Are we forgetting that there is a game today? :D

Hopefully Favre and the starting offense plays the first quarter and gains some extra experience with each other today because last week there was a lot of mistakes. Hopefully Favre can get on the same page with Jennings and Jones and gain some more confidence in them. I also would like to see Holiday and Martin step up today just in case Driver can’t play the opener. I don’t think Jackson is playing today, but this will be a good chance for us to see what we have in our back up running backs. I would love for Wynn to step up and make an impact because I love his size and think he could be a nice change of pace back.

Also, Rodgers has another chance to show that he is worthy of becoming the future starting QB in GB. Rodgers has had three good games and hopefully he can continue that today as well. Go Pack Go.
8-)

Oh thank God!! Yes, a little touch and rhythm would be welcome especially if we can move the ball on the ground a little bit early--even with Jackson out. When does Morency get back?

Come on, boys!!!

5 things to watch in tonight's game

1. The Packers have only one unsettled starting job, at safety opposite Nick Collins, and Atari Bigby can wrap up that with a sound performance tonight. He started last week against Jacksonville and remained in the role in practice this week, so it's his to lose. The Packers are sitting his competition, veteran Marquand Manuel, presumably so Manuel won't get hurt in case they want to cut him if they're satisfied with Bigby. That will give backups Charlie Peprah and Tyrone Culver extensive playing time to show they can fill in during the regular season if injuries occur.

2. First-round draft pick Justin Harrell has had a quiet training camp at defensive tackle. He's a big man who's been a strong anchor in the middle, but he hasn't made many plays. The Packers gave him more snaps in training camp than any other defensive tackle to help get him into football shape. He missed most of his senior year in college with a torn biceps tendon. But they also thought they wore him down and hurt his performance in camp. They backed off on his workload this week, so he should be as fresh and sharp as he's been in training camp. If the regular season started tonight, he probably wouldn't suit up for the 45-man roster. He'll get extensive playing time tonight to show whether he's ready to move up the depth chart.

3. With rookie Brandon Jackson (concussion) and Vernand Morency (knee) in shaky health for the start of the season, the Packers are desperate to find a running back with more running talent than the dependable Noah Herron, who is the No. 3 back. The best shot for that on their roster is seventh-round pick DeShawn Wynn, a career underachiever and injury-prone player at Florida. Wynn missed the first three preseason games because of a quadriceps injury, so this is his last stand. Coach Mike McCarthy will give him as many carries as he can handle to see if he's worth a spot on the roster.

4. The camp-long kicking battle is coming down to the last week. The best guess is sixth-round draft pick Mason Crosby has a slight edge over Dave Rayner, but tonight will factor in. McCarthy said he might even concede a third-down play if he's in long field-goal range to give Rayner or Crosby a shot at a tough kick in a game setting. Crosby had a 52-yarder against Pittsburgh, so Rayner presumably will get the next shot at a long attempt. Both clearly are NFL-caliber kickers and auditioning for other teams, as well. The Packers are looking to trade one before final cuts Saturday.

5. More than anything, the Packers' goal for this game is to come out without any injuries of note. The starters will play a couple of series at most, so that's when the most critical damage could occur, though several key backups will play extensively.

I think this game goes like last year's preseason finale against Tennessee. We play our starters for 2 series, and Fisher plays them into the 3rd quarter. Thus, we'll look progressively worse as the game goes on. You can mark this one as a loss. I wish I had some money to bet. I want to see some of the backups and bubble guys show something against Tennessee's starters. Mainly, I'll be watching these guys: Aaron Rodgers, James Jones, DeShawn Wynn, Justin Harrell, Johnny Jolly, Rory Johnson, Jarrett Bush, Frank Walker, Charlie Peprah, Aaron Rouse

Hasn't Rouse been ruled out for this game? I don't think he's been upgraded that I've seen.
Big game for Peprah tonight. Also Walker/Dendy battle will be decided.
Birdine/Hunter too. A lot to watch for in this one actually. Careers are on the line.

I am curious to see how many snaps JJ and KH get in this game. I would think they will play on the first and second teams essentially just to get them more reps before Philly.

I have a hunch those guys, Bigby, Colledge and Juice get some extra work.

I'll be interested to see if Clowney shows something. Reports have said he has been coming on lately in practice. If he makes some plays, he has a chance to steal the last WR spot from Holiday. Clowney adds a dimension of blazing speed that the other WR's don't. Holiday, in my opinion, doesn't really do anything that Jones and Martin don't do just as well.

DeShawn Wynn is my hope to be the knight who rides in and saves the Packer running game. I look forward to his performance. Unless he sucks, in which case I'll pretend I never wanted him to or thought he could succeed.

I also hope that Bigby doesn't fall apart and that "James" Mason Crosby nails the kicking job down. Or that one of the two does; I'm not sure I care who it is.

Harlan, I'd love to buy the blue dog a drink sometime. I might be in Madison to visit my daughter (she's a Badger now) in November. What are the odds?

Things I'll be watching for:

1. Wynn, can he actually run the rock?
2. Is there a #3 TE on this team or will we have to go get one?
3. Harrell, will we hear his name mentioned?
4. Clowney, can he earn a spot on the roster?
5. Which kicker will blink first?
6. How many ints will Thompson throw?
7. Is there a 6th LB worth keeping?

ok watching the game right now, herron just scored.

1. Our hurry up offense looked effortless driving down the field on the last posession.

2. Wynn is stinking it up already, a dropped pass that might have went for a td before herron's, as well as some weak running.

3. Defense was flying around the ball and forced a quick 3 and out.

4. Jennings is looking great, only 2 catches but broke tackles on both of them. Jones is looking well too, as is Franks.

I really think they are gong to carry four running backs, whether it is Wynn or White at this point is up in the air.

Although White came in as a fullback he has had limited plays at that position so it will be tough to cut a pure fullback in Miree to keep White who is unproven at the position.

This is what I thought too. I'm suprised how sharp the passing game has been. Jones, Jennings and Franks all played well, Driver said he'll be ready, the oline is doing a good job in pass pro.

The #1 ST's have looked really good

I watched both the Vikings and Packers tonight, and this is why preseason is meaningless. Vikes win 23-14, and it was a bunch of 2nd/3rd stringers and soon to be cut players against a bunch of 2nd/3rd stringers and soon to be cut players. The one guy, Tarvaris Jackson, that should have played a lot for them (all preaseaso, in fact) got taken out early. Dallas took their starters out about the same time the Packers took their starters out. Completely meaningless.

I will say that it's nice to know that Green Bay outscored their opponents 27-3 when it was 1st stringers vs. 1st stringers this preseason and not too many serious injuries, so a good preseason all in all.

Did anybody notice that friggin' Zac Alcorn, Adam Stenavich, Travis Leffew were in the game with 5 minutes in the FIRST quarter? Guys that likely won't make the team. It's good though. They have some tape on some guys now. Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers came out of the game before Vince Young and the Titans starters did. Kerry Collins vs. Paul Thompson isn't a fair fight either.

Coach Jeff Fisher used this game as his dress rehearsal for the Titans' season opener at Jacksonville, playing most of his starters into the third quarter.

The Packers scratched 15 players, including receiver Donald Driver (foot) and both starting cornerbacks, Al Harris and Charles Woodson. What remained of the first-team defense left after one series, a three-and-out.

This is all that needs to be said about this game--although it was interesting to see some of the borderline guys fighting it out.

1st team offense out after 2 series. 1st team defense out after 1 or 2 series. Titans starters play until midway through the 3rd period.

That isn't my approach necessarily. It is with guys like Favre and Driver. Guys like T-Jack, Aaron Rodgers, Atari Bigby, James Jones should play more. I've said that all preseason--that T-Jack should play as much as he can. Hell, I would have loved to seen ARod play the rest of the game after Favre. Long list: An indication of the different way the teams’ coaches approached this game, Tennessee’s Jeff Fisher held out only three players, whereas the Packers’ Mike McCarthy withheld 16.

Among the Packers’ scratches were six starters: Jackson (concussion), Driver (sprained foot), guard Jason Spitz (calf), and cornerbacks Charles Woodson and Al Harris, who aren’t injured but didn’t play so the Packers could get a longer look at their backup cornerbacks. Also, middle linebacker Nick Barnett was scheduled to start and went through warmups but didn’t play by McCarthy’s decision. Barnett has no injury.

In their places, the Packers started Noah Herron at halfback, James Jones at receiver, Junius Coston at right guard, Will Blackmon at left cornerback, Jarrett Bush at right cornerback and Desmond Bishop at middle linebacker.

McCarthy mainly wanted to get out of this game with his starters healthy and get a long look at backups contending for roster spots. His other lineup scratches Thursday were: receiver Shaun Bodiford (knee), running back Vernand Morency (strained patella), safety Aaron Rouse (hamstring), linebacker Abdul Hodge (patellar tendinitis), linebacker Spencer Havner (strained back), guard Tony Palmer (hamstring), tackle Tony Moll (neck stinger), defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (knee) and defensive end Michael Montgomery (knee).

Fisher, on the other hand, treated this game as a dress rehearsal for the regular-season opener – most teams use their third exhibition game for that. Among Tennessee’s three scratches was one starter, cornerback Nick Harper. Receiver David Givens and defensive tackle Rien Long also didn’t play.

I actually think the Titans are a good matchup in week 4 for our approach. Seriously, if you can get over the fact you are going to lose, it's a great training tool. Fisher seems to want to get some confidence for his team (he can do that with us playing our backups)--while McCarthy gets a game where he can really judge what he has in his backups and borderline guys. Maybe putting Travis Leffew and Adam Stenavich in when it was still the 1st quarter is a little much, but otherwise no problema.

Birdine made the play, but I think you are underseling Harrell on that play a bit. He drove the OL at least 5 yards back, so he got great push up the middle and put himself in position to make that play. It will be interesting to see how he looks when he's 100%. I know I read one of the writers say that it takes a year to regain full strength after having that injury, so I suspect he'll look better as the year goes on. Hopefully. He seems like he'll be at least a stout plugger in the middle when he's healthy. Not sure about his pass rush abilities. Really hard to judge the guy right now.

Both Jones and Jennings made a couple of plays on the first two series. It's obvious that Jennings is playing Driver's spot in the offense when Driver is out--because he got more looks in two series than he has in the first three games with Driver in there.

Partial,

I know you didnt ask me, but I'll butt in any way. Here are some things that stood out in the game.

Justin Harrell looked better. Got some nice push and did a REALLY nice job on that TD he scored. Harv is right, Harrell pushed the O linemen back and collapsed the pocket. This was by far his best game.

Peprah may have pushed Manuel out the door. Culver looks like he'll be out for awhile, if not out the door, then on IR. Peprah has a REAL nice pass break-up when he was one on one against a TE. He also had some nice tackles, not too many miss tackles, if any. Manuel is probably gone.

Bishop was not overly impressive tonight. That being said, he still looks like he belongs. Rookie mistakes. I still like him.

Blackmon broke up a TD pass, REAL, REAL nice play. His cast is pretty big, reminded me of Andre Thurman's from a year or two ago. Blackmon did not field a punt or kick.

Bush gave up a couple of completions but nothing major.

The Packers STILL can't run the ball. Wynn flashed at times but looked winded towards the end. He did have 22 carries (or so) and will probably end up on the practice squad.

The Packers cant go into the season without aquiring a true #3 TE. The Alcorn experiment should be over and Harris should be on the PS.

Another RB should be brought it. In my mind, it is a no brainer.

Miree is probably gone. He did not play well and got very few snaps. Hall and White, two rooks, will probably be your FBs. They may try and put White on the PS and sign a different FB after cuts.

It is going to be hard to hide Muir and Birdline on the PS. The Packers should probably put Montgomery on PUP or IR and keep Birdline. Muir may stick if they trade Cole or Williams. The next 48 hours will be very interesting.

Crosby did miss a 52 yarder, but he had plenty of leg. It traveled at least 60 if not more. I still think the rookie gets the job.

The Titans played their 1s vs. our 2s and 3s virtually in entire 3 quarters. Remember, it was 14-14 after the first play of the second half. Not bad. Giving up that punt return really made the score look bad for us, but it really wasnt that impressive of a showing by the Titans.

Brett looked great. What else is new?

Any other ?s

Here's what I remember:

1) Favre looked sharp. Jennings, Jones, and Bubba all made plays.
2) The run blocking wasn't good. Pass protection when the starters were in was solid. Not so good with the backups. Really, it's impossible to judge though. Kyle Vanden Bosch, Albert Haynesworth, etc. SHOULD dominate guys like Travis Leffew and Adam Stenavich.
3) Ryan had some great punts, but had 2 bad ones.
4) Crosby missed a 52-yard FG.
5) Clowney started off horribly. Rebounded a bit, but I think he lost a spot.
6) Bigby showed good speed on a good lick. I hope this guy can cover--because he looks good in support and on blitzes.
7) Blackmon gave up one and got one.
8) I thought Frank Walker outplayed Patrick Dendy, and Charlie Peprah outplayed Tyrone Culver.
9) Our backup LBs are weak.
10) Daniel Muir flashed again.
11) As far as Wynn, I thought he got zero blocking early, but had some nice runs when he did get blocking. Actually, I thought he looked better than in the scrimmage or practice (can't remember which I watched of him). He has rock hands though. He's a big guy that has some nifty feet. He's worth keeping around--at least on the PS.
12) Paul Thompson lost any shot he had of making the roster.
13) I thought Birdine and Hunter both made some plays, but Birdine lacks stamina.
14) I watched Harrell on a few plays. While he didn't dominate, he held the point and got some push on some of the plays.
15) I thought Bishop really struggled. He looks too much like Abdul Hodge to me.

So when will this "top ten" defense learn to tackle.

The failure to tackle will cause some players to miss out on a chance to be a benchwarmer.

Thanks gents. May the wind always be at your backs.

I don't think anyone on the "top ten" starting D missed any tackles. I know it was only preseason but our D looked real good.

Some scrubs missed some tackles but every team goes through that.

Harv,

They barely showed it but dont you think Vanden Bosch hit on Brett after the TD pass was WAAAAAYYYY late. In my opinion, it was a cheap hit. Unless, he was blocked into him but I didnt think so. The replay showed Brett threw the ball and was hit WELL after. What the hell! Where was the flag?

I missed it, but that's what superfan told me. He said that Brett got hit while Herron was going into the endzone.

It was bullshit. As big as that SOB is, I was ready to rip his head off when I saw Brett limping off the field. It was cheap.

isnt kyle van den bosch the same guy who hit carsom palmer low and tore up his knee in the playoff loss to pitt?

Hmmm. I think that was Steelers nose tackle Kimo von Oelhoffen. But I can see how you could confuse the two.

Honestly, Burdine sp? had the impressive penetration and knocked the ball away; it was kind of a fluke that Harrell was there and he was athletic enough to catch the ball and run it for 15yds or so into the end zone

Wasn't the play a pass play ? If he was rushing the passer I would not consider that driving the blocker back. Based on TT's comments and the medical staff checking him out throughly pre-draft, I don't think the expectation was for him to showly develop during the season.

No that was Von Oelhoffen from Pittsburg.

Kind of interesting that the teams we played in the preseason went 11-2 in their other preseason games.

Well, for the most part our 3rd strings were pretty much blown out. I don't think anyone could really argue with the success with our first team, though. If we stay healthy its looking like we could be ok. But then again I am fairly skeptical that Clifton and Tauscher will be able to make it through an entire season, same with Harris and Woodson.

They look like they all should be cut.

White is a very good special teams player. You need a backup LB that, I think. I don't mind Bishop backing the middle so much (although I feel the same way about him as I did Hodge last year), but we have no viable backups for the outside--unless the coaches see something in Rory Johnson. Spencer Havner may make it--just because of his versatility.
