Packers' CB and DE dynamic duos

Much of the Packers' success this season has been attributed the offense, but their defense, under defensive coordinator Bob Sanders, should not be overlooked.

The Packers have the third best offense in the league, which often overshadows their No. 11 ranked defense. The Packers' defense is ranked No. 6 at pressuring the quarterback this season and was ranked No. 4 last year. This defensive unit has been under the direction of Sanders for two seasons and has been the most consistent area of the Packers organization.

The base 4-3 defensive scheme that Sanders employs challenges opponents on every snap. One of the main reasons this defense is so impressive is because of the dynamic duos the Packers field at cornerback and defensive end.

CBs Charles Woodson and Al Harris provide the Packers secondary with a pair of outstanding 10-year veterans. They give Sanders the ability to over play the run at times because he doesn't have to worry about leaving Woodson or Harris is one-one matchups. Their size, both are 6-foot-1, and press man techchniques off the line of scrimmage have given them the advantage over most receivers in NFL for years. However, both CBs are also formidable run-support players due to their strength and instincts.

The ability to pressure the quarterback has been another mainstay of the Packers' defense under Sanders. Relentless DEs Aaron Kampman (12 sacks) and pass-rush specialist Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila (9.5 sacks) have been another dynamic duo over the past two seasons. With 14 years of experience between them, both have developed impressive pass-rush packages and counters for offensive tackles to contend with.

Sanders should be given a great deal of credit for putting an aggressive scheme together that most offensive coordinators have a tough time game planning against. Being a defensive coach for 15 seasons, I can really appreciate the fact that he has two outstanding dynamic duos that give him great flexibility, which allow him to use many different wrinkles within the scheme.
