Packers pick Ball to replace Brandt

Rumor has it, the Packers didn't even have to solicit candidates. Their phone started ringing as soon as Brandt left.Originally posted by MJZiggyWow, that was fast...
Pretty desirable position. Team on the rise and in great cap shape now and for the future, with no salary bombs lurking in the existing contracts. A chance to be the chief negotiator without the GM having a similar background to second guess your work.
Ball is an interesting guy, with a coaching background. Might be an interesting presence in a negotiation, with a 15 year career as a strength and conditioning coach.

Well, your average football player is probably not team President material either!Originally posted by KYPackThe part about him being "an ex-strngth coach" gave me pause. Those kind of guys usually aren't financial genuses. Brandt was a corporate attorney type guy.
Hopefully, this guy wioll keep us in line.

Not the same Jerry Ball who played a lot of years for Detroit and others (if you are even serious in your comment).Originally posted by the_idle_threatAs I recall, Jerry Ball was a pretty good Defensive Tackle back in the day, too.
I wonder if ol' Gilbert threw his hat in the ring for this as well ...
This Jerry Ball was coaching already in 1982, apparently right out of college

Now if the Packers could pick up Jackie Ball ('70's trivia knowledge required), we could have a legitimate sack!! OMG, possibly the worst post in my tenure!!
PENIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There I said it."...one thing about me during the course of a game, I get emotional and say things my grandmother lets me know about later. But nobody wants to win on that field anymore than I do, no one." Brett Favre

Brandt recently appeared on 107.5 (a couple days ago, after he was gone. He's friends with Harry Sydney so he got called on I guess).
Anyway, when talkign about his job, I really got the impression that the number crunching was part of it, but a less important part. Really, I think anyone can get familiar with the CBA and NFL legal language and interperate black and white phrases at a high level. Brandt sort of confirmed that by down playing that part when asked about it.
What he did get into, and what he seemed to be very proud of was his negotiations. Apparently there is a grey line that you have to balance as a negotiator trying to sign a team friendly contract while at the same time, making the player feel comfortable, appreciated and not ripped off. He talked about some of the contracts he worked on and talked about how proud he was for balancing on that tight rope so well.
Anyway, at the end of the day, I think the least of our worries is finding someone to read through the CBA and figure out when you can use a 2nd round tender or when you can use a transition tag, franchise tag or clever clause to roll ahead money. Seems to me that is the least of our worries. My new understanding is that a negotiator is important and with that in mind, that ball guy seems as qualified as any if he's a good people person. He can have an assistant sort through CBA language if that's not his strong suite.Formerly known as JustinHarrell.
