Packer myth,' it's really impressive," Ledden said. "It's a great stadium design-wise, and you can tell it's really the focus of attention in the town."

That report is especially cool considering that Japan is such an urban, densely populated country.
