Round 1/5 A.J. Hawk, LB Complete Bio Page
HT WT College 2005 Stats
6-1 247 Ohio State

Scouting Report: Few defensive players in this draft are as accomplished as Hawk. An All-American as a senior and two-time Big 10 Defensive Player of the Year, Hawk was also named the Vince Lombardi/Rotary winner as college football's Outstanding Lineman (offensive or defensive). On pure character and make-up, Hawk is already a pro's pro: he's as intense as they come, gritty, smart, and plays with an edge that will serve him well as a pro. He's also athletic enough to be a star, although some question whether he's a bit short to excel at the linebacker spot. Think of him as a taller version of Miami's Zach Thomas, a guy who makes exceptional reads, never gives up on plays, and loves to hit hard. When it comes to following the ball, Hawk is aptly named and will make any defense immediately better.

Impact: Even if the Packers didn't need help at linebacker, Hawk would have been hard to pass up here. But they do, as they had a tough time stopping runs up the middle and Hawk will help with that right away. A star at Ohio State, Hawk is a coach's dream who brings athleticism, grit, intensity, and high character to a team that needs a bit of a boost. With Brett Favre returning on offense it will be up to Hawk to step up right away on defense, something he's entirely capable of doing. Barring injury Hawk has the potential to be a Pro Bowler down the road, and he's also the type of charismatic personality the Pack will need once Favre decides to pack it up for the Hall of Fame. A superb pick by the Cheeseheads all 'round.

Round 2/47 Daryn Colledge, OT Complete Bio Page

Scouting Report: If there is a sleeper in this draft, it's Daryn Colledge. Literally from the North Pole, Colledge is a genuine late bloomer who has everything it takes to become a star in the NFL. He didn't get nearly the hype of many other linemen in the draft but he possesses elite speed, size, power, and leadership ability for his position. He's not terribly tall but too much height can sometimes be a drawback for NFL linemen if they can't stay low and get good leverage. Colledge came on strong late in his college career and has the makeup to just keep getting better. A true diamond in the rough.

Impact: First A.J. Hawk; now Colledge. Both are highly athletic players with fantastic leadership ability and character, and both may become fan favorites early on for the Pack. Colledge isn't as well-known as Hawk but he probably has as much talent in a comparative sense. He's a true late bloomer that has the skills of a tight end and the speed and mentality of an linebacker. The Pack can use some new blood on the offensive line and Colledge has the goods to become a leader for them there early on. A great pick in every sense.

Round 2/52 Greg Jennings, WR Complete Bio Page
HT WT College 2005 Stats
5-11 196 Western Michigan
GP Rec Yds Avg TD
11 98 1259 12.8 14
Scouting Report: The MAC's offensive MVP, Jennings is a hard worker with good speed and sure hands. He was major college football's most productive receiver in 2005, as his 98 catches led the nation. Jennings' 1,259 receiving yards marked his second consecutive year of improving his yardage output and he's a smart receiver who can make tough catches and get extra yardage after the carry. While his size isn't elite and he doesn't have jaw-dropping jets, Jennings is as reliable as they come and also excels as a punt returner. He also has great closing speed, a quality that makes him dangerous along with his excellent open-field moves. Jennings is very polished as a wideout, but needs to add some bulk to help out with his blocking game.

Impact: Is this Javon Walker's replacement? While Jennings doesn't possess the size or pure talent of Walker, he also doesn't have the same recent injury history either. With Walker on his way out of Green Bay, the Packers needed to re-stock at wideout and Jennings is a solid selection at this stage of the pick-off. He's a very reliable receiver who is accomplished and well-rounded, making him a good bet to be in the mix of targets for the returning Brett Favre. This choice makes a lot of sense for a team that needs to win now--while Favre is still around.

Round 3/67 Abdul Hodge, LB Complete Bio Page
HT WT College 2005 Stats
6-0 235 Iowa
GP Tk Ast Sacks FR-FF TD Int
12 158 60 1-4 2-3 0 0-0-0
Scouting Report: A talented and productive linebacker all through college, Hodge is ready for the next level. He sometimes gets overshadowed by Iowa corps partner Chad Greenway but Hodge has just as much pure talent. He uses above-average athleticism and a low center of gravity to line up his target and level devastating hits. Hodge is also a very solid tactician and a smart player who learned in college how to read plays and make good team calls. He has the potential to eventually lead a defense. The big question, of course, is his raw size. He's neither tall nor bulky for his position, and while he isn't small he's probably better suited to the inside than the outside. He probably needs to gain a little muscle mass to be a regular starter in the NFL, and there is some concern that adding weight might slow him down a little. His character and ability to learn give him good upside, but he's not a freakish athlete.

Impact: After picking up a game-ready linebacker in A.J. Hawk, now the Packers add a more long-term prospect for the middle of their defense. Hodge isn't far away but he'll need to work on both his game and muscle mass to be ready for Green Bay's planned resurgence in 2006. He won't likely be a starter right off the bat but stranger things have happened, and he does have the smarts and skill to get up to speed quickly. Like Hawk, Hodge is a leader on defense who can read plays very well. It's another interesting pick in the sense that the Pack seem to be targeting players who can step up quickly, an approach obviously geared toward trying to win while Brett Favre is still around.

Round 3/75 Jason Spitz, C Complete Bio Page
HT WT College 2005 Stats
6-3 304 Louisville
GP
12
Scouting Report: Powerful and intense, Spitz can be a real bulldozer in the running game. Few linemen his size have as much raw strength, and Spitz excels at plowing the field off the snap. He showed regular improvement in his years at Louisville and is a willing learner, a quality that will serve him well at the next level. Spitz is also capable of playing several positions, although he probably doesn't have the feet for the left side in the NFL. That less-than-elite agility can be a problem for him, as he doesn't excel in pass support or in blocking on the fly. When added to his lack of elite size, it likely leaves Spitz as somewhat of a situational guard until he can either add a little mass and/or get up to speed with the passing game. Regardless, he's a very good prospect because of his sheer strength and attitude.

Impact: The Packers do a good enough job of protecting Brett Favre, but they can still use some added quality depth for their offensive line. That makes Spitz a solid if not essential addition. He projects as a situational blocker for the running game to start with, but like the other picks Green Bay has made so far, he's a very mature guy who has initiative, fire, and leadership ability. The Packers more than any other team seem to be going for the high-character types on draft day, and it will no doubt serve them well in both the near and more distant future. Spitz won't really help protect Brett Favre anytime soon but he will eventually be a good one.
