1 Colts 1 -Say what you want about New England and Dallas, but the defending champs continue to impress week after week. With a 38-20 comeback victory over the Broncos on Sunday, the Colts won their 11th straight home game. Indy has not lost a game in September since 2004, is working on all cylinders on offense and continues to get enough of an effort out of the defense to remain undefeated four weeks into the season. The defending champions lost a slew of key contributors from last year's squad over the off-season. A month into the 2007 campaign, though, they look as good, if not better, than they did in '06. They'll be tested in the coming weeks, though. Marvin Harrison, Rob Morris, Bob Sanders and Joseph Addai all left Sunday's game with injuries. Upstart Tampa Bay — Tony Dungy's former team — is up ahead on Sunday.
2 Patriots 2 No Laurence Maroney? No problem. The Patriots got a career day from backup running back and off-season acquisition Sammy Morris in New England’s 34-13 win over Cincinnati. The former Dolphin ran the ball 21 times for 117 yards and scored a touchdown in the victory. Tom Brady continued to cruise, Randy Moss caught 10 balls and the defense held Chad Johnson to just three catches and 53 yards. New England is rolling. Circle November 4th on your calendars: Patriots vs. Colts. It’s the game of the year.
3 Cowboys 4 The NFC's top rated offense continued to flourish Sunday against St. Louis. The defense played pretty darn well too. The Cowboys outgained the Rams 502-187 yards in what was Dallas's fourth convincing win of the young season. Tony Romo used his arm and his legs to put up yet another dream fantasy stat line, while the defense held Marc Bulger under 200 yards. His replacement — Gus Frerotte — fared no better. Wade Phillips has the Cowboys at 4-0; the team's best start since 1995. Dallas travels to Buffalo for a Monday night matchup.
4 Packers 5 What more can you say about what Brett Favre's doing out in Green Bay? Moving beyond the all-time wins record, the all-time touchdown record, and whatever other individual records he's going to shatter this season, Favre's got the Packers at 4-0 and on top of the NFC North. Sunday's performance against the Vikings was the Favre of old ... again. The ol' gunslinger threw for 344 yards and two touchdowns. Most impressive, though, were the zero interceptions. The Pack have the struggling Bears coming to town this weekend in what should be one of the more intriguing games of Week 5.
11 Lions 22 The high-flying Lions offense looked asleep for the greater part of three quarters of action on Sunday against the defending conference champion Bears. Then the unit woke up just in time. And boy, did it ever wake up. The Lions put up a league-record 34 fourth-quarter points and shocked Chicago with a 37-27 comeback win. Detroit is now 3-1 for the first time since 2004, and has already matched last year's win total. Jon Kitna predicted the Lions would win 10 games back in March, and the talking heads and pundits had a field day. A month into the season, they're already 30 percent of the way there. Who's laughing now?
23 Bears 16 The New York Mets weren't the only ones collapsing down the stretch on Sunday afternoon. Chicago gave up a league-record 34 fourth-quarter points to the Lions, squandered a commanding 13-3 lead and fell to 1-3 on the season. Brian Griese started in place of Rex Grossman and threw three interceptions in the loss, while Cedric Benson failed to break the 100-yard mark for the third time this season. But it wasn't the offense that had people scratching their heads afterward. It was that D — 34 points in one quarter? They'll need to get better in a hurry. A trip to Green Bay for a showdown with the 4-0 NFC North-leading Packers is up ahead. Falling to 1-4 could be too big of a hole to dig out of.
28 Vikings 25 Kelly Holcomb hit Sidney Rice for a touchdown pass with 1:55 left in the fourth quarter to pull the Vikings within seven points of the Packers. Alas, a Holcomb interception a few plays later sealed the game for Green Bay. The interception was not without controversy, though, as the Vikings and their fans screamed endlessly for a pass interference penalty to be called on Charles Woodson. After the game, Holcomb told reporters, "They can't blatantly hold you." Minnesota is now 1-3, but riding a three-game losing streak.
