  • Sources: Favre told to report when Packers practice begins

GREEN BAY, Wisc. -- Packers quarterback Brett Favre was told not to report to training camp today until 3 p.m. ET, when the team is scheduled to practice, and is not likely to take part in that practice, sources told ESPN's Ed Werder.

That follows a five-hour meeting between Favre and Packers coach Mike McCarthy, during which McCarthy told Favre he did not want him on the practice field unless he is satisfied with and committed to the team's new direction at quarterback -- namely, with Favre's former understudy Aaron Rogers as the starter, Werder reported.

McCarthy had scheduled a news conference for 9:30 p.m. ET to talk about his plans for Favre. But the news conference was called off because McCarthy was still meeting with the quarterback. The Packers said they would try to reschedule the news conference for Tuesday.

Both Favre and McCarthy drove out a back gate at Lambeau Field at 12:22 a.m. ET on Tuesday, nearly 5½ hours after their meeting began. Favre waved to a small crowd of fans and media from his dark red SUV, and McCarthy followed immediately behind him in a black SUV.

After being reinstated and added to the Packers' active roster, Favre took and passed a physical examination and conditioning test. Then he was scheduled for a meeting with McCarthy, who still needs to be convinced that Favre is committed to playing football in 2008.

"That's a great question," McCarthy said Sunday night. "That will be one of our topics of conversation."

The Packers reluctantly embraced Favre's forced return to the football field Sunday, after failing to come to a financial agreement that would manage to make Favre happy while staying retired. Rodgers, meanwhile, says he's ready for a potential competition with Favre after serving as his backup for three seasons.

ESPN reporter Ed Werder and The Associated Press contributed to this story.

        Very key.

Well, that's that then. Where do you think he's going?

TO be fair, ESPN and their crack staff of website gurus have the same title.

I think the title is right. It says Favre is not supposed to report UNTIL 3:00, and that he will not participate. So maybe he's just supposed to watch today.

Favre not likely to practice today with team
                11 a.m.
Though there’s no definitive word, it now appears unlikely that Brett Favre will be on the field today at 2 p.m., when the Green Bay Packers return to training camp practice.

The team still has not rescheduled the news conference where it planned to reveal how it would handle Favre’s return to the team – originally scheduled for Monday night at 8:30 – that was postponed until this morning, and it seems unlikely that one will be held before the practice.

Favre and Packers coach Mike McCarthy met until the late hours of Monday night and then were seen leaving Lambeau Field separately at 11:22 p.m. Those meetings appear to have resumed this morning.

Overnight, several Internet reports said that during the meeting it became evident that there would not be an open competition at quarterback between Favre and Aaron Rodgers.

Citing sources, ESPN.com’s Ed Werder reported that McCarthy told Favre he did not want him on the practice field unless he is satisfied and committed to the team’s new direction at quarterback, which is that Rodgers will be the starter.

Meanwhile, FoxSports.com reported, according to its sources, that Favre was adamant that he wanted to do what was in the best interest of the locker room and admitted this distraction was not what his teammates needed. Fox’s Jay Glazer also said that Favre agreed that an open quarterback competition would not be in the best interests of the locker room.

What remains unknown is whether the two sides have worked out an agreement that would allow Favre to remain a member of the team in some capacity or whether trade talks with other teams, perhaps the New York Jets, have been rekindled.
So they're back at it, it seems.

Favre and MM are meeting right now. Brett was told not to report to practice today unless something is worked out. Still no PC scheduled unfortunately.

So, no practice is scheduled? Man, Favre is really messing up the teams offseason. I thought he didn't want to be a distraction.

Practice is on, Favre just isn't going to be there.
