    Schein hands out final grades

    A

Packers—The limited turnovers and brilliance of Brett Favre, the discovery of Ryan Grant, the tough defense and the vastly improved special teams equaled a truly unforgettable 13-win 2007 season for Michael J. McCarthy and his Packers.

Vikings—This is the toughest team to give a final grade. Yes, Brad Childress' team overachieved with an 8-8 mark. Yes, the Vikings went on a nice four-game win streak between Weeks 12 and 15 to put themselves in position to make the playoffs. But Minnesota then got torched by Todd Collins at home. And the Vikings lost in Week 17 to avoid a winning season. The season-ending performance for Tarvaris Jackson typified his season with moments of brilliance and futility. I do think Jackson showed enough to be the starter next year. Now if Rick Spielman can actually bring in some receivers ...

Lions—A 6-2 start had Lions fans punch drunk on Jon Kitna's Kool-Aid. A 7-9 finish reminded Lions fans that Detroit has been rebuilding since 1957. This team needs a new offensive coordinator, offensive line, running back, quarterback and defense other than Ernie Sims. Oh yeah — a new general manager, too. Other than that, things are pretty good.

Bears—The offensive line underachieved and broke down. So did the previously vaunted defense. The loss to Washington, with a shot to save the season and make the playoffs, epitomized the Chicago struggles. Chicago still has no idea who its quarterback of the future is. And the sad part about the whole Martz thing(he doesn't run enough for us) Millen knew what his philosophy was, and they were just fine with it when they were 6 - 2 ....
