Raiders week: Wednesday practice report

By Greg A. Bedard

Green Bay - Here we go:

QB Brett Favre (elbow/shoulder) was back at practice and taking part on a limited basis. He threw about a dozen passes early in the session and didn't air any of them out. He did throw one nice 25-yarder. His ball looked fine. He spent the rest of practice either handing off or resting. Looked like a light day for him;

QB Aaron Rodgers left practice after jog throughs and did not return. We don't know the reason yet. I didn't see him throw a pass;

That left Craig Nall as the quarterback for most of the practice open to the media. Let's put it this way: if the Packers need Nall to play in a big spot this Sunday, they're in trouble. He looked very, very rusty. Most of his passes were inaccurate high and behind receivers. He also bounced a couple. That being said, the guy just got here;

CB Charles Woodson, RT Mark Tauscher, LB Tracy White, DT Johnny Jolly and TE Bubba Franks did not particpate in practice. Jolly was the only one not to attend practice. LT Chad Clifton left after jog throughs;

The starting guards for much of practice were Jason Spitz (left) and Junius Coston (right). Tony Moll was at RT and Daryn Colledge played LT;

The defensive backfield didn't have any changes. Aaron Rouse particpated more but was behind Nick Collins. Will Blackmon looks near full strength;

Witnessed a funny moment before practice when cornerback Jarrett Bush attempted to navigate the still snow-covered Hutson Center parking lot. With his cleats on, Bush couldn't stay upright as hard as he tried. He looked like he was on skates, was able to hold his balance for a second, and then fell on his rear -- much to the amusement of about 10 of his teammates. Although he was covered in snow, Bush was a good sport about it.

Miami-boy Bedard better keep his mouth shut. He'll be the next one on his ass.

I don't get why they don't just walk over there in regular tennis shoes and change into cleats when they get there... :?:

They would have to tape their ankles on the practice field.

And that's a problem, why? Does tape melt inside the Hutson Center? Are trainers not allowed in?

Sounds like the tape is over their shoes.

Right. You change into your workout gear, walk over to the Hutson Center, change into your cleats and then tape them up. Why is this so hard?

The players dont tape their own ankles. Trainers do that.

I really dont know. Maybe once they hit the practice field, coaches want them ready to go.

Probably more convenient to have your ankles taped in an organized training room.

And then fall on your ass on your way over to the practice field and break your tail bone, thus ending your season and gaining a nagging injury for the rest of your career.

Taping 100 to 120 ankles takes a while. Generally, there is a pecking order, with the experienced vets getting it done at their chosen time relative to getting dressed. Players go in and out of the training room getting taped, and hang around the locker room to complete dressing and get on the field. Some dress or partially dress while others are getting taped, and some who were taped early finish getting dressed while others get taped.

If they all dressed and walked over to practice first, the first to get taped would be waiting around a long time before practice started without much to do. Others would be waiting a long time to get taped. The locker room is a better place for them to wait and relax, or meet with coaches, etc.

Perhaps the Packers should make sure there is a proper path for them to walk on, or transport them if slipping is a concern? How about a tunnel?????

How about we give Bush some boots and a shovel and he could actually earn his paycheck.

* Brett Favre decided it would be better if he waited until Thursday to take most of the practice reps. He said his elbow feels "better" but does not yet have full feeling in his hand;
* QB Aaron Rodgers missed practice with a pulled hamstring that he suffered at the end of Tuesday's practice. Rodgers could miss "a week, maybe two" according to coach Mike McCarthy. That would leave the recently arrived Craig Nall as the backup to a starter that still hasn't regained all of the feeling in his right hand. And while McCarthy said Nall looked "great" in practice today....Well, unless Nall suddenly morphed into Tom Brady after the media left practice, I'm not buying it;
* The MRI on the shoulder of DT Johnny Jolly was "not good." The Packers will give it a little more time, but it seems more and more likely that Jolly is headed for injured reserve.

Well I didn't know they were doing it half naked. Where do I sign up to help with the taping...?

If jolly needs some rest why don't they just keep him to the side and have him have a 5-6 week resting time...

We will need him in the playoffs, Harrell / Muir can take his spot until then...

Depends on how tore up it is.

If it's real bad, he won't play this year. You are better off IRing him and getting quality surgery. It takes a long time to rehab those shoulders and you want the guy healthy next year. If you fool around, he might have trouble getting back by NEXT season.
