Lions almost hired McCarthy

Posted: Saturday December 29, 2007 08:36AM ET

But for a decision by Steve Mariucci three years ago, it's entirely possible that Mike McCarthy would be coaching for the Detroit Lions instead of against them Sunday at Lambeau Field. Mariucci was seeking an offensive coordinator to replace retiring Sherman Lewis in January 2005. McCarthy was available, having reached a mutual agreement with the Saints to depart after five seasons as coordinator. McCarthy flew to Detroit for the interview, was picked up at the airport by Mariucci and spent the entire day at the Lions' facility. Mariucci hired Ted Tollner. According to a report, Matt Millen wasn't pleased when Mariucci failed to hire someone with a fresh offensive approach or that the decision had been made when Millen was out of town tending to a family emergency. It apparently drove another wedge between them that culminated in Mariucci's firing a few days after a Thanksgiving Day defeat.

The Lions never do anything right! They were not smart enough to hire M3. This is the team that drove away the best RB to ever play the game!

Well, even if they had hired him as offensive coordinator, there wouldn't be any guarantees that Millen would have hired McCarthy after Mooch's firing..
