Arthroscopic surgery should have KGB ready for training camp. Also, Charles Woodson appears after being absent last week.
With much of the focus of Thursday’s organized team activities practice on Aaron Kampman and the Iowa tornado, the biggest on-the-field news was the revelation defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila had arthroscopic knee surgery on Thursday.
According to McCarthy, Gbaja-Biamila had been bothered by a sore knee throughout the offseason.
“We probably won’t get him back until training camp,” McCarthy said.
Getting back in time and being healthy for camp are vital for KGB, who with his age and salary could be fighting for a roster spot, especially if fourth-round pick Jeremy Thompson impresses in a pass-rushing role.
Running back Ryan Grant, linebacker Nick Barnett and cornerback Al Harris were among those absent. One player who was there was cornerback Charles Woodson, who did not participate last week but was in Green Bay frequently in February and March..
“It’s great to have him back here working,” McCarthy said.
No reason was given for Barnett being absent, though McCarthy said it was not injury related.
Also noteworthy, McCarthy said Barnett or Nick Collins likely would be the players who wear the defensive headset. Part of the decision will come down to which player feels more comfortable
Coach Mike McCarthy last week announced all OTA practices, as well as the June 17-19 minicamp, would be held inside the Don Hutson Center, regardless of the weather. It’s supposed to be 70 on Thursday, but McCarthy said he liked the indoor practices because they provide a “constant” practice environment.
One source, however, while not confirming it, did not scoff at the possibility the practices were moved indoors over fears spies from other teams would attend to get a glimpse of any changes made as the Packers transition from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers.
The logic: fans can easily be removed from the Don Hutson Center and the doors closed before 11-on-11 periods begin. It would be almost impossible to eliminate the railbirds, or prevent anyone from watching across the street with binoculars.
Cullen Jenkins worked almost exclusively at DT. Michael Montgomery started at DE.
Desmond Bishop started for Nick Barnett who did not attend. Alan Barbre again started at LG.
Draft pick Jeremy Thompson's brother Orrin Thompson started at LT in place of Chad Clifton.
Charles Woodson was at the OTA, Tramon Williams replaced Al Harris, with Jarret Bush as the nickle back.
