On the shoulder, that is.

We all knew an operation was gonna happen when he got IRed, but here's more info on it,

Jolly will require shoulder surgery

The Green Bay Packers placed defensive tackle Johnny Jolly on injured reserve earlier this week because he needs surgery on his injured shoulder.

Jolly was injured on Nov. 19 against the Carolina Panthers and spent the next three games on the 53-man roster while team doctors continued to evaluate his shoulder. Tests last week showed the shoulder had not responded as the medical staff had hoped, and on Tuesday he officially was shut down for the season.

Though it's a blow to the Packers' overall defensive line depth and for Jolly, who had been one of the Packers' most improved players, there are no concerns the injury will threaten his career. He is expected to be ready to participate when the offseason program begins in March.

Jolly started seven of the first 10 games and had 31 tackles, one sack and five pass deflections. He was injured on the first series against the Panthers but remained in the game until he hurt it again while throwing the key block on a 94-yard punt return for a touchdown by Tramon Williams. He actually returned to play four more defensive snaps before he was taken out of the game.

At that point, the Packers called his injury "significant" but still held out hope he could return for the stretch drive or the playoffs.

To replace Jolly, Packers General Manager Ted Thompson claimed defensive tackle Conrad Bolston off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings.

One thing has bothered me in this whole deal. Why can't they announce what is specifically wrong with John's shoulder? There about 20 different things you can do to screw up a shoulder. It doesn't sound like a rotator cuff or something super serious, why don't they just say what's wrong with him?

My non-professional, un-informed guess is that he dislocated it and in doing so tore some of the tissues around it. The only reason I think this is the fact that they initially thought he would be back in three weeks, and kept pushing it later. From what I know, a sprain is not enough to require surgery, just lots of rest. Seeing that he needs surgery I'd guess it's more extensive than a sprain.

First of all, real funny, nice post subject. Secondly, CRAP, that hurts. Thank God we are so deep in that area. And TT got so much criticism for getting Harrell, well, that's looking better and better, ain't it? I hope he can grow up real quick, this whole rotation thing is one of the biggest reason our defense is so successful, especially against the run, and this will hurt some. But, of all positions, this is the one we can probably overcome an injury to, receiver being second, IMO, we have so much depth there too.

I'm very excited and happy about this year, but every time we talk about our young DT's, I think ahead to next year.

Jolly, right now, is one of the better all around DT's in the NFC in my opinion. He collapses the pocket a little, but he's esspecially effective against the run.

I see Harrell as a similar player. Right now Harrell is playing OK, but he obviously needs to get stronger and more sound in his technique before he reaches Jolly's level (or higher).

Jolly has a rough off season ahead of him with the shoulder, but he can still lift his legs and core. That is the most important part. Harrell should be able to have a fantastic off season. Jolly could easily make 5% or 10% gains. I could see Harrell making 20% gains in one year and maybe more. The point I'm trying to get at is that one of these players is really good now and hasn't seen his ceiling. One was a dominate college player who's playing OK but has the oppertunity to have a kick ass off season and be a very good, if not outstanding player.

With Jolly and Harrell as all around players, Pickett as the run specialist and Williams as the pass rush specialist, I think we can have the strongest, deepest DT rotation in the league. If our CB's can just hold on one more year, next year can be every bit as good as this year with some of our younger players again taking big steps forward. And all of this is not including the other 30 promising young players on this team who look to be capable of huge leaps.

Too many things can go wrong though. Kamp could go down. Chuck and Wood can quickly go from savvy vet's to washed up. Favre, Jennings, Driver could all go down. Grant, Clifton, Tauscher. . . We have a shot right now. I guess I'm excited to take it but whenever I think about Jolly and Harrell, I get excited for the future. I really like both of those guys.

Jolly was a stud this year. Hope he makes a full recovery and can help out next season. What a steal in the sixth (?) round. Nice thread title

Nick, I think your on drugs  You can't be serious. I love our DT's but besides Pickett, we have a bunch of guys who struggle when they are relied upon to shoulder the load. They are great rotation guys but I don't think any of them as of now are a whole lot more than that.

No Dog.

We have one of the best DLine groupings in the league. Not only are they capable guys, they are a young bunch and going to improve together.

Yeah, that's about my thoughts as well. I don't get the "East German Secret Police" secrecy about the whole thing, tho.

The Packers said shortly after it happened that it was a possible rotator tear.

I was probably overstating it when I said "stud." But he's been very good, as have several of our D-Linemen.

You love a bunch of guys that can't shoulder the load?

Once again, you prove your complete lack of knowledge pertaining to anything football.
