    C 68 Chris White 6-2 285 23 2 Southern Mississippi FA-05
    G 78 William Whitticker 6-5 338 23 2 Michigan State D7b-05

Three (3) more player out of seven to make the OL. Note: T Kevin Barry is likely out for the Season.

( Total = 3 of 19 spots, that are really open to make OUR team or 16 spots remain )

    QUARTERBACK

    QB 10 Brian Wrobel 6-2 197 24 1 Winona State FA-06

We need a third string QB. (Total = 4 of 19)

    RUNNING BACK

    RB 32 Arliss Beach 5-10 219 22 R Kentucky FA-06
    FB 43 Ben Brown 6-1 246 20 R Tabor College FA-06
    FB 40 A.J. Cooper 6-1 240 22 R North Dakota State FA-06

    FB 48 Vonta Leach 6-0 250 24 3 East Carolina FA-04
    RB 42 Chaz Williams 5-9 210 23 2 Georgia Southern FA-05

add one more SB and FB ( Total = 6 of 19)

There is some flexibility here as we can cut down one player for the RB/FB position if say Najeh Davenport can work both positions.

    TIGHT END

    TE 49 Zac Alcorn 6-4 260 25 R Black Hills State FA-06
    TE 47 Garrett Cross 6-4 245 23 R California FA-05
    TE 88 Bubba Franks **** 6-6 265 28 7 Miami (Fla.) D1-00
    TE 84 Tory Humphrey 6-2 257 23 1 Central Michigan FA-05
    TE 86 Donald Lee 6-4 248 25 4 Mississippi State FA-05
    TE 87 David Martin 6-4 265 27 6 Tennessee D6-01

    We need two (2) more TE's. (Total = 8 of 19)

    WIDE RECEIVER

    WR 83 Marc Boerigter 6-3 220 28 5 Hastings UFA-06 (KC)
    WR 8 Leo Bookman 6-2 212 24 R Kansas FA-06
    WR 19 Vince Butler 6-0 195 25 1 Northwestern Oklahoma State FA-06
    WR 80 Donald Driver **** 6-0 190 31 8 Alcorn State D7b-99
    WR 89 Robert Ferguson 6-1 210 26 6 Texas A&M D2-01
    WR 13 Chris Francies 6-1 193 23 R Texas-El Paso FA-06
    WR 82 Rod Gardner 6-2 215 28 6 Clemson W-05 (Car)
    WR 85 Greg Jennings **** (also some ST's) 5-11 197 22 R Western Michigan D2b-06
    WR Chad Lucas 6-1 201 24 1 Alabama State FA-06
    WR 18 Ruvell Martin 6-4 217 23 1 Saginaw Valley State FA-06
    WR/KR 81 Cory Rodgers **** ( doubling on ST's) 6-0 186 23 R Texas Christian D4a-06
    WR 6 Calvin Russell 6-0 190 20 R Tuskegee FA-06

If we go with 6 WR's as HC Mike McCarthy implied, then we need three (3) more WR's. I see us with only 5 actve WR's on the 53-man roster unless we cut down elsewhere. Given that ,we do 'in fact' go with 6 WR's.

    (Total = 11 of 19)

That leaves only 8 spots open on " D " and ST 's.

I would add Brady Poppinga, Roy Manning and Kenny Peterson as locks.

Also, Roman will be back as #2 at least.

Yup ! I wouldn't bet against any of those choices either HH.

I'm pulling for Popp to have an injury free TC and Season and certainly Peterson is growing with the team, and Manning came on with a bang last season.

I'm pretty sure Ingle Martin is going to be a lock at #3 QB as well. I don't see us bringing in anyone else...and Martin is far more talented than the other guys.

My guess is that they'll put Poppinga on the PUP (like that alliteration?) so they can give a young guy a chance early in the season. It's a way of keeping an extra player for a six week tryout.

Roman ain't no lock to make this team. If he has a poor training camp and if Underwood makes any progress from last year then Roman is going to be shown the door to make room for Culver.

            Lets look at open positions.

Left guard is pretty much a done deal with Colledge

Right guard has been handed to Coston at the moment, but Spitz could just as easily take it away.

Center, hopefully this is going to be a battle in training camp. White, Wells, and Spitz will be intrenched in a war for the number 1 spot. Most likely Wells will come out on top but White was so impressive last year in training camp he made the active roster. The kid has talent, just not the size. Spitz is going to make an impact some where on the offensive line, and Spitz will battle to be a starter as a rookie, but in reality his value will be in his flexiblity at center and guard.

Wide reciever, all but Donald Driver has a spot on this football team. Sometimes all I hear on this forum is Rod Gardner this and Rod Gardner that, but the truth is the guy has proved very little in this league other than he has a cracked egg for a brain when things aren't going well for him. He is a typical Clemson player, looks like Tarzan and plays like Jane. The fact is, Ferguson has the spot as the second wide out right now and everyone else is going to be chasing him. The race might not be real long if Ferguson proves once again that he can't stay on the field because he is brittle. It will also be short if he can't stay on the same page with #4. Boerichter might be the veteran with the most to lose. He has two young cats in Jennings and Martin on his heels and if he can't break away from atleast Martin and Rodgers then he is going to be shipped to the Canadian Football League. Martin and Rodgers will most likely be fighting it out for the 6th spot. Yes, I think this team is going to carry 6 wide outs on their roster because of the injury situation that hit them last year at this position. Rodgers was a fourth round selection but he has yet to impress anyone as a wide receiver, or for that matter as a punt returner on special teams. McCarthy wants Packer People and guys that get into gang fights and discharge hand guns might not fit that bill.

Defensive tackle, Ryan Pickett has all but shored up his starting spot, but at the Eagle tackle, Colin Cole, Cullen Jenkins, and Cory Williams will be in a dog fight through out training camp for the starting position. All are going to be guaranteed at least 20 snaps a game, but it will come down to who protects the linebackers better, and who can clog the middle by taking up the most blockers. Right now I would tip my hat to Collin Cole in accomplishing that feat.

Strong Side Linebacker, Right now Ben Taylor is running with the #1s and that will most likely be the case until the pre-season. It is his job to lose, and the coaching staff looks in no hurry to move Hodge or Barnett to the strong side. Poppinga could push Taylor, but he is still months away from being able to actually play football. Manning was impressive in training camp last year, but tailed off when the regular season began. He hit the rookie wall in the first week of the season.

Nickel Back, Carroll is still leaps and bounds ahead of Hawkins, but Hawkins has the speed and quickness that very few football players have. He is a elite athlete, but his technique is still terrible. Carroll is a perfect fit for the nickel spot, he can lock down in the slot. Hopefully he can make good on his commitment to growth of maturity.

Strong Safety, Manuel is not running with the first unit, but is that because they are just apeasing Roman right now, or is it because of the injury suffered in the Super Bowl? Either way Manuel should come away with the starting job by the end of the pre season, hopefully Roman will put his energy into putting the stamp on fools instead of running his mouth about competition.

Punter, Sander was the worst draft pick in the last 10 years. Drafting a punter in the third round will get you fired, picking a punter in the third round that has done nothing but struggle will get you shipped off to Houston as a offensive quality control coach. Ryan has out punted Sanders in the OTAs but that doesn't mean much, Ryan has to prove he can be consistent through training camp and during pre-season games. If Ryan can do that then it will be hard for Sander to keep his job.

              Excellent thread Woody.

              Observations:

I don't think Najeh is a "lock" yet because of his injury history.

I don't think Cory Rodgers is a lock either because he's really struggled fielding kicks so far, and I don't think he'll make the team just as a WR.

Woodson might be the 6th receiver MM was referring to. It frees up a roster spot. Except the guy needs to show up and learn the playbook at some point.

              Otherwise I'm in agreement.

                Thanks Scott:

When I did my assessment I didn't factor in 'the injury factor' as that is adversity, that is difficult enough to deal with in the normal season.

I like Cory Rodgers chances alot because first, although there's not alot invested in him, he is a 4th Rd. draft pick and I believe selected more for his ability to play ST's as a KO and punt return specialist as a WR. He is the man to replace Antonio Chatman and CB/WR Will Blackmon will get that same consideration as well.

Good point Scott. Rod Woodson ( Special Assignment - WR) I missed that one, not back on this stuff a week yet. I indeed hope it's wide open, straight up and fair in the WR competition to give Favre some real weapons this Season.

                      Nutz:

That assessment of your is really solid as I see it. I wasn't aware that Marquand Manuel is somewhat hampered by injury still.

It will be interesting to see if S Marviel Underwood can lay on some smashing hits in the TC Ex. Series and 'in fact' overtake Mark Roman. I havn't read too much positive to date on S Tyrone Culver.

                        Nutz,

I think Wells has the center spot pretty well locked. He is small, but he'd be the one who can run the field in any Zone schemes.

Have you seen or heard much about Moll?If we have a good year, we are gonna need one of these kids to come out of nowhere and play up a storm. I'm already counting on the top picks like Hawk & Colledge. I'd like 2-3 more like Spitz or Moll to come out of the blue and do the job for us.

From what we have so far on Tony Moll he has to pick it up KYPack, but TC is 7 weeks away. He had a couple of false starts that got the fiery Jags upset, is all I've read on him to date.

Oh . . . . he's got to get a helmet on that head 'real fast'.

                            I liked Nutz post too.

I wouldnt' say Henderson is a lock. Leach and Brown are both good prospects at the position IMO. I think Henderson is going to have to really show he hasn't lost anything.

We certainly need someone at FB who can take the short pass and move down field for those 6-8 yard gains to pick up those third and longs.I want a FB that seldom miss's on that short swing pass, that gets us those drive savers in the clutch.
