A backup punter a.k.a. "camp leg." Brian Doherty, or something like that?

Is it good enough to release the sig???

Looking for confirmation in "print"...

That would be outstanding news; I'm sick of this dam thing. Hmmm; seeing I only have one ounce of credibility as it is, I might askt he forum for views on this. Once upon a Time, in a Fairyland called Grailworld,
I actually thought TT would sign two legitimate free agents.

I considered Frank Walker to be one legit free agent.....a stretch.

Could a punter be a 2nd legit free agent ?

Packers Sign Free Agent P Ryan Dougherty; Place Humphrey On I.R.

http://www.packers.com/news/releases/2007/08/03/2/

posted 08/03/2007

The Green Bay Packers have signed punter Ryan Dougherty, a non-drafted rookie free agent out of East Carolina. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the signing Friday.

Dougherty was a three-time All-Conference USA selection, with a career average of 42.7 yards per punt. The four-year standout had 68 punts inside the 20, playing in 47 career games.

The Orlando, Fla., product also served as the team's kickoff specialist his junior and senior seasons, accounting for 47 touchbacks. Dougherty was a three-time watch list candidate for the Ray Guy Award, presented to the nation's best college punter.

The 6-foot-1, 233-pound player will wear No. 8.

In a related roster move, tight end Tory Humphrey was placed on injured reserve (ankle).

I totally whiffed on the name ...

I dunno, B. Probably not a camp leg. I'd say Joe Werner is a more legit FA than a camp leg. But it doesn't matter. If you're sick of the sig, then call it good enough. It's your call.

NO NO NO! The key word here is legitimate. I'm one helluva sweet guy so I'll give you the Walker signing counting as one. However, I draw the line when it comes to no name punters!!!!!!!!!!!

With all the kick teams practice a team needs 2 of each in camp to keep one guy from wearing out his leg. Every year.

But ever since I was a kid and saw Chester Marcol in pregame warm up punting 60-65 yards(that would be 45-50 if 15 yards behind line of scrimage)
I always thought a team could go with just one kicking specialist(like Craig Hentrich).

Ryan is the second most secure of a roster spot.

We signed every single football player that'd play for $8.50 an hour, and they didn't count as legit free agents. This guys chances of making this football team is less than mine, so I vote no... Sorry. :P

But I'm with Idle. I vote yes on Werner. RG, at this point you probably could stick at tight end, so I think he qualifies.

Well, Harvey said I was a contrarian, so I guess I have to be wrong. The Vikings game was the BEST game the Packers played last year. The statistics prove it.

You can't count Werner when he does'nt even know the damn play!

Stuff that might not make the print edition ...

-- We're still in a fight-free camp, but defensive end Cullen Jenkins got physical with Brandon Jackson during the final special-category period, shoving the rookie running back after a play.

-- Speaking of Jenkins, he sent rookie tight end Joe Werner airborne when Werner tried to block him on a Noah Herron run during team drills.

-- Werner, the former UW-La Crosse basketball star who hasn't played football since high school, provided my favorite scene of camp so far. He emerged from a huddle with the first-team offense and wasn't sure where to go. He turned and looked at quarterback Brett Favre, who made two jabbing motions with his hand, giving Werner a sandlot-style route. Surprise, surprise, Favre didn't throw him the ball.
-- Shaun Bodiford and Ryan Powdrell continue to line up as the top kick return pairing. The rest of the first unit today consisted of: Jarrett Bush, Jason Hunter, Tracy White, Brady Poppinga, Robert Ferguson, Michael Montgomery, Johnny Jolly, Allen Barbre and Korey Hall.

-- The first- and second-team offenses had false starts in the final period. Barbre, the fourth-round pick, was removed from the drill after the second.

-- Practice ended after almost exactly two-and-a-half hours, at 4:29 p.m.

-- Passing stats, better than normal on a day with a lot of throws to running backs (7-on-7 in parentheses): Brett Favre 18-for-26 (9-for-11); Aaron Rodgers 14-for-15 (9-for-9); Ingle Martin 3-for-6 (1-for-3); Paul Thompson 1-for-1 (1-for-1).

I'd say any free agent that makes the roster or the practice squad can be retroactively viewed as "legitimate." So you can also consider cheering for Antonio Malone, Tim Goodwell, C.J. Blomvall, or Carl-Johan Bjork to make the squad.

C'mon, B, changing that sig to update the day tracker without 2 FAs has gotta be a pain in the ass. Imagine just logging onto PR and not having to change the sig.

Do it, B. Get rid of the sig. It's time.

Packers staff happy with converted linebacker Hall's instincts, progress
By BOB McGINN

Green Bay - Rookie Korey Hall, the Boise State linebacker converted to fullback by the Green Bay Packers, is dispelling the notion that he'd be a long way off from being able to contribute on offense this season.

If anything, the first week of training camp has shown that Hall isn't the project he was expected to be, given that he hadn't played in the backfield since his high school days in Glenns Ferry, Idaho.

Incumbent Brandon Miree remains the front-runner to replace the departed William Henderson, but there isn't much doubt that Hall is ahead of Ryan Powdrell, a rookie free agent from Southern California who received a $15,000 signing bonus in May.

Another undrafted rookie, Corey White of Alabama-Birmingham, has played more running back than fullback in camp and also remains in contention.

The main reason Hall was drafted in the sixth round was his proven ability on special teams. The Packers compared Hall to other pro fullbacks who were collegiate linebackers and made the move.

Hall started all 52 games at Boise State, made 394 tackles and intercepted 11 passes, an extraordinary number for a linebacker. Hall, according to offensive coordinator Joe Philbin, has been far ahead of the curve on assignments almost since the day he arrived.

"If a guy has good football instincts, he can make transitions easier," Philbin said. "If a guy doesn't have that natural understanding of the game, boy, it's hard on either side of the ball. Korey is a bright guy. He knows what he's doing."

The Packers have not wavered on Hall, never once playing him on defense.

"Now I'm starting to grasp the playbook," Hall said Friday. "I'm starting to get the hang of it."

Perhaps the biggest question that Hall will have to answer in exhibition games is whether he's physical enough to block. Standing just a shade over 6 feet tall, Hall might be close to fully developed.

"He's very muscular and powerful," strength coach Rock Gullickson said. "He's just not structurally a big man. Structurally, he's a little bit limited. Of course, you'd like that guy to be 245 to 250. But he doesn't have that structure."

Hall weighed 240 pounds in the spring, 235 when he reported and is 232 now.

"I've been trying to get my weight back up," he said. "I feel I can be a good player at 240. I wouldn't be a lot over 240."

Powdrell, who was converted from linebacker to fullback in the spring of 2006, is off to a slow start. He reported too heavy at 258 and his blocking was rusty, understandable considering he suffered a broken ankle in Week 2 last year.

"I don't know about overweight, but he's not in the best shape," Philbin said. "We want him to be a little bit more nimble."

Nickel battle

Incumbent Patrick Dendy has worked as the No. 3 cornerback in the first week, but Jarrett Bush is challenging.

"Bush had an exceptional off-season and is off to an excellent start," coach Mike McCarthy said. "You're seeing his play come up a lot. He's a tough kid. Always liked him.

"Dendy is stronger this year and playing with more confidence. Frank Walker is in the hunt. Tramon Williams is a guy who just keeps getting better. That group will be very competitive."

Unmentioned by McCarthy was Will Blackmon, the fourth-round draft choice in 2006. He has been beat for a series of long completions and touchdown passes in the first week.

Quarterback roulette

Since the return of Favre on Thursday, the playing time for his backups has decreased significantly. Aaron Rodgers still gets some turns in team drills, with Ingle Martin getting one or two and Paul Thompson, a free-agent rookie from Oklahoma, getting none.

McCarthy and his staff made subtle changes in Thompson's footwork and ball carriage.

"Paul is definitely a prospect as far as the ability part of it," McCarthy said. "He's picked up the scheme very well."

Muscle men

Gullickson listed several players when asked who were the team's strongest, pound-for-pound.

"The guys that turn your head are the linebackers: (Brady) Poppinga, (Nick) Barnett, (A.J.) Hawk," he said. "All the safeties are very strong for their body weight. Scott Wells from the offensive line. (Robert) Ferguson and (Donald) Driver as receivers."

On the way back

Defensive tackle Ryan Pickett, who had to sit out four practices because he failed a conditioning run, still isn't in good shape, according to the coaches.

"Guys like Ryan, I don't know if there's an answer," Gullickson said. "You wish he was here more in the off-season but you just don't know his family situation. We just don't know what's going through his mind.

"When he's here he really does fine. He's a good guy. Very good. He's got a very positive outlook and will work hard. Just a work in progress."

The thing I don't get is the comments about Hall's weight. This scheme isn't looking for a big bruiser. Miree is 236. Justin Griffith is 232. I think if Hall stays in the mid to high 230s, that should be enough.

The fella that I hoped TT would take a careful look at is Canadian RB Jesse Lumsden , last season in the Seahawk's TC.

This fella, the son of CFL Hamilton Tigercats great Neil Lumsden, has a lot of game.

He (Jesse) set the Canadian College career record for total yards rushing. He's strong, very quick, solid moves with good feet.

He now leads the CFL in rushing after going for 212 yards and 2 TD's on 12 carries last night, celebrating his 25th B'day.

My guts tell me he would be a solid Packer. :)

He's a fine young man as well.

Sorry Bretsky, as much as I would like to see Thompson sign a real player, Walker is about it right now. I am not sure, but I always thought that kickers didnt count towards a roster spot. So unless this guy also doubles as a TE or RB, as far as I can tell, you are stuck with that signature for another year or two. :P

Fritz
08-04-2007, 09:24 AM
Nope, Bretsky. You'd lose all credibility if you considered a camp-leg signing as a "legitimate" free agent. TT just hasn't come through, man. Not on your FA wish.

Bretsky

The mob has spoken; another few months for this sig, maybe another full year

When I made it I had intended not keep it there until TT made a free agent signing of somebody with NFL experience who was sure to make the team.

Walker might even be a stretch, but I count that one.

This thing might stay on all dam season. I never fathomed it
