OVERLAND PARK, KAN. -- Prized possessions earned through sweat and pain are in the hands of thieves. Police are looking for the burglars who broke into former NFL player Frank Winters' Overland Park home.
The crooks stole Winters' Super Bowl ring and other sports memorabilia. Winters' played center for the Green Bay Packers. He signed with the Packers in 1992 and stayed there for 11 years.
Thieves may have taken Winters' NFL prized possessions, but he has the memories that will last a lifetime. Overland Park police are hoping they can recover Winters' Super Bowl ring and other items stolen from his home on July 5.
Police were called to the home after Winters returned home and found his garage door open, and a window broken. When the officers arrived, they could tell a side door to the garage had been forced open.
The thieves stole more than $50,000 worth of property, according to the police report. The stolen goods include Winters' Super Bowl ring valued at $10,000, and his 1997 NFC Championship ring valued at $7500. Winters' also lost his signed picture of Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio and a Jeep SUV.
People who live in the neighborhood believe they're being targeted by thieves because several burglaries have happened there over the last couple of weeks.
Police said they've put pawn shops throughout the Metro on alert in case someone brings Winters' rings and other memorabilia in.
