Jets sign Clowney from Packers' practice squad

This just in from Greg Bedard:

WR David Clowney was signed to the active roster of the New York Jets from the Packers practice squad. To take his place, the Packers signed former Oakland Raiders TE James Adkisson.

Clowney was Green Bay's fifth round draft choice out of Virginia Tech.

Didn't take them long to replace him did it?

Damn. If this kid learns to catch he might actually be good.

Clowney has a lot of potential.

He's just SO green.

He may be back on the Jet's practice squad again & we can get him if we want him back.

Another wasted 'valuable' fifth round pick by Mike Sher...er... Ted Thompson.

It's too bad he didn't come in with enough return skills to win the job. Then they wouldn't have had to stash him on their practice squad. Tramon Williams and Will Blackmon are NFL ready corners, more than Clowney was an NFL ready WR, so, TT got more from those guys serving multiple roles (although Blackmon is not returning punts just yet with the cast). Having Clowney be our return specialist would have been enough reason to have him stay on the active roster, but Williams and Blackmon must have been that much better than him, or not appreciably worse.

The difference, of course, between TT and Sherman is that TT can take a chance on a raw player with speed because he has 9 or 10 other draft picks each year. Sherman invested two draft picks in most of the players he drafted, including the long-shots! :D

He was a 5th round pick. In all likelihood he will not even be in the NFL in 4 years.

There will be other short, skinny, fast guys who can't run routes available next year, too! :D

I think I jumped off the Clowney bandwagon after seeing him in a Packers uniform for the first time.

I'm not upset other this either. If he was any good, they would have signed him to the 53 man roster when Holliday went down instead of signing Francis and then Bodiford.

Me too, especially when he circled around and went after passes like an average high school kid.

Initially, I was hopeful they could just send him out occasionally to run deep routes and get open, but from all reports he could not use his speed to get open at all. I was hopeful he would show something as a returner, but that never happened either, although I suppose it still could.

All in all I would have liked for the Packers to have been able to bring him back next year, just to see. Of course, they still might be able to.

I really don't mind this.

"FAVRE....CLOWNEY....TOUCHDOWN!"

Doesn't have the right ring.

Now, "FAVRE...JONES...TOUCHDOWN!'

See, that's better. :)

Who was the fullback that the J-E-T-S JETS-JETS-JETS Stole off of our practicce roster some years back? As I recall, he hung around the league for quite a while.

Goes to show just how bad the Jets are if they feel Clowney is the best option out there.

Clowney is fast...and that's about it. He couldn't run routes well. His hands were subpar. He has no size or strength to speak of.

He was a good option for the practice squad...and if someone else feels he belongs on an active roster, so be it. It really isn't any skin off our nose.

Too bad there was not more foresight on this kid's ball skills. A fifth rounder, like a mind, is a terrible thing to waste!

Very true. I never get too concerned about losing someone from the practice squad. There seem to be two types on practice squads:

1. Flawed players who have some intriguing feature like size, speed, athleticism, etc. who you want to work with, just to see; or
2. A reliable next available option at a position you are thin at because of injuries or the like. It's a way to get players that you might have to activate a little practice and familiarization without counting against the 53.

Clowney was in the 1st category, not the second.

Only rarely is a decent player put there to be hidden. Scott Wells was for just a couple weeks, and that concerned me at the time because they seemed real high on him right up to the final cutdown. They just did not have room for him right away.

Yes, and very few 5th rounders make any impact at all. They hang around a year or two and are gone.

For every Kampman, Gbaja-Biamila, Hillenmeyer and Coston there is one or more Mike Hawkins, James Lee, Ingle Martin, Joey Jamison, Craig Heimberger, Anthony Hicks or De'Mond Parker!

My thoughts exactly. If he couldn't beat out Francis for a spot, there probably wasn't much to be excited about.

You can't hit on all the second day guys. But he did well with Crosby (great pick)/Bishop/Barbre/Wynn/Hall (great 6th rounder who along with Bush has made Hunter,White and Davis look like "just guys" on ST. He missed on Clowney and Harris.

A practice squad signing is on the second page of discussion after just 2+ hours!

It wasn't a waste. I like Thompson's approach...going after guys that have at least one ELITE skill to call their own with late picks (5th-7th). With Clowney, it was speed. Most of the guys still won't pan out...but the ones that do, such as Driver, have a chance to be something special.

Oh, but it was a FIFTH ROUND PICK. These are incredibly valuable! You never know when you'll pick a Dorsey Levens or a Kampman. How could TT WASTE A PICK!!!!!!!!! (note I added extra exclamation points to show how outraged I am).

P.S. The point is that it's just one draft pick. You win some and you lose some. Good thing TT accumulates picks, because typically only 30% or so of draft picks stay with their team long term.

He might turn into something if he can bounce around until he is 25 or 26.

He can't run an NFL route to save his ass.

He also had very little idea how to pace a return. I saw a hilarious play in pre-seaon where he finally got a seam (punt maybe?). He got so excited, he fell on his nose when he excellerated.

He needs to get some NFL strength to boot. He' s a real slender kid.

We had three sixth round picks make the squad this year, and two of them are starters. I think "missing" on a fifth round flyer on a guy with measurables is excusable in light of that.

We've all become TT, treasuring 5th round picks like they were our Precious.

Seemed like a good kid, I hope he gets his chance in NY. He's at least a year or two away from being able to contribute.

I see it as an encouraging sign that other teams are back to picking up players off of our scrap heap.

It might be a sign that we finally have some depth, you know.

Reminds me of when Jacksonville used to have so many ex-Packers it was like Green Bay South. :?

Adkisson might be a good pickup.

My friend who is a student at South Carolina right now is raving about him. I guess he was a wideout and track guy. My buddy said he had a few really big games in college. He just recently made the switch to TE and gained 20 lb since college. He is 6-5.

For the record my friend also raved about Troy Williamson.
