View Full Version : Packers to cut KGB?

With the team having determined roles for 2007, some observers expected the Packers would try to reduce Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila's $5 million base salary. With the richest three years on his seven-year, $37.3 million deal ready to kick in, it figured the club wouldn't stomach paying that money for a backup end. "But I didn't think so," said Gbaja-Biamila, and he never heard from the Packers. "I'm a guy, whatever I commit to or sign for, that's what I'm going to do. I don't decide how the employer decides to use me. Whatever the role, I'm going to do my very best." Gbaja-Biamila's present cap charge of $6.6 million, third on the team behind Brett Favre and Nick Barnett, will swell to $7.7 million in 2008 and $8.9 million in '09. If a cut is inevitable, he isn't worried. "You know something? When that time comes I'll deal with it," he said. "Today has enough issues of its own." Reggie McKenzie, the Packers' director of pro personnel, acknowledged that the Packers probably erred playing Gbaja-Biamila so much over the years.

KGB on being a starter:
Deep down inside, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila still thinks he should be the starter. No matter how many friends, coaches and teammates tell him that being a designated pass rusher is his calling, Gbaja-Biamila still yearns for more. "KGB" can't help himself. Back when he was coming of age as a defensive end for the Green Bay Packers, he put becoming a starter as the ultimate individual goal. "If I said I didn't want to be a starter, I wouldn't have anything to shoot for," Gbaja-Biamila said Monday. "Here's my mentality. My goal with these new coaches is to cause so much havoc that they'll say, 'Let's just keep him in there.' "But if I'm never a starter again I'm OK with that, too." These days, Gbaja-Biamila's starting job is held by Cullen Jenkins.-- Journal Sentinel

Doesn't make much sense to me to cut him. True, he is overpaid, but we certainly have plenty of cap room to pay him and keep him as a situational pass rusher.

It makes NO sense to cut him. He is a dangerous pass rusher who likely will be more of a threat if fresh.

Since we aren't up against the cap, I see no reason to even think about cutting him...even if overpaid. That may change after this season though...as his cap number continues to rise.

Is he overpaid in todays market??? I don't think he is or if he is, not by much at all.

Not this season with all the CAP space we have.

unless . . .

TT decides to make a move to try to save our offense.

Moving mountains, maybe, but TT making that move is closer to turning water into wine!!

I agree in today's market he's fairly priced. We need to keep him cause you never know if Kampy or Jenkins gets hurt.

BEFORE Jenkins busted out was when KGB should have been cut. Now I actually like him on the team for passing downs. The big contract we all hated is also a good deal now like everyone said. He is gonna have to restructure eventually to stay though.

Tis, true that the deal he signed isn't that out of whack given what other teams are paying DE's, but...

He only plays one down.

He only has one move & everybody knows it's comin'.

If one of the kids show anything at RDE, he could be gone.

Camp ain't goin' too good for KGB:

This from the GBPG

"Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila showed little effectiveness in one-on-one pass rushing drills against left tackle Chad Clifton. Gbaja-Biamila jumped offsides twice before getting stuffed when he tried to beat Clifton with an inside move. The only players Gbaja-Biamila could beat were first-year tackle Orrin Thompson and rookie free agent Pat Murray, who hasn't been able to block anyone."

What about tradin' KGB to the Giants if Strahan retires?

Get one of them #2 picks TT loves so much.

Why would we cut KGB this year ? We're sitting on 15,000,000. Even if the whole team is overpaid we don't need to clear up any space. And he can help the team this year so if you want to win this year you keep KGB and hope he excels as a pass rusher

KGB was excellent as a specialist according to the article. I watch his interviews and I feel he is a real Packer.

If KGB does what he is asked to do and he is paid within scope, why would anyone call for his head?

I like him. I hope we keep him around.

He fits that cliche of being a Packer person

It would be great for Green Bay if he can stay fresh and get double digit sacks this year

Not a chance, it wouldn't even make sense. Situational pass rushers are valuable in this league. Does everybody forget what we gave up for R-Kal Truluck? (He's like 8% of the player KGB is too.)

Nope. KGB and Kampmann are the only proven pass rushers in the DLine. He's taking the change like a pro and he doesn't seem like the "locker room cancer" type of guy. I think the switch will prolong his career and make him just as effective as if he were full-time starter.

Let's say GB cuts him...what do you think he'd get on the FA market? Would it be much different from what he's making now? He can still rush the QB and is a high character guy, so he has some value. OTOH, let's say TT wanted to bolster the pass rush with a DE...who would he get and what would he have to pay?

They might try to restructure future contract years, but I'd be shocked if they cut him. (This year, anyway)

As with a lot of issues this season, whether or not KGB is effective is completely wait and see imo.

He is a speed rusher. Clifton knows him well and probably cheats him outside 'cause he ain't going inside. Over the years I think most tackles have figured him out, and when one hasn't he gets his sacks in bunches.

If he has lost any of that speed he has lost everything he brings to this game and he probably will be cut.

As the Defensive line gets deeper he will need more than his great attitude to keep a job in Green Bay, especially considering the price.

With a good camp he stays, with a poor camp he's right down to 50/50.
