RETURN OF THE FAVRE

January 5, 2008

The past several years have been plagued with endless debate regarding whether Packers quarterback Brett Favre would, should, or could continue to play in the NFL. Though many are guilty (including us) for continuing the discussion, the topic was first raised by Favre himself more than five years ago, and Favre himself continued to keep it an issue by engaging in an annual debate on whether he should stay or go.

Buoyed by an overachieving collection of young teammates in 2006, he made a relatively quick decision to return for 2007.

And it was a brilliant move.

Favre generated in 2007 his highest passer rating since 1996, the only year in which the Packers won a Super Bowl with Favre at the helm. And his average gain per attempt of 7.8 was the biggest of his career.

The result was a 13-1 record against the 30 franchises not named Chicago Bears, and the second seed in the NFC playoff field.

Unless the Cowboys quickly get out of their late-season funk quickly, the Packers might be hosting the NFC championship game, which would almost certainly result in another Super Bowl appearance.

And if Favre and the Packers can find a way to upset the greatest . . . team . . . ever, then Favre could very well be the top story of 2008.

Miracles do happen. But to beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl would have to be on the same magnitude as the USA hockey team beating the Soviets in the '80 Olympics.

Thank you. Now we know that not only has it been done, but it's due to happen again...

Not really. The Soviets were basically undefeated for YEARS, not just one season.
