Honda Civic 2002 Oil Life

I am going to change my oil tomorrow but I am lazy and do not like doing it every 5k. I know with some synthetic oils you can expect exceptional protection up to 30k miles (Porsche's recommend going 20k before changing). Does anyone know of an oil that will allow me to stretch my oil changes from once every 6 months or 5k to higher? Maybe 10, 15, 20k?

Any good synthetic should get 5-8 thousand miles in that car IF you drive responsibly.

Yes I can confirm, he drives like a lil bitch. In fact the only car I saw in WI going over 65MPH was some asian dudes that laughed at Nutz and SKin on the highway.

Bummer, I was really hoping I could get that kind of life out of some good synthetic stuff. One of my buddies pays a ton of money, but gets 30k for his Volkswagen. In the end, its actually about the same price and evidently better for the engine.

It all depends....how cold does it get and for how long? How hot? How many miles are on the car now? You can always keep an eye on it and as long as it's not to dirty and you keep it at the full lvl you can push it. Me...I like to do my VW diesel at 5000...my Mini S said always wait for 10000.

Some cars (mostly foreign) are built this way. My wife's Saab is like this. Of course, the oil she does put in costs a ton. However, most cars need to be changed regularly. Regular oil changes are one of the most important preventive measures you can do for your car. Don't skimp on this.

I went with Mobile 1 synthetic oil at 5w-20. Can anybody explain the oil weight system? I know SAE 30 translates to straight-weight 30 but I was never quite sure how the multi-weight oil system works.

I figure with the good mobile1 stuff (its expensive as can be but evidently the best oil for my car) I can get 10k out of it. It would only be about 2-3 dollars extra compare to a decent regular oil, then.

Interesting topic. Since Cleft Crusty just got a new company car (new to me that is - the JS upgraded my 1982 Yugo for a 1984 Dodge Reliant K), I am interested in the oil change theory. In practice though, I never have changed oil, I've just added oil - to the tune of about 2 quarts/week. So I guess I couldn't speak to the question of whether to wait 5,000 miles. If I waited that long, I'd probably have a fused block of iron where an engine used to be.

Mobile 1 - 5W30 here. Nothing but the best for my babies. And I change it every 5000 miles because it's easier to remember to change on the 5's, and I don't like those cheesy looking stickers on my windows.
