Favre's Jersey to be Retired at Opener

I disagree. All ARod needs to do is have ONE great game that night, beat a divisional rival and you have the perfect coming out party.

Favre congrats him after the game and the torch is officially passed.

Rodgers gets injured and goes down in 1st quarter. The backup gets injured just as halftime approaches. The Packers are down by 10 points. Oh my!

Coach McCarthy, or M3 as he is known in some parts, looks longingly into the stands and Favre rises from his seat holding his number 4 retirement jersey in a patent pending unbreakable Lambeau Field glass enclosed frame.

Favre raises the framed retirement jersey above his head as if to say, "Hey look, its a retirement jersey, I'm retired", but someone in the crowd, probably Chuck Norris, stares at the unbreakable glass and dares it to break. And it does indeed break. That miracle is enough to convince Favre to give it another go at least for this game.

Favre removes the retirement jersey from the frame and is escorted into a newly installed trademark pending Lambeau Field cell-phone booth where his every movement is speculated upon by the announcers.

He exits the cell-phone booth wearing the number 4 retirement jersey to a deafening roar that breaks eardrums of kittens and puppies for miles around. Favre goes 21 for 22, 3 tds, and 1 int. The Packers win the game and the retirement ceremony is postponed until the following week.

FWIW I agree with VegasPackFan and Mailman. Get it done early. It would be a mess either way if it happened part way through the season...if the Pack was doing well, it would be a major disctraction, and if they were doing mediocraly or poorly, all the talk would be about how much better they'd be if he was still around.

Rodgers deserves to have his day without Favre leeching off of it. I wish Murphy would have taken that into consideration before making such a disgusting decision. Harlan never would have done it.

Per a radio report I heard Thursday, Harlan supposedly suggested that it be done the first game, or as early in the season as Favre would agree to.

The more I think about it, the first game is fine. Less fanfare for Rodgers as reporters will flock to Favre. Sure, there will be comparisons, but there would be anyway. Besides, Rodger's doesn't deserve any special consideration just because it is his first game.

At least now it will be done and over with, and everyone can move on. I think it would be harder part way into the season having Favre return and everyone reminisce over what could have been this year. It would be Rodger's team for a few weeks or months, but then Favre would come back and everyone would wonder. If things aren't going as well as hoped, many would suggest Favre would have done better. If the team is doing well, many would lament that Favre wasn't getting one last shot at the playoffs.

Personally, I think they should have waited until 2009. But this has nothing to do with Rodgers. I think significant commitments that are forever should show a certain amount of reflection and consideration, not just gut reaction to something that just happened.

They wanted to do this early to have a better chance at good weather. It makes sense to do it at a national prime-time game. If they had done it at the Dallas game (Gold package), the Green package season ticket holders would have been furious. This is the date that made the most sense.

Its a slap in his face becuase its his FIRST NFL start. He has enough pressure as it is, what with being on national television, and being a divisional rivalry. Now he has Favre overshadowing him. You assume Rodgers will be starting the opening game. If he isn't injured he more then likely will but that is far from a sure thing. I am surprised it's the first game because Favre may very well change his mind before then. I don't think for one second this has any bearing on Rodgers "big coming out party". If anything, it takes the pressure off of him because Favre will be on the sideline telling him what to do...

I would bet money Favre doesn't hang out on the sideline during the game. I'd say he'll come out at halftime and they'll honor him, he'll salute the fans and maybe give a speech (shortened from his regular 1 hour talks) and he'll go back in the locker room for the remainder of the game.
In a perfect world, he'll run out as they announce his name as our starting QB.

Who knows what Favre will do. I guess I look at it the other way, that he will be on the sidelines saying goodbye to his teammates. It is however more "Favre-like", to run out and be recognized for a few minutes then bolt.

This will be a teary emotional day for Brett Favre and all Green Bay fans.

I believe that, he'll not waste any time getting off the field after he goes to the sidelines, to shake hands, give BIG Bear Hugs (Donald Driver) and then he'll disappear.

I can't imagine how emotional this day will be for him and the Packer Players, Coach's, TT and us Packer fans. We all knew it had to come but Man O Man. It will be nothing like we ever experienced before.

A day of mixed emotions. For me - SAD.

1. Why do you have to start with that garbage again? We know you hate Rodgers. Let it go.

2 You are clueless if you think Favre is going to tell Aaron what to do. Brett never told ARod anything before, why would he start now?

3.This lessens the pressure on Rodgers? That is a statement of pure ignorance. If Aaron getrs off to a lousy start and the boo birds start flying, especially as people look over to where Favre is, there is a good chance that Arrons head gets screwed with to the point of no repair. Let Aaron settle in before Favre's brought in to retire the jersey. As it is Rodgers could have a big night and nobody would know becuase ESPN will be too busy fellating Favre to even remember there is a game being played.
