I have a few people on my list who are tough to shop for. Just thought it might be fun to toss around some fun or unique ideas.

I'm getting my mom a gift card to the local yuppie food store. She'd never shop there otherwise and has been begging for years for us to stop getting them "stuff." Dad may still like getting stuff so I'm still working on him...

A vintage Oilers/T.T. jersey XL will do just fine here...Sis.

I would get them/him/her a seat on a raft down the Grand Canyon.

You can always get a seat on a private trip if you can't get one organized yourself:

http://www.gcpba.org/

..or you can get a ride on a commercial trip.

http://www.nps.gov/grca/

I have done a private trip with friends and strangers before and just loved it. One of those trips of a lifetime...18 days were just to short really. Between the river/whitewater, the hikes and the scenery it is just amazing. I am on the list for a permit again and get quite a few notices of private spots available after a cancellation. I Just have not been able to wrangle up enough people fast enough this year. :(

Gift card (her) and a Gift card (him). My parents are so hard to buy for too. Just buy for the kids and pass on the adults.

I just got my former mom-in-law a copy of Silver Spoons, just translated from the original Italian, it's a thousand traditional Italian recipes. Hopefully she invites me over whenever she makes something...

Behave! ... or I'm gonna put you on a raft going down the Grand Canyon ... :P

What's the budget?

Well, my budget this year is cheap, but I was talking more in general, just kinda fun to share interesting ideas.

When I first started reading that, I'm like "wow, she must be a Ricky Schroeder fan."

My parents are so hard to buy for because when they want something, they just go out and buy it. I've been making some home movies on DVD from past pictures, slides, movies, etc and they love that, of course...but I just haven't had any time to do that this year. A home DVD and a gift card was what I've been giving in the past.... I have to think about this year though.

Well, you could name a star after them with the International Star Registry (http://www.starregistry.com/).

Then, when they see you've wasted money on a scam like that on their behalf, they'll learn to be a little better at dropping gift idea hints in the future.

Giving a rubber chicken is another favorite idea of mine that has a similar effect. :D

You've given me an idea. National Geographic (https://www3.nationalgeographic.com/genographic/index.html) has done a genetic study and if you send them a saliva sample, they'll trace your roots back 30,000 years. There's a book that goes with it too.

I built one of this company's 17 foot kayak kits and love the boat. These kayaks require a bit more maintenance than poly boats but they are fun to build.

Ya ya...I know you are not spending much but this is the kind of stuff I like to do.

Anything to be different, I suppose.

Another idea: Check discount retailers and resale shops (and goodwill and Salvation Army) for the ugliest vase you can find. Did this for a wedding gift once too, and they thought it was hilarious.

nah, we were a Jewish litter, so had a little nip, but the good stuff is still in place.

I am having second thoughts about emailing Ziggy my measurments. I'd probably order the Dirk Diggler edition and it would fall off. Wait, I could shrink it in the dryer! Have both my pride and a snug fit.
