LB A.J. Hawk

Frank Coyle: Hawk is probably the most developed prospect in this draft. That means he starts from Day One on a unit that needs talent and leadership.

Scouting Report

Pros: Refined in every area of the game into a complete defender -- instincts, athleticism, big-play ability, intangibles and top production. A durable player who will play through minor bumps and bruises without complaint and will do what it takes to always answer the bell. Has excellent instincts and is an extremely consistent player and outstanding competitor. Reads plays well and flows quickly to the ball. Is hard to fool with any type of influence play and readily reacts properly to draws and screens, showing the ability to get through traffic and beat blockers. A powerful tackler who explodes to the ball, usually with sound technique to finish the play. He uses his hands well to shed blockers with the speed to pursue sideline to sideline. In pass coverage, he is a fine athlete with the fluid hips that allow to him to turn and change directions easily to match up in man coverage and make plays on the ball.

Cons: Continues to improve as a pass rusher and shows the savvy to blitz off the edge on the delay, or the snap, with good angles to the passer. He improved at gaining an edge in 2005 and avoided getting picked off en route to the passer. He is capable of playing the strong side, but would be challenged more physically there at just 6-foot-1 and 240 pounds.

Numbers: As a senior he made 121 tackles with 16.5 tackles for loss, 9.5 sacks, 1 interception, 3 passes defended, 1 fumble recovery, 2 forced fumbles and 1 blocked kick. At the Combine, he ran a fine 4.65 with a 40-inch vertical jump and 9-foot, 7-inch broad jump. His 20-yard shuttle and 3-cone drills were outstanding. He did 24 reps in lifting.

OT/OG Darryn Colledge

Frank Coyle: Packers get a fine blocker with athleticism, toughness and all the components that are important to having a long NFL career. He started more than 50 games, and he can play tackle or guard. He should be a rookie starter on the inside.

Scouting Report

Pros: Nimble senior tackle bulked up from 235 pounds as a freshman. He is an intense athlete with good movement and the size and intangibles to be an early pro starter. In pass protection, he shows very good hand use and fine footwork with the wingspan to push rushers wide of the pocket. As a drive blocker, he gets into defenders quickly with the ability to move them off the line consistently. Over his career he increased his strength significantly with several school records. He has an aggressive attitude that will flash nastiness. Has the ability to retain his blocks and finish strong. He moves well in traffic and displays the ability to block on the second level. He maintains sound positioning consistently, getting good use of his frame, long arms and good functional strength.

Cons: He needs some work on his technique to keep his pads down and get full use of his big, strong frame. He needs to prove he can better handle the bull rush against top defenders. His level of competition is a concern after having a huge physical advantage in the WAC.

Numbers: At the Combine, he ran the 40-yard dash in 5.04 seconds and did 21 reps of the 225-pound bench press. He had a 32.5" vertical jump and a 9’2âà ¢â€šÂ¬Ã‚ broad jump. His three-cone drill was among the best.

WR Greg Jennings

Frank Coyle: Packers traded veteran receiver Javon Walker to the Broncos, and wideout Terrence Murphy retired because of an injury. Jennings is well developed and should win the slot receiver job on a unit with little depth.

Scouting Report

Pros: Jennings is a fast, polished senior who showed big play ability and the talent to get open despite double coverage. He is a shorter, compact athlete who has fine speed and quickness. He has excellent hands, and has shown an ability to run after the catch. He has fine open-field running skills with the quick moves to make tacklers miss and the sudden acceleration to run away from defensive backs. He is especially effective in the short and intermediate zones where his quickness allows him to get open and his running skills allows him to take a short pass for a big play.

Cons: He must prove he can go over the middle regularly against NFL-caliber safeties.

Numbers: As a senior he caught 98 passes for 1,259 yards (12.8 yard average) and 14 touchdowns. As a junior he caught 74 passes for 1,092 yards with 11 touchdowns. At the Combine, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds with 36½â€Â vertical jump and a 9’9âà ¢â€šÂ¬Ã‚ broad jump. Performed well in agility drills.

LB Adbul Hodge

Rivals.com: Hodge is a physical player who doesn't shy away from contact. Was selected at about the right spot. He'll likely contribute on special teams immediately.

Scouting Report

Pros: A hard-working, competitive, emotional player who should become a solid starter at the next level despite his lack of ideal size. He is extremely strong for his size with a 440-lb. bench press. He has nice agility to slip and avoid blocks with excellent functional strength to square up and take on blockers as well. He is good working through trash with adequate change of direction skills and hand use to stay alive against cut blocks. As a tackler, he is technically sound and will wrap up with the ability to finish well.

Cons: He is a big hitter that can really lay the lumber to the ball carrier though he could do a better job of tackling in the open field. He is not a very sudden player and does not always take ideal angles, relying on his speed to compensate. In pass coverage, he shows some stiffness in his hips to move laterally.

Numbers: As a senior, he made 158 tackles with 98 solo stops, 11 tackles for loss, a sack and three forced fumbles. At the Combine, he ran a 4.79 with a 31-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot broad jump.

OG/OC Jason Spitz

Rivals.com: The kind of player Packers fans love - strong and smart. He makes the most of what athletic ability he has. Might have been selected a bit early.

Scouting Report

Pros: He is a real battler on the inside and knows how to grab, hold and punch well with his hands. He has good balance with a solid base and has the leg drive to clear holes for the running game. He has an ornery demeanor and will muscle, maul and bury defenders whenever possible. As a drive blocker, he uses sound technique and gets a nice push at the point of attack. He uses his good functional strength well to control a defender the full play.

Cons: He does not do well when sliding laterally or operating in an open area. His ability to pull is marginal at best. In pass protection, he sometimes gets too tall and overextends, which causes trouble with double moves and rushers who operate on his edge. He is not quick afoot and isn’t agile, which limits him in space.

Numbers: His weight room numbers are: 475-pound bench press and 675-pound squat. Did 25 reps of 225 at the Combine. Ran a 5.46 in the 40 with a 28.5-inch vertical jump and 8’6âà ¢â€šÂ¬Ã‚ broad jump.

CB Will Blackmon

Rivals.com: Has the athletic ability of some of the earlier DBs taken, but is not as polished. It would not have been a surpise if he would have been picked on the first day.

Scouting Report

Pros: Blackmon played both cornerback and receiver in addition to returning kicks. He combines good size and speed with fine instincts and playmaking ability. He has quick reactions in coverage with the fluid hips to break easily on the ball and make plays. He is able to turn and run with receivers in coverage. He is not shy about tackling and gives a good effort with a nose for the ball, though he is not a naturally physical player. He also shows the toughness to play fairly well in run support with the ability to get off blockers. He is a good return man that sees the field well and is able to create with the ball in his hands. His versatility should enhance his ranking in some situations. He would appeal to a coach like Bill Belichick who welcomes versatile guys. He is a high-character player that puts in the work to excel.

Cons: He became a victim of his own talent and unselfishness. As a senior, he played mainly at receiver, where he displayed some playmaking ability. The move helped his team, but hurt his pro potential. He is better in man than zone coverage and will need some time in a base defense after not playing on the corner.

Numbers: At the Combine, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.46 seconds with a 41” vertical jump and 11’1⠢‚¬Â broad jump with fine agility drills.

QB Ingle Martin

Rivals.com: Former Florida starter transferred to Furman. Has the skills to earn him a starting NFL grade in time. Excellent developmental QB with nice upside. Could eventually develop into an NFL starter.

Scouting Report

Pros: An accurate thrower with the touch to deliver all the passes, and showed improvement in the deep game during his final season. He has above-average arm strength to make most throws and is especially effective on the short and intermediate routes, leading the receivers to make plays after the catch. He delivers the ball with good velocity, timing and touch with the ability to hang in the pocket and make the tough throw. He is a competitive, hard-working and tough player who shows the ability to direct an offense.

Cons: He has outstanding upside as a passer, but has a learning curve that will take time. A versatile athlete who is still raw as a passer and needs work on his mechanics, footwork, decision-making and defense recognition. Tough prospect with the athleticism to back up two positions and possibly start as a punter.

Numbers: At the Combine, he ran a fine 4.65 with a 36-inch vertical jump and 9-foot, 3-inch broad jump. As a senior, he completed 212 of 349 pass attempts for 61 percent, a school-record 2,959 yards and 20 TDs, while leading Furman to an 11-3 record and Division I-AA playoffs semifinal appearance. He accounted for another school record 3,191 yards in total offense.

DT Johnny Jolly

Rivals.com: As a senior, he started 11 games and totaled 64 tackles with eight tackles for loss and three sacks. He plays with low pads, which allows him to get good use of his fine functional strength to hold the point of attack.

Scouting Report

Pros: He plays with low pads, which allows him to get good use of his fine functional strength to hold the point of attack. He has agility, balance, can change directions, gives good effort and has been a productive defender over his long career at a high level of competition. He has fine natural, functional, football strength and is able to make good use of it on the field.

Cons: He usually needs to win early in the down and needs technique development to take his game up a level from that standpoint.

Numbers: As a senior, he started 11 games and totaled 64 tackles with eight tackles for loss and three sacks. At the Combine, he ran a 5.43 40-yard dash, did not lift and recorded 8-foot-8 broad jump.

S Tyrone Culver

Rivals.com: He is an agile, experienced defender with make it grade and the athletic ability to surprise in the right scheme. He can be a quality special teams performer and has enough tools and potential to get some notice on latter part of Day 2.

Scouting Report

Pros: Culver is a playmaker who is instinctive and shows the athleticism of a cornerback in coverage. He is a good free safety prospect with sure tackling skills and intangibles to develop quickly as a pro. His fine instincts and coverage skills may warrant a late round selection. He has good explosion. He is reliable in the deep patrol and is seldom ever beaten. He is aggressive as a tackler and has fine intangibles. He has fine consistency and is fairly physical and tough.

Cons: He was mainly a zone free safety, but he has the athletic frame and skills that are more like a cornerback. He is not the most instinctive deep defender. His feet are good and quick, though he lacks the flex in his hips to turn easily and can lose a step coming out of his breaks. He has a tendency to play it safe and doesn’t make as many plays on the ball as you would want for a free safety. He needs to show more consistent awareness and improve his ball skills.

Numbers: Did not attend the NFL Combine. At the Fresno State pro day, he was timed at 4.63 and 4.60 seconds in the 40-yard dash. He had a 39” vertical jump and a 10’9⠢‚¬Â broad jump, a 4.35 short shuttle, and a 7.25 three-cone drill. He did 23 reps in the 225-pound bench press.

LB Chad Greenway

Frank Coyle: Greenway is a terrific addition at a troubled area on the Vikings' defense. He is excellent value here, and is a defender with the talent to start immediately and at a few positions. He was rated a top-13 prospect.

Scouting Report

Pros: Has rare speed for a linebacker and fine instincts, gives total effort at all times and has exceptional coverage ability. Has the hip flip and movement skills of many safeties after previous experience at that position. A downhill player who is able to makes plays all over the field and does a good job of playing off blockers and getting through traffic. He understands his responsibilities in the defensive scheme and carries them out perfectly, like another coach on the field. He stays in his lanes and does well at turning the play back inside or stringing it out to the sidelines without giving ground. A mature and intelligent person with outstanding work habits and fine character who is an avid film watcher in the mold of a Zach Thomas. He has an excellent burst of speed and quickness when attacking forward, displaying upside as a pass rusher in the right scheme though not always utilized to the fullest in that role in college. A natural and fluid athlete who moves very well, both forward and in reverse. He competes as well as anyone in this draft and is as well prepared to start as a rookie.

Cons: He needs to get stronger to be more consistently quick getting off blocks, but is a sure tackler with top instincts. His performance on the bench at the Combine (16 reps) was significantly below par for this class. Also needs to add lower-body strength. Must improve man-to-man pass coverage ability to be complete player.

Numbers: As a senior in 2005, he posted 156 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 8 passes defended, 1 QB hurry and 1 pick. At the Combine, he weighed in at 242 pounds and did 16 reps. He ran a 4.78 and had a 33.5-inch vertical jump and a 9-foot, 9-inch broad jump.

CB/S Cedric Griffin

Frank Coyle: Vikings needed help in the secondary after losing two veterans in free agency. Griffin is a big corner with some experience at safety. He should play in nickel and dime defenses early in his career. This was a surprise pick with corners Ashton Youboty and Richard Marshall on the board.

Scouting Report

Pros: Griffin split time between strong safety and cornerback. He was moved to corner permanently as a sophomore. His versatility to play safety will help his grade, but he will get his first look on the corner where his size, toughness, experience and athletic ability give him a chance to play early. He shows playmaking ability in run support where he led the secondary in tackles as a junior. He is able to effectively jam receivers at the line. His fine size, speed and toughness also project him to the safety spot as well. As a corner, he would fit well with teams that use cover-2 schemes like New England, Tampa or Indianapolis.

Cons: He does not have top-end track speed and his recovery speed is only adequate with some real questions about man situations against fast receivers. He has a good backpedal, but will lose a step in transition. He is not sudden in his speed, but relies on building up speed. He needs to show better cover skills against NFL-caliber talent to earn playing time.

Numbers: At the Combine, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.52 seconds with a 35.5” vertical jump and 10’5⠢‚¬Â broad jump. He did 17 reps in the 225-pound bench press.

HarveyWallbangers

OC/OT Ryan Cook

Frank Coyle: Vikings need offensive lineman and reached here for a prospect with size and versatility. He figures to push for playing time at center or guard, but was not considered a top-100 prospect. He does have size, experience, smarts and enough athletic ability to start in time.

Scouting Report

Pros: His ability to handle defensive tackles in single assignments impressed NFL scouts. He has the athletic ability and versatility to play any inside position. He is one of the biggest centers to come along in many a year, and has a huge wingspan that projects him to tackle by many scouts.

Cons: He is cut high for the pivot and fails to play with consistent leverage - making him vulnerable against powerful, shorter defensive tackles. He has problems with playing too tall and not bending his knees. Defenders often get position on him get under his pads. He has limited speed to get to the second level. Lack of body control limits him as a blocker in space. He does not show a lot of power in his punch and is more of a grab and hold type blocker with his hands.

Numbers: At the Combine he ran a 5.45 and did 28 reps. Posted a 26.5-inch vertical jump and an 8’1âà ¢â€šÂ¬Ã‚ broad jump.

HarveyWallbangers
05-01-2006, 10:46 AM
QB Tarvaris Jackson

Frank Coyle: Vikings had to have a future passer after trading Daunte Culpepper to the Dolphins. Jackson is a talented, underdeveloped prospect who needs a lot of work. He is the biggest reach of the first day so far. He will sit and learn and has interesting upside, but could have been selected much later.

Scouting Report

Pros: Has a live arm with excellent mobility to give his offense a versatile threat. Has adequate size with fine footwork and the arm strength NFL scouts seek in a prospect. He moves well in the pocket and can be dangerous on the perimeter where his speed and running skills give his offense a real weapon to pressure a defense.

Cons: As a passer, he is still considered a developmental prospect after playing in a basic offense. He needs work on most areas of play, especially his passing where his accuracy can be erratic.

Numbers: At the Combine, he ran a 4.69 with a 31.5-inch vertical jump and an 8-foot, 11-inch broad jump. As a senior, he started 11 games and attempted 320 passes with 195 completions for a 61 percent rate and 2941 yards. He had 29 TDs and five picks while running 103 times for 482 yards and three TDs.

DE Ray Edwards

Rivals.com: Needs time to develop, but with refinement can be one of the steals of this draft. Has tremendous athletic ability. He has good pass rushing skills and can also drop back into coverage.

Scouting Report

Pros: He is a big, mobile athlete with natural pass-rushing skills to be one of the hidden gems in a deep draft class. He is able to drop off into pass coverage, showing an awareness of the short zones and routes by backs and tight ends. He could end up being one of the biggest steals of this draft for the patient team that waits for him to develop, which may take a couple of seasons.

Cons: He needs to add counter moves inside and increase strength work. He has shown the ability to play the run, but needs to use his huge frame better at the point-of-attack and locate the ball quicker. His ability to read the play sooner is an area of concern that probably keeps him on the bench early in his career.

Numbers: As a junior, he started 11 games and made 28 tackles with 11 tackles for loss, 5.5 sacks and an interception. At the Combine, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.82 seconds with a 39-inch vertical jump, 9-foot-6 broad jump and did 30 reps in the 225-pound bench press.

S/LB Greg Blue

Rivals.com: He has good special teams skills to win a gunner role. He is a marginal NFL starter with experience and production at the position, but marginal speed and quickness in pass coverage. A good second day pick.

Scouting Report

Pros: Blue was a dominant in-the-box defender and has imposing size for a safety and the frame to carry additional weight that could also project him to outside linebacker. He is a tough defender who shows strong hitting skills with the technique and sure tackling to make plays at the line of scrimmage. He has good instincts and athleticism to get to the ball. He could be a fine pro defender in the proper scheme. He carries an early NFL starting grade at the strong safety position. He has the fine range needed to cover the field to each sideline. He is very sudden and fills the hole like a linebacker. He can cover ground and outrun some mistakes.

Cons: In a fairly draft deep safety class, he could get overlooked, though that would be a mistake. In pass coverage, he gets turned around too often and loses sight of the ball. He shows questionable change of direction and ball skills that leaves him vulnerable in man situations. His ability to plant and drive is suspect and he bites on pump fakes and is very vulnerable to the double move. He displays questionable recovery speed.

Numbers: At the Combine, he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.62 seconds with a 37.5” vertical jump and 10’ broad jump. He did 16 reps of the 225-pound bench press.

I was thinking the same thing about Martin. If that Kanak punter is not much better than Martin, my assumtion is, Martin will punt, hold and be the 3rd stringer. Or, it would allow us to carry a 4th QB and have 2 guys backing Brett and A-Rod.

Now that's what I call a value pick!
