The young got younger

Last year everyone talked about how young the Packer team was and they did well. 2007 the average age was 26 yrs. (and 89 days) old. After losing Brett and Bubba that has to bring the average down a bit again.

Wonder how that will affect the Packers in 2008.....or if they are good in 2008, what will 2009, 2010 be like?

There are only 6 who are 30 and older.

Clifton - 31
Woodson - 31
Driver - 33
Harris - 33

One of the reasons I really hope Rodgers is ready to go.

oh, we might still be the youngest, but we won't drop way down with the old guys leaving

lets try and crunch some numbers

53 guys, and the average was about 26.25, so 26.25x53=1391.25 total years old last year
favre 38, davis 39, bubba 30

so 1391.25-107= 1284.25. 1284.25/50=25.685 years old

now, i'm gonna say we take a total of lets say 7 rookies on the roster next year, so we'll have to loose 4 more guys at the average of 25.685

so we have an average age of the remaining 46 players of 1181.51/46=25.685

now its a year later so we add a year to that amount so we have 26.685 for 46 players equals 1227.51

so we add 7 rookies, i'm gonna say they have an average age of about 22 (some come out early, some were redshirted) it should be somewhere around 22, i couldn't find a real number.

so 7x22=154 154+1227.51=1335.51

1381.51/53= 26.067 years old on average

OK fine, so we might be a couple months younger this season, but not much more then last season

It's not like we're losing 38, 39 and 30 years from the roster (107).

In place of the 38 year old we'll have (let's say) a 24 year old
In place of the 39 year old we'll have a 24 year old and the same for the 30 year old.


In the end, it's a net change of 35 years (107-72)


35/53 = 0.66 years of change.


However, at the same time we have a bunch of core players that are beginning to be mainstays who will all gain a year. Let's say we have 32 hold overs. That nearly offsets the 35 years we lost by losing the aging guys. At the end of the day, I think we'll be about the same age. Maybe a little older. Maybe a little younger. I don't think it will be much of a change.

How did you calculate that number, 007?

If you used the average age at the end of the year (after the players all gained 120 days) rather than using the average age at the beginning of last year (before the players aged) it would effect the comparison. If you want to compare apples to apples we have to compare the age of the Packers ending last season to the age ending next season. Or we have to wait till the season begins and compare the age of the Packers when the season starts to the age of the Packers when the season started last year. There is error in this comparision and I think all the error effects the number in the same way (making the roster look younger than it will be)

Also, it sounds like you are averaging the Packers roster including all of the 22 and 23 year old practice squad players. Many of which will be widdled off the roster by the time the 53 is set.



When we get to a point where we can compare apples to apples, I bet it is almost identical in age (within 1% of last years age or 100 days)

If you want to anylize how losing Brett, Davis and Franks effects the age of the roster there is a very simple way to do it that isolates it from the rest of the variables that are skewing your data.


You simply take Bretts age 38 and subtract 24 (probable age of replacement). The do the same for the other two players.

38-24= 14
39-24= 15
30-24= 6

Total 35 years of change

35/53 = 0.66 or 241 days of change.



Unless you are replacing Brett, Bubba and Rob with new born babies, they are not going to effect the roster more than 241 days give or take a week or two.

After that, you consider that the majority of the roster is not getting younger, but rather growing together and I think you are going to get an offsetting effect. I consider the number you have above to be completely unreliable. I'll bet anyone right now that the change in average age of the roster (when comparing beginning of last year to beginning of this year or end of last year to end of this year) will be less than 150 days of change in either direction. I think it's going to be closer to 50, but if I'm going to take mass bets, I want to have a safe number that I can insure victory with.
