NFL Network's Adam Schefter reports the Chiefs have placed the franchise tag on DE Jared Allen.

Allen, 25, led the NFL in sacks last year with 15.5 despite sitting out the first two games on suspension. The franchise number for defensive ends is $8.879 million, but the Chiefs will try to work out a long-term deal before the July 15 deadline. He is the most valuable player on their roster.
