Bretsky, it doesn't matter...

You can't compare what Ball will have done with another team and what he would have done with us... our RB's are an afterthought - doesn't matter who is back there, they are not going to produce much b/c they won't be used much - and when they are, they're running behind one of the worst OL's in the league.

Seriously, I don't want a RB at all in this draft... let Ted troll a $20 bill thru the bars and see what he finds.

Then stand pat at 55 and take him. If you can move down and still get someone like Lacy (if they want him), then that's a win. Not as much of a win as Seattle getting two picks for moving back the same number of places (whoops Ted)

Pick Analysis: "At 230 pounds he's got much better feet than people think. This guy's a three-down tailback. He'll protect the quarterback. He can carry 20 to 25 times a game. For the Packers, who have been running the ball by committee, this is a perfect pick." -- Mike Mayock

Montee Ball gets to go to a Super Bowl in his Rookie season.

Be very happy for him B.

If TT wanted RB his trade down for another 4th (I'm guessing) and grabbing Eddie Lacy looks like a solid move. Could he have done better? It's a crap shoot.

There was size in terms of Tackle and DT remaining on the board. He gave a small present to Aaron Rodgers but well... there he goes...Larry Warford was just selected. Mike Mayock loves this guy.

TT left some decent WR's on the board too.

Eddie Lacy was one of those 'if he falls to me a round later' picks.

I'm watching Damontre Moore drop...that's just sad.

I like the Lacey pick. It would be nice to have teams respect the run game for a change. I'm pretty excited about a Lacey-Harris one-two punch. If he could shed 10 pounds he might pick up some more speed that would be very useful in the pros. Overall, I think this will turn out well.

You really like him, huh, Wood?

It's providing a big need and how can that be too bad.

We had need ... an obvious need I felt at RB A mail carrying power back. A back that can run-run-run the ball. My next priority need was at SS.... followed by 3-4 LB, Tackle (OL) and that followed by SS ILB.

What's bugging me is I hope that TT didn't get taken as that trade down was worth 58 Pts. So far all I see is an additional 6th at Pick #176 that's worth 'only' 21 Pts.

The San Fran 49ers owe the Green Bay Packers, a top third of the 5th Rd. pick.

GO PACKERS ! GO Ted GO !

wist43
04-26-2013, 08:10 PM
I can't begin to fathom what TT is looking at... The problem with the running game is the OL, and McCarthy's absolute refusal to incorporate some power running plays.

12 carries for a 3.8 yard average is what Ted just drafted - and it certainly won't be Lacy's fault either.

So 12 x 3.8 x 16 = 730 yds

We had 9 rushing TD's last year, but Rodgers had 2 of them - so let's give the remaining 7 TD's to Lacy.

TT just spent a 2nd round pick on 730 yds and 7 TD's.

I really didn't think Ted would be dumb enough to do this... so I never really considered this possibility.

Just wow :bang:

Man. I whooped it up when I heard we picked up Lacey. Like, literally went Aww yeah! and pumped my fist. And scared my fiancée while she played Mario. Then she told me she like dar-tone whatever cause he said he wanted to play here. I digress. I think We got late first round, early second round talent here. I think we drafted the best player on the board by far.

I don't know how Lacy will pan out but you need to recalibrate your numbers and expectations. The Packers ran for 9 TDs last year. He is going to get that number plus he might steal a couple of Rodgers TD passes (that could be a wash with play action).

And Denver and Washington somehow will run the ball in zone schemes with Montee Ball in Mile High 3Com Fieldhouse and the Redskins with a 6th round pick and do OK. McCarthy has incorporated some power schemes with Lang and the results haven't been dramatic.

They had 433 attempts total so 12 carries a game looks low. He is an improvement.

That would be nice, but I would honestly just be happy if he gave us the kind of running game that made Aaron Rodgers even scarier to deal with. He could also be a defenses best friend. In the last few years, how many times did they need a tough 1 or 2 yards and they did some dumb play because they didn't have the run game? If he can figure out blitz pickup, and protect the franchise, that will be welcome too.

wist43
04-26-2013, 08:30 PM
Wist, I respect you. Why?

First off it's a throw away position for us - TT has always outfitted the position with low cost players b/c the position was little more than incidental to what they predominantly do on offense - which is of course, throw the ball.

As long as the back can pick up the blitz, get what meager yards can be scratched out behind the perpetually poor run blocking OL in front of him - and that's good enough.

No matter what, the Packers are not going to become a team that pounds the ball. Green Bay really is RB Siberia - it isn't so much Lacy himself, although I'm not a fan, it's the position itself - for the Green Bay Packers, it's simply not worth investing much. McCarthy will never change his playcalling, and running the ball will never be a staple of what this team does offensively??

So why invest a high pick in a position that will always be incidental to what you do offensively, while at the same time other areas of your team that do matter are in disarray??

It's a terrible pick.

Glad I wasted my time reading that post....

Great pick.

Loving the draft so far, both picks fill needs and could both be starters on opening day. I don't know why anyone would complain about the Lacy pick, big back without a lot of miles on him like Ball has. Him and Harris should be a good 1-2 punch for us next season. Now hopefully we can draft a good blocking FB in the later rounds to help the running game even more.

wist43
04-26-2013, 08:35 PM
Wist, did you want them to address running back in the draft? If so, when did you want them to address it? Who were you comfortable with them choosing?

Actually, I liked the guy that went right after him - Christine Michael.

He had some character flags though... so that might have knocked him off some boards. As for RB, as I said in the other post... it's such an incidental position to what the Packers do. They'll never consistently run the ball. Certainly not enough to justify a 2nd round pick.

That's my complaint... not so much Lacy - although I think he'll be super average - as it is how the Packers use their RB's, and that I agreed with Ted all these years that tavern trolling is probably the best policy :)

As for RB, as I said in the other post... it's such an incidental position to what the Packers do. They'll never consistently run the ball. Certainly not enough to justify a 2nd round pick.

Maybe TT and MM realized how much more they could get out of the offense if they had a guy like Lacy. It tells you how damn good Rodgers is that he can carry an offense without much of a run game. If Lacy can make the opposing D respect the run or just the threat of the run, then it's going to make our offense less predictable, and more deceptive. Perhaps we could even take the top off the D a little more.
