Guard Junius Coston won't be part of the Packers' playoff run. The team placed him on season-ending injured reserve today and promoted tackle Orrin Thompson from the practice squad.

Coston sustained a strained calf in Sunday's regular-season finale against the Detroit Lions. His injury means Daryn Colledge is virtually assured of starting at left guard in the Jan. 12 divisional playoff game.

The question now is who will be the right guard: Jason Spitz or Tony Moll. Spitz sustained a quad injury against the Lions though it was not believed to be as serious as Coston's injury. Moll finished the game at right guard, but the Packers were holding out hope Spitz will recover quickly.

Coston started seven games this season and appeared in 13. He missed time during the season due to an ankle injury.

Thompson spent four weeks on the Packers' active roster earlier this season.

The Packers return to practice on Friday morning after taking four days off.

I agree. If Spitz pans out, we're in really good shape injury wise. With the way Harrell has stepped up and the layoff of our important Dlineman, I think we have just enough fire power to have a good showing on defense. It's not the strength that it was before Jolly went down, but if everyone else is near 100% and Harrell takes another step forward, it's good enough. It hasn't been good enough the last few weeks, but there are some reasons to believe it will be better in the playoffs.

Coston was better than Spitz, that's why he kept getting chances.. The whole offensive line has been un-settled the entire year..

Imagine what could've been accomplished if they had 5 "cast in stone" starters the whole year :!: :!:

I thought he's taken a nice step each of the last few weeks. Rarely do you get growth this late in the year, but I think Harrell is a guy who has gotten better in the last quarter. He had, by far, his best game against Detroit. I don't think he's as good as JOlly, but I think he's playing well enough now against the run that Harrell should start and Williams should be the kick ass pass rush specialist that he was before he got moved to the starting position. As soon as Williams took the starting role he has 0 sacks. Before he was starting he had 7. Before Williams was starting we were 9th in the league in rushing. After, we dropped to 13. I think Williams is at his best in pass rush situations and Harrell is best at run stopping situations. I think the coaches should play to their strengths (kind of the way they did by starting the 2nd year JOlly over the vet, Williams in the beginning of the year).

the state of the line at present should cause MM to scale back the offense some. they'll need to be ready for the blitz that is sure to come. dallas layed a blueprint for playing us if our wide-open offense is the plan of the day. Brett was a sitting duck because of the slow developing, no protection, plays MM was calling.

If they had 5 "cast in stone" starters this year, Favre would have gotten killed because Colledge was inadequate in protecting him. Things had to get moved around.

Actually, Coston was better than Colledge. Maybe. Spitz had settled into full-time starting duty, and Coston and Colledge were battling for the other spot.

I guess I meant to say the same 5 starters all year, ala what Pacfn in Md suggested..

I don't think Coston was the player that was either going to make or break the season. He got time because other faltered, not because he all of sudden became a dominate player.
