  • Peter King's "Let's Play The Expansion Game"

There's not much of an article on CNNSI from Peter King, but he brought up an interesting discussion point: if the NFL were to expand outside of the U.S., where should it expand to? The NFL has played games in Tokyo and Mexico City.

I think this is the inevitable evolution of the game. Want to compete with Soccer on a global scale? The NFL will need to open up franchises in cities outside of the United States.

The discussion question: where? (and why?)

Hawaii, I know its part of the united states, but at least when you had to play them at home it would be like a bowl game for Appalachia State.

Peter: I'll tell you what it's not for, son. And when I do, you'll understand why I can never go back to Sea World.

Mexico City makes sense from a logistics standpoint, as would Sao Palo or Buenos Aries. I guess we'd leave Canada alone as they have their own league.

But you gotta believe the Japanese would love football, given the cultural exaltation of big men. But I wouldn't relish playing Monday night in Tokyo, then having to be in NE for a game the following Sunday.

I think Mexico City is definitely the first place you put one. The Latino population is the U.S. is ever-growing, so a connection with Mexico makes a ton of sense.

Perhaps you put on in Europe too, to help solidify the NFL-E interest and compete directly against soccer. I guess I'd suggest Berlin, or maybe Paris. Any other European cities that would work? I think expansion would have to be incremental by country or by geographic region, so only one European team would be necessary out of the shute.

Germany, I mean they have to suuffer through NFLE with new players every year, yet they still fill the stadiums. I think that would be cool.
