* I can't be the only one here who remembers that during the 90s, the 49er/Cowboy/Parcell-Patriots era, there was a time that Favre was UNDERcovered.

The biggest Favre takeaway according to Twitter is that Favre acknowledges he went to rehab 3 times (once prior to the publicly known Kansas City facility featuring the PC run by Holmgren and once more after that).

It took until the third time that Favre was willing to admit that alcohol was the underlying problem.

i always got a kick out of the fact that everyone kept praising him after he had his first stint in rehad, even though everyone in the UP and the northwoods of wisconsin still knew he was a giant drunk who made a giant dickhead ut of himself on almost a weekly basis. even though the national media and packer media ball lickers would keep telling us he was completely changed and clean

this is a pretty good example of the lengths the "packer media" will go to in order to make the team and players look squeaky clean

King is someone Tex would obliviously call a "leftist asshole."

I tend to agree with King on a lot of off-topic stuff, but his football stuff nowadays are dull and full of bias. For example, when news broke out that P-Mann, as a stud college young un, allegedly assaulted a chick sexually, and subsequently, the Mannings allegedly conspired to scapegoat an African-American player for the vicious crime, King was like, "Payton Manning is incapable of sexual assault and no fucking way he's a racist."

Sports Illustrated oughta hire Norman Chad to replace King.

Packers local media is not the harshest environment, but you take this too far. I think anyone who knew anything about addiction and rehab thought that going in for painkillers and then still drinking was doomed to fail and I think that was reflected in local coverage. In fact, I believe alcohol was brought up in the Holmgren/Favre PC. Unless it was published somewhere else, no one is punishing stories about where Favre was drinking Friday night.

And the fact that he was still drinking afterward was covered as well.

More telling are the public fibs Holmgren was willing to tell. I wonder if he was more honest with the player than with the media.

In a QB-plagued league, the Gunslinger single-handily turned around a moribund Packer franchise. Favre ain't a saint, and I've ceased with the GOAT reference after the truth got out about Favre's pompous refusal to throw the rock to an underdog UDFA wideout in practice, but cut Favre some slack.

i don't recall hearing anyone talk about how he was still drinking. i remember having to roll my eyes everytime i had to hear about him kicking the habit though

and since we're ripping on king bert and spilling things about him

he also doesn't like having to pay or tip for things even though he's worth buttloads of money

They kept talking about it. Once that detail spilled, and it spilled early, they kept up the story that this was strictly for pain killer addiction. I don't remember what the substance abuse policy was at the time, but there was suspicion the Packers wanted it to be pain killers rather than alcohol to keep possible League action at bay. But I don't remember the details.

However, once they got there publicly, Favre kept mentioning that he didn't have a problem with alcohol.

That "last" article provided the link to the one that I provided above. In addition to the part 'bout Jervey and Johnson buying a lion, the article hinted that Favre and Sharpe weren't best of friends. Read the article and be smarter at football.

Favre and assorted Packers busted up some locals and a bar by my cabin. Locals started it and were sent home, Packers paid for it and were escorted across county lines.

Favre and Chmura use to go to a bar on Water St in Milwaukee and hit the alcohol hard in the mid-90s. They would be kept in a back room with a bunch of women who were not their wives.

I remember a story that Paul Hornung told a decade or so ago. Brett appeared on television program with Hornung and was asked if he was still drinking and Brett looked the camera square and said, "I honestly haven't had a sip of alcohol after coming out of rehab."

Hornung had to stop from laughing because as he told the story he and Brett played golf all day before the shoot at the golf course and he said Brett must have drank a case of beer on the golf course.

This must have been shot in the summer of 1997.

I am one of the biggest Favre honks around because Favre was the boy who refused to grow up and he played the game with so much passion, and his life off the field made me giggle. I suggest reading "The Gunslinger" biography on Favre. You don't need to read Peter King, it's all in there.

He made the decision days before the start of the season to hold the team hostage. Favre who just signed a new deal with the Packers call Sharpe out to the media. Sharpe got bent out of shape. Oh I see. I kinda sensed that not many homo sapiens at 1265 Lombardi Ave. shed a tear when Sharpe left town.

Sharpe was a good player. Coulda been a HOFmer. I liked him on the now-defunct NFL Playbooks. Sharpe knew football and always referred to the Packers as his Packers. Fuck the NFL Network for cancelling the show - I got smarter at football from watching that show.

You sure about restructuring his deal to get Sharpe a re-do? I don't remember that at all. But its been a long time.

I read Peter King more and more after Paul Zimmerman's stroke, and many 15-minute toilet breaks were spent on my smartphone on si.com. I really appreciated King's ability to get piece together a good narrative from collecting multiple players' and coaches' perspectives, usually after someone's career day. However, he wasn't much of a newsbreaker (which is completely fine) or tactical analyst, and aside from practice-squad-guy-makes-good, he really loved the frontrunners and status quo. He did have good front-office connections, and I trusted him to report the mood of the room in league meetings (which also meant he was useful to deliver trial balloons or have folks spin a better version of what they wished would have happened). You could tell most of his analysis came from "this coach told me..." He threw in his liberal politics, but I didn't engage in a lot of critical thinking or learning from reading his football or non-football blurbs. King was like Adult Contemporary after Led Zeppelin disbanded.

But big props on achieving and maintaining his weight loss. I now feel like a heel for craving another scoop of ice cream, and the kitchen is just one room away.

Okay, so I'm driving through the last MMQB column, and I'm softening on all the things I liked about Peter King. Dammit, maybe I'll even like a Peter Cetera ballad. Maybe the soft-focus, longform stories from being embedded in lockerrooms and war rooms and hotel rooms aren't that bad in a world of hot-takes and veiled-threat writing. I think most of King's better background sources have aged off their rosters and executive offices.

Specifically on the Favre part: I don't understand how someone could get hyper on Vicodin, although I've worked in enough rehab centers to know that holding off withdrawal and DTs is its own reward.

And you snitched to Peyton Manning? WTF?

As a kid, I read "Bad As I Wanna Be," Dennis Rodman's autobiography. Awesome book.

I think alotta folks, black and white alike, hate Rodman cos he likes Pearl Jam, as if the Worm should be listening to Em, Pac, Rage and even Hootie instead of Pearl Jam. Now I'm sophisticated, and therefore, into Britpop acts like Coldplay, Snow Patrol, Keane, etc., so I ain't a fan of Pearl Jam. But Rodman was and remains my favorite hoop playa of all time.
