I wouldn't expect much on the june 1st thing, with the cap going up this high. I think teams are gonna have to play the hand they have now, +/- the current free agents....

Hi Nick,

The biggest sleeper on the defense is Michael Montgomery. If the glimpses we got of him late last year, and the confidence the coaches have in him continues into this year, it could be really big. Hard to believe Ryan Pickett could be an upgrade over Grady Jackson. I'd settle for 80%. Remember how the defense fell apart when Grady was not in the lineup? We'll miss him for sure.

Abdul Hodge has to start. He'll be another Ray Lewis, imo.

A.J. Hawk speaks for himself, as does Nick Barnett. Winston Moss said of A.J. Hawk, "he's an upgrade, yes. and that's a huge understatement."

Hope like hell Charles Woodson is over the injury bug, and Manuel can compliment Nick Collins speed. And Nick Collins continues to improve. I'm not giving up on Ahmad Carroll. The guy is talented and seems to improve every game. Especially later last year.

Jimmy Williams the WR coach said his big challenge is to get Rod Gardner playing like he did early in his career. Gardener gave flashes of his talent last year, buy had too many drops. Have great hopes for Greg Jennings. Don't really think Fergy is going to return to pre Donavan Darius form. Marc Boentringer doesn't turn me on, but we'll see.

The RB's look very thin unless Ahmann and Najeh are back to 100% and stay healthy.

The offensive line still looks dangerous. Chad Clifton at LT, Kevin Barry at RT, Tauscher at guard, Scott Wells at center looks like the best 4. Then let Colledge, Coston and Whittaker fight it out. Klemm is toast.

The Kicking situation still looks very tenuous. I was big on the Jon Ryan bandwagon and hope he pans out.

I'm very anxious to see what the QB gurus Mike McCarthy and Tom Clements can do with Favre, Rodgers, and Ingle.

Also, what Jagodzinski and Joe Philbin do for the OL and the running game.

Can Bob Sanders maintain the momentum Jim Bates gave the Packer defense? I'm a little dubious about the unknown here. Kurt Schottenheimer scares the hell out of me.

We could be a lot better. You've got to hope that a handful of players manage to take their games to another level this year. We had lots of holes.

As of now, we have a total of 90 players. This includes the UDFA DE and NFLE players.

Of those 90, a total of 36 were acquired via the draft. Let's see how many make the 53 man roster and how many we have on the P-Squad.

I'll be interested to see how our depth charts start taking shape!

Our starting lineup:

Green Bay
QB Brett Favre
RB Ahman Green
FB William Henderson
WR Donald Driver
WR Rod Gardner, Robert Ferguson, or Greg Jennings
TE Bubba Franks
LT Chad Clifton
LG Daryn Colledge
C Scott Wells
RG Junius Coston, Kevin Barry, or Jason Spitz
RT Mark Tauscher

LE Aaron Kampman
UT Colin Cole, Corey Williams, and/or Cullen Jenkins
NT Ryan Pickett
RE Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila
WLB A.J. Hawk
MLB Nick Barnett
SLB Ben Taylor
LCB Al Harris
RCB Charles Woodson
SS Marquand Manuel
FS Nick Collins
PK Billy Cundiff or Dave Rayner
P Jon Ryan or B.J. Sander
LS Rob Davis
PR Greg Jennings, Cory Rodgers, Will Blackmon
KR Najeh Davenport, Cory Rodgers

What needs to happen: The RBs need to stay healthy, one of the prospects needs to emerge as a legit starter at RG, Mike Montgomery needs to emerge as a run down DE to spell KGB, Charles Woodson needs to stay healthy. We don't really have a viable #2 receiver unless Gardner rebounds to the level he was at early in his career or Jennings emerges quickly (and that's a long shot for a rookie wideout). Our kicking game could be atrocious, but we'll have to wait and see. This team isn't a championship contender, but it's probably a little more talented than some people think. If everything goes well and Chicago doesn't accend to championship level, they could compete for the division title. You could say that about every team in the division though.

Don't forget Marc Boerigter. If he stays healthy and has a year like he had w/ KC in 2004 he will be a #2 or #3 guy.

Both 53 man rosters showed David Martin making it. That would surprise me - he's been a tease for a couple of years, and I think has been replaced by Lee. I wouldn't be surprised to see Cross or Humphreys, or another TE brought in to be the 3rd TE. I just get the feeling they're tired of him.

You also both had R Thomas getting cut - he saw a lot of the field last year! I guess the idea is for Ben Taylor to replace him.

Is it a given that Blackmon will be a DB? Any chance of him lining up at WR?

Jeremy Thornburg LB
Tracy White LB
Tim McGill DT
Ruvell Martin WR
Willie Quinnie WR
Leo Bookman WR <- a rookie. UFA?

A few guys are 2nd year players. I assume they were on practice squads last year, and we signed them as FA's.

7 guys on the PS, IIRC. Usually a QB and a couple of WR to run the scout team. A DB and an RB in case of injury.

That leaves two spots to rotate guys through for auditions.

I think Moll has a spot reserved for him on the practice squad. Last year you could have said the same thing about Chris White, but they kept him on the 53 man roster.

Moll and Tollefson would qualify as practice squad in my book.

Defense looks good, QB looks good, RB looks good, TE looks good, OT looks good. Question Marks are still Guard, Center, and receiver. I'm less concerned about receiver than interior line. It was good to see O-line addresses in the draft, now we got to hope that between last years cast, and this years cast of rookies, we can mold together something respectable. In my mind, the 2006 win/loss ratio depends on this key issue. We need to develope our starters early this year to establish a cohesive working unit. Last years debacle of switching guys throughout was a joke.

RashanGary
05-01-2006, 12:52 PM
I agree with Tarlam....This is the first year that you have about 10 or 15 guys that you really want but might have to cut.

The depth is better than it's been in quite a few years.

After the season I was on a pretty big low as far as the hopes for the team but maybe it's the addtion of Hawk, Colledge, Woodson, Jennings, Hodge ect....but I've gone from no way we beat 7-9 to no way are we worse than 7-9. If I had to toss out a best guess right now I would say 9-7. The coaching is a HUGE question mark right now. Other than that it looks good.

I LOVE HOW INSPIRED AND COMITTED THE TEAM IS......They said the workout room looks like the regular season...WOW.

SC,

If you look around the league at the number of rookies who start after round 2 or 3 it is far less than one might imagine..

Only a few rookes start each year and most of them are first or second round picks.

I think Hawk, Colledge, Hodge and Jennings will contribute right away. All of the other guys af good things about them and all appear to be better football players than the likes of Chatman, Thurman, Little, Horton, Klemm, Washington ect.....

If we get 3 rookie starters that is impressive. If we get 2 or 3 more to develop and Hawk is a pro bowler then that draft is a solid A. I really don't think you can expect every draft pick to start year 1. That is lofty expectations even for 2nd and 3rd rounders.

Tarlam!
05-01-2006, 01:08 PM
SC, I think the answer is, yes, I think we will get 53 guys playing well this year and competing for starting positions.

Do I think we have a rip-snorting WR core? No. We are one huge play-maker away from that. So are 25 other teams, cause there are only a handful.

Do I think we'll have a garanteed 1st down RB Core? Yes. I think if Green's career is prolonged by sharing time with Gado, and Da Poop is used like Fisher last coupla years, we have a great RB crew.

I hope we use twin TE sets, because that's always tough to defend and I hope I never see Barry line up as a TE again in my life!

Those are 3 areas where we can look to next year's draft, plus a bone crunching DE is still missing.

But, I like this team. A lot.

Regarding KGB:

WTMJ's Bill Michaels's (Big Unit) had his credibility take another beating when he became the "you heard it hear first" voice that said that Green Bay had all but made the trade for Reggie Bush.

Nonetheless, he had his eyes on KGB this week and said that he can't believe how big and muscular he has gotten. Apparently moving out the damn Nautilus machines and putting in the old fashioned free weights (gotta love a strength coach named Rock Gulliikson) has agreed with KGB's strength conditioning and physique.

Imagine KGB being stouter against the run on top of all the other defensive upgrades.

Roman versus Underwood should be interesting come camp. There is absolutely no upside to Roman. I would think that all Underwood has to do is improve slightly and he gets the spot. Good call on Whitless - I can't see him fitting this scheme as a guard and Barry has to be retained to back up the tackle spot, even though he likely won't see playing time at guard.

mraynrand

P.S. The Carolina game last year showed that Klemm is a natural tackle. It's logical to keep him to back up Clifton. He had to switch positions during the Carolina game and was solid.

Wouldn't be surprised if Rayner won the PK job from Cundiff though.
I pretty much agree with everything you have here. I think the last couple of spots to be decided will be a battle between Lucas and Rodgers for WR and Culver and Underwood at safety. Who knows though, Roman might get cut and both could make the 53 man roster.

While it's true there's a lack of competition at the running back spots, what I like about TT is that he brings in players and invites competition. Look at the battles that are shaping up at the WR, defensive line, linebacker and defensive backfield positions. It'll be good for the team. And no, I don't think the guys TT drafted are just cannon fodder. A couple, maybe, but I see stiff competition in lots of positions.

This is much preferred to Shermy, who seemed to like to bring in only the guys he thought he needed. There never seemed to be enough competition for roster spots.

I like what TT has done. I also look forward to seeing how Underwood, Coston, Hawkins and Montgomery look this year. Poppinga, too, if he isn't put on the PUP. My guess is that Montgomery and Coston will really step up this year.

Noah Herron, apparently, is the competition.

Let's take another look at Whisper Goodman

Regarding KGB:

WTMJ's Bill Michaels's (Big Unit) had his credibility take another beating when he became the "you heard it hear first" voice that said that Green Bay had all but made the trade for Reggie Bush.

Nonetheless, he had his eyes on KGB this week and said that he can't believe how big and muscular he has gotten. Apparently moving out the damn Nautilus machines and putting in the old fashioned free weights (gotta love a strength coach named Rock Gulliikson) has agreed with KGB's strength conditioning and physique.

Imagine KGB being stouter against the run on top of all the other defensive upgrades.

did kgb gain any weight? if not, he's still too small to hold up against the run. and, if he doesn't develop some moves other than speed rushing the outside he needs to go back to situational rusher. he's not an every down player, never has been....
