View Full Version : Packers Versus Jaguars - Official Preseason Game Thread

Well, last week we had a dominating preseason performance. Tonight, we're squaring up against the NFL's #2 defense from last season, returning all its starters.
One starter for the Jaguars will not be suiting up tonight and that is right guard Chris Naeole.
This week will be a HUGE test for the Packers because the Jags like to play physical football. They like to run the ball right up the middle, and win the battles in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
The Packers are beginning to adopt a similiar style of play and tonight will be an excellent test for our young offensive line and our deep defensive lines.
Can we stop the running game of Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew, the best 1-2 punch in the NFL? Can we continue to get pressure off the edge and force turnovers? Will our offensive line be able to hold up against the best tandem of tackles in the NFL? We will be able to move the ball in the red zone?
Tonight will be very telling of how the Packers rebuilding plan is going. If we win both battles in the trenches, then this team will be pretty competitive during the regular season. If we lose them both, it looks like it could be another long year without the playoffs.

FIVE THINGS TO WATCH
Mirror image: The Jaguars play the kind of football the Packers hope to play this season: good, physical defense complemented by a strong running game. Jacksonville ranked second in the league in defense last year and will punch the Packers in the mouth if they don't come ready to rumble. This will be the best test for the Packers' run defense thus far even though Naeole won't be in the lineup and it's questionable how many carries starting running back Fred Taylor will receive. Jacksonville ran for a franchise-record 2,541 yards last year.
First things first: The Jaguars intend to play most of their starters through the first three quarters of the game, but the Packers won't match them. Because of injuries at running back, fullback and offensive line, coach Mike McCarthy wants to limit the exposure of the starters and risk losing any more depth at those positions. What's more, he wants to put players who are on the fence - such as ends Larry Birdine and Jason Hunter, safety Charlie Peprah, linebacker Desmond Bishop and defensive tackle Daniel Muir - a chance to play against the Jaguars' No. 1 units.
Crunch time: So far, neither Dave Rayner nor Mason Crosby has flinched. Both have hit 2 of 2 attempts in exhibition games and roughly the same percentage in practice. Kickoffs could be a determining factor. So far, their distance has been almost equal (Rayner is averaging 70 yards per kick and Crosby is averaging 69.8). But Rayner has two touchbacks to Crosby's one and returns off his kickoffs have averaged 21.2 yards to Crosby's 28.0. The battle continues.
Block and tackle: Rookie Korey Hall has the team made, the only question is whether he'll start at fullback. Veteran Brandon Miree suffered a setback due to a neck stinger and will be playing for the first time. Either Miree is going to have to play lights out or Hall is going to have to fall flat on his face for there to be a change in the depth chart. Hall's play on special teams continues to be a plus in his favor and he's definitely the fullback of the future.
Feet first: Rookie free agent running back Corey White is being given an opportunity to show he belongs, but he's clearly on the fence and needs a big game to solidify his spot. White has the second most carries behind Brandon Jackson with 21, but is averaging just 2.2 yards per attempt. Jackson, Morency and Hall are guaranteed roster spots. White could serve as a swing man at halfback and fullback. If he plays well, then the Packers could keep him and either one or two more halfbacks to go with the other three.

The Jaguars plan to have their starters play 3 quarters.
The Packers will play their starters for a half.
Betting line has Packers getting 3 points(3 point underdog). Over and under is 37. I'd bet the under.
1) Corey Williams should be have a good night going against lesser talent.
2) Pickett will have more opportunity also.
3) Rodgers will feel a lot of pressure in the third quarter. If he doesn't screw up the Packers could win.
The Packers will have the halftime lead. A couple of third quarter drives will be nice. Ingle has to not turn the ball over late.
Bottom line: Much of the games outcome depends on Aaron Rodgers making plays and not screwing it up. Post game threads will be about his play good or bad.

It's going to be hard to judge--since McCarthy is going to sit a lot of his starters and Jacksonville plans to play their starters through 3 quarters.

I don't even know if they'll play that long. Where did you read that? I had read that many of them won't even play 2 quarters, and it sounds like they'll even put borderline guys in with the first team to see how they do against the Jags #1s.

I predict they keep the playmakers in a quarter and then the rest of the starters in a half at least. I guess we'll know in 4.5 hours.

Sorry, it was an AP(Associated Press) story. All I've seen is that McCarthy will not be playing starters in the second half.
Why can't the gme start an hour later?
5:00 in the afternoon is a bit crazy and hurts the national audience.

Now you know how it feels to be on the east coast........in reverse!
Try watching MNF game when it gets over at 12:30, and there's still Tues. morning to deal with.
Or even worse, trying to watch a Sox game that starts at 10pm, when they play on the west coast.

When MNF started at 6pm and was done by 9:15 it was great.
Now ESPN has 35% fewer viewers than on ABC.
Sundays games start at 10 and 1. Sunday night games get over at a good time.
Usually the West Coast has the best times for football. Tonight if a person gets home from work at 6 the game is already in the 2nd quarter.
ESPN by bumping MNF up has lost many casual fans who won't join a game in progress. Kornhoser could be part of of why rating are down also.

Not sure I agree with this approach. I'd play all starters for one full half. Then again, I usually don;t agree with teams (and almost all do) that only play their starts for a series of two in the 4th game.
That's just my opinion. I'd prefer to get guys in synch leading into the season. Yes, injuries are the danger.

1st series there were some nice plays and some not so nice plays.
Jones made two nice catches for first downs. I loved the route on the second completion for a first down, he ran a quick out and then pivoted back towards the center of the field located the first down marker and then fought for it.
The oline is going to be tested by the Jag's tough and athletic defensive line, especially in the running game, Spitz, Colledge, and Wells all got shoved into the backfield on consecutive running plays.

RIPackerFan
08-23-2007, 07:46 PM
Good protection - I think Favre is winging it just to show everyone he can still throw it downfield.
O-line has to open some holes. While Jackson is not breaking a lot of tackles, he is making the proper cut - its just that there is no hole. This is different than last week, we there wasn't someone waiting in the hole for him.
Great to see a 3rd and 1 and 4 and 1 and have the D stop them both times.

The O needs to run more stretches and take it outside. I don't care if you've got Mike Wahle, Frankie Bag-O-Donuts and Marco Rivera at their prime you cannot run inside against STroud and Henderson.
Sounds kinda weak to take a Page outta Barry A's playbook, but it would work much better than keeping taking it up the gut against these guys.

The Jags are a tough team - in the AFC - we are holding our own.
While not as positive as last week - I think we are playing a better team.
I also didn't expect to be as positive as last week.

1st and goal 3 pass plays :( I hate that.
well when your running back has 7 yards on 6 attempts, im fine passing it
I suppose yah all our short-yardage backs are injured as well
we have short yardage backs? :?:
Backs? Backs ??. . .you mean running backs?
None of those in Green Bay. :)

The good news - We're holding our own with 1sts and 2nds in against a surefire playoff team this year.
The bad news - We're not running well.
Edit: Jackson is finding the hole, no matter how little it is. That bodes well for his future, our line needs to start ripping open bigger holes.
You aren't going to run inside against Stroud and Henderson. Nobody in the league is. It's like running against Pat and Kevin Williams. Not going to happen. Henderson requires like a triple team with his size. He's like 6'8". Scary!
Run outside?
That's what I suggested earlier. They should run some stretches because they have good blocking tight ends. They would be able to get some yards that way.

Very nice play by Bush....looks like neither QB can hit the long ball (not talking about this play)

Kampman is consistently getting pressure. Leftwich keeps stepping up, though. Here's hoping Kampy doesn't develop KGB syndrome.
