The Green Bay Packers have signed rookie defensive tackle Justin Harrell, the team's first-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the signing Friday.

Harrell, a 6-foot-4, 310-pound player from Tennessee, was a four-year letterman and defensive captain in 2006. He became the last Tennessee player to wear Reggie White's No. 92.

In 35 career games, including 25 starts, Harrell tallied 82 tackles, four sacks and two interceptions. He earned second-team All-Southeastern Conference honors in 2005 before injuries limited his senior season to three games.

Harrell is the final of 11 draft picks to sign with the Packers. All rookies will take the field Saturday when the team opens training camp at 2 p.m.

Packers sign first-round pick Harrell

Green Bay - The Green Bay Packers have reached an agreement on a five-year deal with first-round draft choice Justin Harrell, an NFL source said Friday evening.

Packers vice president of finance Andrew Brandt and agent Eugene Parker wrapped up negotiations early Friday evening and Harrell was expected to sign the agreement before the start of the first training camp practice Saturday.

Harrell's signing means the Packers will have all of their draft choices signed and in camp for the first practice Saturday at 2 p.m.

Financial terms of Harrell's deal were not available.

Harrell has yet to take part in anything but individual drills during mini-camps and organized team activities because the club wants to make sure his surgically repaired left biceps tendon is at full strength. Harrell suffered a rupture of the tendon in Tennessee's second game, played one more game and then was lost for the season due to surgery.

Until the doctors get a look at Harrell, Packers coach Mike McCarthy said he couldn't say for sure whether he would be completely cleared for contact in training camp. All along, the idea was to hold Harrell back during the off-season so he would be ready for the first day of camp, so there's a good chance he'll be cleared.

Earlier in the day, McCarthy said that Harrell would be listed No. 1 on the depth chart ahead of Corey Williams because the club was so encouraged by his potential. However, he said Harrell was listed No. 1 in the base defense and the Williams would be No. 1 in the "sub" or specialty defenses.

McCarthy said what we all sort of assumed, that there are three starting DT's.

How many DT's even play close to 100% of the snaps? I'm just going to guess here and say none.

If Williams comes in and has a similar season to a year ago I would be suprised and irrate if Thompson decided to let him go just because we have two good DT's. That position, you can have three good ones and you'll still need a fourth for the injuries that are bound to happen to 310 lb fat men who go all out on their knees and ankles.

Let's not get caught up in word games. Harrell is signed and Andrew Brandt deserves a couple weeks of vacation. Once again fitting a shit load of rookies under the rookie cap. Nice work!

Agents, Red tape, NFL league office approval of the contract, Medical Clearance, etc.

When dealing with some of these people a lot of details have to be done before it is done.

However, let me announce that The Offseason is over.

The season hasn't started but the offseason is over!!

Now we can see what he is made of as the hitting now begins. I want to see this guy become a beast in the middle of the DL.
