From Z'sweekly NFL rankings (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/writers/dr_z/01/02/rankins.part1/index.html):

4. Green Bay Packers (13-3)
Preseason 6-10. One of my more spectacular mistakes, with the best still to come. With the Pack returning from an 8-8 season, with the QB finishing 25th-ranked, I thought this would the season of his farewell tour, with many handshakes, some heartthrobs, a few tears and a bright look at a future for which no one would be prepared. Here and there a few brave souls predicted that Green Bay would rise to runner-up position, behind the Bears, but I didn't see one forecaster anticipating the glories to come.

Yup, he's still boxed in his New Yawk fantasy world, ignoring anything in Flyover Country.

Didn't read the article, from your quote, though, I took away he was kicking himself in the but for his pre season prediction. Am I missing something?

The whole article is "comparing end of season power rankings with (Dr. Z's) preseason predictions", all in all he was wrong a lot; thus adding more fuel to the fire of those who consider such preseason prognostication meaningless.

About us he's basically saying "I thought they wouldn't be good, and I thought this would be a Favre farewell tour. I was wrong, who wasn't?" I believe Bob McGinn saw it coming, and if I could find a link to his article, I'd be happy to send it to Dr. Z. Anybody have it?

The best part of his 'article' is he heads it with a huge photo of Brett Favre.
Talk about selling out..............

He also hasn't talked to Peter King, who has commented that the only person who saw the Pack with double-digit wins and overcoming the Bears was Bob McGinn. And King thought McGinn was suffering from the August heat.

Football Outsiders also had the Pack winning the division. Those are the only two I know of, and they aren't the biggest names in national football coverage.

How many of us were off??

Who foresaw the Jets collapse? Buccaneers in the playoffs. The Bears?

The national media kept thinking the Cardinals and 49'ers would be greatly improved.

The Steelers and Chargers were overrated.

Silly me thought the Falcons would do better without Vick!!

Getting to the heart of it, this is why we like football. The oblong spheriod can bounce in any direction. It is why casinos get most of their action on NFL football.

Between now and September there will be prediction threads posted here. They are no better or worse than Dr. Z's predictions; and worth as much.

The outcome of any game is in doubt. That's why football is exciting.

BTW 13-3 will be tough to match.

This is a . . . sagacious post. At least the good doctor didn't try to pretend he saw this kind of season coming, as so many sports writers/sports talk people do.

I can't find the article, but I recall the preseason sideline interview with KGB a few months back when he sounded like he was really chugging the koolaid. People had a lot of fun with that, like, whoa kid, good to be excited, but be realistic. I guess it wasn't just false confidence! He was right to be excited.

I didn't know of anyone that thought the Jets were that good. The Steelers faded and the Chargers simply took a while to get going.

I'll admit I thought AZ was going to be good.

Hear! Hear!!

That's why football definitely is so exciting.

As a fan too it helps to have a decent sense of humour or you'll risk a visit with white shirts and pants.
