How many of you play? Do you have a regular game? What's your favorite Sheepshead lingo?

Can't believe I lived in that state all those years and never learned to play sheepshead.

My college life was divided into two parts. There was the spend a few thousand dollars and get nothing but academic probation so you end up working in the paper mills anyway for two years part. That happened at UWM. Then there was the now that I realize how much fun it is to work in a paper mill I better go back and get straight A's and a degree part.

Second semester at UWM we played Sheepshead and Spades for rent. We kept a running tab and settled up at the end of every month. One of the interesting things about Sheepshead is how the dynamics of the game changes between four-handed and five handed.

Getting burned on a good hand a few times in a row, makes anyone a mauer!! I play sheepshead and euchre. Euchre is much easier too play and it is more fun than playing four handed sheepshead.

Five handed, Jack of Diamonds partner or call an Ace.

Crack, recrack, double bump & blitzers

The Ten Commandments of Sheepshead:

1. Thou shalt lead trump when thou art the picker's partner.
2. Thou shalt lead long into the picker.
3. Thou shalt not send a boy to do a man's job.
4. Thou shalt not risk thy only schmear.
5. Thou shalt not recrack without points to bury.
6. Thou shalt not pick thin in the number-two position.
7. Thou shalt not take forever to decide whether to pick.
8. Thou shalt not table talk.
9. Thou shalt crack whenever possible.
10. Thou shalt not go alone when you could have called me as a partner.

Here is a link to a glossary of Sheepshead terms:

We always make fun of my sister (the mauer) because she used to say that we got "schroeder" when she was little (instead of "schneider").

You Euchre players don't know what you're missing.

In this area you learn to play euchre before you learn your ABC's.

Everyone plays Texas Hold'em now.

Very first time I played I took my two brothers for $60 each.

They caught on to my sweet innocence second time around and it wasn't as pretty.

Has anybody heard of a game called hand and foot? Played with two decks and two hands and you try to place like cards together?

The Ten Commandments of Sheepshead:

3. Thou shalt not send a boy to do a man's job.

Odd wording when you consider that usually means play your Queen - not your Jack.

I've got a crazy uncle that aways says (including in mixed company) - "are you gonna rub the tits off those Queens?" if you take a little too long.

We always play double on the bump, and use leasters to try and keep people honest.

Playing our handed, three times in a month I picked with both red queens, Ace of D and J of Hearts. Got beat every single time, usually only taking one trick or two max. Damn red queens are a bitch. You get yelled at if you mauer, but you have no guaranteed trick playing the red Q's.

BTW, usually play quarters [25/50/75] but have on occassion played Dollars [1,2,3] Dollars with crack.re-crack, double bump, blitzers can get expensive..

and you can't get an old fashioned out of a BUBBLER

I haven't played Sheepshead in like 10 years. I think we would start out playing that and then switch to "President" (also called Asshole) because we needed something that required little thought...

Played with a guy who always picked on crap and always called my ace. We called this guy a "pick 'n shitter"

This guy would also lead his short suit to the Picker. Whattan idiot.

best part was picking a pinch light and finding a way to win.

Played for luch money and later for toll money (traveling back from Wausau to Chicago)

I hate the game. Everyone I played with growing up - grandparents, parents, siblings, relatives - would rip me a new one if I played the wrong card. I stopped playing when I was old enough to say "no".
