Raiders sign Packers' Tollefson off practice squad

    By Dylan B. Tomlinson

Defensive end Dave Tollefson, who the Packers took in the seventh round of the NFL draft was signed off the Packers practice squad by the Oakland Raiders according to the NFL Players Association.

Tollefson spent the entire 2006 season on the Packers practice squad and is only the second of Ted Thompson's 12 2006 draft choices who is no longer with the team.

Fourth-round pick Cory Rodgers was cut by the Packers after training camp.

Not exactly true. Practice squad contracts expired at the end of the season. The Packers signed others on their practice squad to "futures contracts" a day or two after the season ended. They did not do that with Tollefson, who had been placed on the practice squad injured reserve list (the first time I heard of that list!) In short, Tollefson was a free agent, whom the Packers seemed to have little interest in, probably due to his long history of injuries in college, which now seemed to carry over to the pros.

What a waste of the 253rd pick in the draft. Think of who else we could have had...

I figured this guy was a project when they drafted him. Then Hunter (undrafted rookie) made the roster and he didn't, I doubted he would be around. I thought maybe they would send him to NFL Europe....I guess not, unless that's what the Raiders are going to do.

What really blows is that pick 252 was....Marques Colston.

    Ouch.

We'll never know but it's not out of the question TT would have picked him. Big receiver ideally suited for WCO. Wouldn't that have been something!

"practice squad injured reserve list "

That is a dubious status indeed!

[QUOTE=George Cumby] ...every draft (Ted) would pick a solid, dependable, smart, athletically limited linebacker...the guy who isn't doing drugs, going to strip bars, knocking around his girlfriend or making any plays of game changing significance.

If Tollefson is the next Reggie White I'll freak out. Until then, I'm handling it well.
