Round 1/9 Ernie Sims, LB Complete Bio Page
HT WT College 2005 Stats
5-11 232 Florida State
GP Tk Ast Sacks FR-FF TD Int
13 72 50 2.5-23 1-0 0 2-3-0
Scouting Report: As talented and intense as they come, Sims was named as an all-ACC honorable mention in his 2005 junior year. He loves to tackle and always has his head in the game, able to lay back and pick up plays as they progress or switch gears and become a mad dog in attack mode. His speed, power, athleticism, and attitude are all top tier. The only debate about Sims involves his size. He's not as heavy or tall as most of the NFL players at his position, and that means he'll need to make some big adjustments at the pro level. It could mean a position switch, but Sims has the approach and confidence to find a way to succeed. He may be more effective on the inside, but whatever the case his overall package is too good to let the size issue overwhelm his progress.

Impact: In a draft already full of surprises, Sims ranks as one of the most surprising. The Lions do need help stopping the run, but they don't necessarily need that help in the linebacking corps. Sims has the potential to be a star, but he's also a little undersized and wasn't expected to go this high. Detroit GM Matt Millen was under pressure not to take a risky offensive talent, but he has instead taken a somewhat risky defensive talent. At least the Lions get some help on defense for a change, but Sims is by no means a slam dunk for stardom and he may not be fully ready to help out right away. With Boss Bailey still he'll have a solid mentor, but it's no sure thing Sims will be a starter for the Lions. His draft stock was rising recently, but who thought it was rising this much?

Round 2/40 Daniel Bullocks, SS Complete Bio Page
HT WT College 2005 Stats
6-0 213 Nebraska
GP Tk Ast Sacks FR-FF TD Int
12 83 37 0-0 1-2 1 1-12-0
Scouting Report: There is every chance Bullocks will be just as good as his twin brother Josh, who was drafted in the second round last year by the New Orleans Saints. Daniel is an aggressive player who excels in coverage situations and loves to pick off the football. He was very good throughout college and a team leader, but came on particularly strongly in the later stages of the season and was exceptional at the Senior Bowl. Bullocks followed that up by running an eye-popping 4.38 in 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine, which was faster than many expected. He could stand to be a bigger hitter and tackler. He is probably best suited to strong safety in the NFL. Bullocks has very good ball skills and a knack for making big plays, which should endear him teammates and fans alike.

Impact: It looks like the defense does not rest in Detroit. Embattled general manager Matt Millen seems to be taking a very consistent approach to this year's draft, avoiding high-profile offensive talent and instead focusing on beefing up a shaky defense. Safety wasn't a problem but Bullocks adds depth and talent there, complementing an improving young secondary. There are some questions about whether he'll be as good as his twin brother Josh (of the Saints), but Bullocks does have talent and will likely get some opportunities to shine early on. This pick suggests the Lions might be changing their philosophy a little, but one never knows with Millen.

Round 3/74 Brian Calhoun, RB Complete Bio Page
HT WT College 2005 Stats
5-9 202 Wisconsin
GP Rush Yds Avg TD
13 348 1636 4.7 22
Scouting Report: Overlooked by many because he sat out for a year, Calhoun rebounded with a superb 2005 in his one season with the Badgers. A versatile back who also excels in track, Calhoun is an intriguing prospect for NFL teams. While not prolific in college, he was very productive when given the chance and showed the ability to catch the ball and run through tacklers. He has the build, style, and lateral shiftiness of a speed back but the mindset of a fullback. There are obvious questions about his durability at the next level but his combination of intensity, athleticism, and versatility make him a definite sleeper. His quick success at Wisconsin shows he's also a fast learner. Calhoun's blocking is sub-par and needs work. He's unlikely to come out and start for any NFL team right away, but Calhoun has the talent-skill-character package to eventually win a job and be very good. For the right team he may be a true diamond in the rough.

Impact: Now that Matt Millen has made the safe picks to keep the critics off his back, he can revert to form and roll the dice on risky offensive talent. That's Calhoun, who only has only one big season to show on his resume and is not exactly of ideal size for the NFL game. Still, he does have intriguing potential and is a high-character type who isn't likely to pull a Charles Rogers on the Lions. He's likely a somewhat strategic pick who can not only push underachiever Kevin Jones, but act as a back-up and possible replacement if Jones doesn't pull his game together. Not a bad pick by Millen, but also not atypcial either.

I really like Detroit's picks, and Calhoun on the fast track will benefit him as well.
