"WE'RE GOING TO KICK YOUR ASS ALL OVER THE FIELD."

That was Dick Butkus' response when he was asked, during a coin toss of a game, which goal the Bears wanted to defend. To him, it didn't matter. That was how the game was played in the NFL's "Black and Blue" division, a division made up of tough Midwestern teams-the Chicago Bears, the Detroit Lions, the Green Bay Packers and the Minnesota Vikings-who played a bruising brand of football that thrived long before performance-enhancing drugs, stadium domes and contracts worth millions of dollars.

To commemorate the division's 40th anniversary, veteran sportswriter Bob Berghaus rounds up the players, coaches, and sportswriters and provides a look back at the gritty, glory days these rivals waged in BLACK AND BLUE: A SMASH-MOUTH HISTORY OF THE NFL'S ROUGHEST DIVISION ($24, August, 2007, Clerisy Press).

BLACK AND BLUE captures the feel and ferocity of the game with accounts of 50 of the muddiest, bloodiest Black and Blue Division games and stunning black-and-white photos. Fans will find original interviews from many of the great names, including Mike Ditka, Jerry Kramer and Bud Grant along with team histories dating from the division's inception in 1967 through the Bears appearance in the most recent Super Bowl. Berghaus selects his own 40-man All-Time Black and Blue Team, as well as game capsules and stats and pens a unique chapter spotlighting the position for which the division is best known-linebacker, from Butkus to Nitschke, Lucci and Winston through Singletary and Spielman to Urlacher.

Bob Berghaus' career as a sportswriter was inspired by a childhood love of Vince Lombardi's Green Bay Packers. He has covered football for the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, was the sports editor at the Green Bay Press-Gazette and is now sports editor for the Asheville Citizen-Times. With BLACK AND BLUE, he brings us the essential book on this renowned and notorious NFL division. His skill as a journalist, combined with his appreciation as a fan bring an honest, passionate, and admiring tone to each brutal hit, growling stare, and epic match-up he describes.
