Minicamp Report - Camp 1, Day 2
Defensive tackle Donnell Washington, who has yet to appear in a game since being drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the third round in 2004, is being withheld from practice during the current minicamp because he's out of shape. "He was not ready to go in this camp and it was disappointing and he needs to get it corrected," said coach Mike McCarthy. Washington spent the 2004 season on injured reserve after injuring his arch in training camp. Last year, he was unimpressive in training camp, but made the roster and was inactive for 15 of the 16 games. He dressed against Atlanta, but didn't play. McCarthy said Washington had not participated in the off-season lifting program in Green Bay.

Although they were punting in ideal conditions in the Don Hutson Center, B.J. Sander and Jon Ryan seemed to shank more punts than a team could afford in game situations during the Saturday morning and afternoon practices. Nevertheless, McCarthy said he wouldn't label them inconsistent at this point. Sander and Ryan punted in the opposite direction of where the media was allowed to stand so it was impossible to accurately gauge their averages. But Sander, in particular, seemed to struggle the more he punted in the morning session. After two days, it appears that Ryan, who punted in the Canadian Football League, has the leg strength to challenge Sander for the job.

Second-year quarterback Aaron Rodgers started slowly Saturday morning. In the first team session, he threw high on two rollouts and neither Bubba Franks nor Marc Boerigter could make the catches, although they both got their hands on the ball. In his first turn in 7-on-7, Rodgers was 1 for 3. He threw high to Donald Driver and overthrew Rod Gardner on a deep ball. His only completion was to running back Arliss Beach on a checkdown. Thereafter, Rodgers was 3 for 3 in his other turn in 7-on-7, including a deep strike to rookie wide receiver Greg Jennings. In the final team session, Rodgers also was 3 for 3 in his two turns, including a deep slant to Gardner on a rollout and a deep pass to Boerigter down the sideline. In the afternoon, Rodgers got off to a slow start again. In the first team session, he threw an interception to rookie defensive end Dave Tollefson and was 1 for 3 in his first 7-on-7 session, including overthrowing rookie wide receiver Cory Rodgers on a deep ball. But Aaron Rodgers was 6 for 7 in his remaining turns in 7-on-7 and the final team session. "I think Aaron is having an excellent minicamp," said McCaryhy. "Statistically, big-play opportunities, controlling the huddle, managing the offense; I think he's had three pretty good practices so far."

Getting a look on punt returns this camp are Charles Woodson, Cory Rodgers, Will Blackmon and Greg Jennings in that order.

Left tackle Aaron Klemm remained sideline with a knee injury suffered Friday. ... Ben Taylor worked with the first unit at outside linebacker after Roy Manning practiced there Friday. ... Cornerback Al Harris missed Saturday afternoon with back spasms. ... Defensive linemen Kenny Peterson is being withheld with an ankle injury. ... Brett Favre didn't participate in team sessions or 7-on-7 in the morning, but took some snaps in the afternoon.

With all due respect to Mr. Woodson, we will all be pleased as punch if he limits his contributions to improving our play at cornerback and to taking a few snaps at receiver in special packages and situations. No sense in banging the old boy up on special teams, though his esprit de corps is admirable.

This punter thing is really getting old! I have never heard of a team that has so much trouble finding a decent punter. At this point I am just hoping for an average punter! Nothing spectacular but someone who doesnt shank it every other time!

McCarthy mentioned this is the biggest physically set of wide receivers he's ever been around. He says he thinks there's a lot of talent here and they'll definitely keep 6.

80 Donald Driver WR 6-0 190 31 8 Alcorn State D7b-99
82 Rod Gardner WR 6-2 215 28 6 Clemson W-05 (Car)
85 Greg Jennings WR 5-11 197 22 R Western Michigan D2b-06
89 Robert Ferguson WR 6-1 210 26 6 Texas A&M D2-01

I hope they have room for 5 CB's because I don't want to lose Blackmon or Hawkins.

Nick,

At the end of last year, the Packers had 6 Cornerbacks and 5 safeties on the roster. I don't think they'll carry that many into this season because they'll probably want to add a linebacker. However, 5 CB's is a real possibility. Probably Woodson, Harris, Carroll, Hawkins and Blackmon.

I'll be somewhat surprised if they keep 6 WRs, unless they keep only 2 TEs.

Well I really only count two effective TEs anyway. David MArtin has been treated like a second year player, who will finally realize his full potential this year......blah.....for like a fucking decade. The guy isn't "the guy". Lee and Franks.

I can punt. In fact, I am an outstanding punter! Growing up with Rugby and Aussie Rules, all Aussie lads start punting really early in life. We learn to play action on punts and fake. We learn to punt bombs and wobblies (hitting the ball so it's bounce is impossible to read).

I can punt.

But, I'm going on 43...

Pretty sure a team always keep 5 CB's and then debates on whether to keep 6 or not.

I AGREE; I was calling for Martin to get cut last year.

In my dictionary

potential unrealized = David Martin and Robert Ferguson

Teams always keep at least 5 corners nowadays. Almost all teams carry 5 wideouts. Some carry 6. For some reason, Sherman decided to carry 4 one year, and it came back to bite us. (I think that was the year he carried 2 punters.) They'll keep a minimum of 5. If Rodgers proves he deserves a roster spot, then they'll possibly carry 6. I believe New England has carried 6 the last few years. You can look at Rodgers as more of a return specialist (like Dwight with New England last year).

Ferguson is gone this year...Thompson is bringing so much young new talent that he is going to need that roster spot for somebody else.

I, too, think the writing could be on the wall for Ferguson this year. There are a lot of things working against him:

1. Driver, Gardner and Jennings will in all likelihood be ahead of him on the depth chart.
2. Rogers very well could be the return man, giving him a spot, too.
3. Cutting Ferguson is not an expensive undertaking. It costs about the same to keep him or cut him, depending on when it is done.
4. There are inexpensive options to replace Ferguson (Boerigter or one of the half-dozen or so others on the roster with a chance).
5. Ferguson has been a disappointment when given an opportunity.
6. Ferguson has an injury history.
7. Ferguson has not really made an impact on special teams for the last two years, and there are young guys who may do as well on ST, are as yet unknown and may provide more upside potential than Ferguson does at this stage of his career.

To my thinking, Ferguson makes the team only if he is clearly the #2 or #3 receiver coming out of camp. I do not think that is likely, unless injuries crop up.

Patler;

I agree. How many "acceptable" veterans got cut last year to make room for younger players with bigger upsides?

Tarlam,

My average punt is about 45 yds. I've never clocked the hang time, but I'm no where near as good as guys from Melbourne. Those guys average 55-60 yards on punts. They can land it on a bullseye, too.

We struggle the most with the punt formation, because we have a different game.

I think the Jets have an Aussie punter...

Yup, there are long lists every year for most teams. I think you can say Diggs, Chatman, and R. Thomas all fall into that category just recently. They are what they are, they will not be more than they are right now, and younger plays who MIGHT develop more can replace them now with minimal drop off.

When you throw in what it would cost to keep Ferguson this year and maybe cut him next year, versus cutting him this year, it seems advantageous to make the call this year. That is why I thiink he will be gone unless he is the clear #2 or #3 receiver. Being #4 won't cut it.

Have you ever punted an American football? Punting a rugby ball is more skin to a kicking soccer ball than it is to an American football, isn't it? I have punted soccer balls and American footballs, but never a rugby ball, so I am serious in my question.

Yes, I have, and I have no problems with them. I prefer them, actually, cause they're heavier. The Aussie Rules balls feel like their filled with helium!

Closet? What closet. Partial (I think it was Partial) posted Patler's Snoopy avatar a week ago or so in a message on here. I asked if I could use it. He said yes. I finally got around to using it today. I thought it would be interesting because people have accused me of being Patler.

Listen, people, TT's got a plan for next year for a punter. He's going to get by with BJ "Shank You" Sander this year, then draft (in the sixth round) next year that kid from Baylor who punts like Ray Guy and tackles like Lawrence Taylor.
