PACKERS WERE STILL TRYING TO PEDDLE FAVRE TO THE BUCS
Posted by Mike Florio on August 5, 2008, 12:34 p.m. UTC

So on Monday, when quarterback Brett Favre was making his triumphant return to Green Bay and the Packers presumably were preparing to launch an “open competition” at the position, the team was still trying to trade Favre to a team other than the Minnesota Vikings.

Per Adam Schefter of NFL Network, the Packers spent part of Monday working on a potential trade with the Buccaneers.

Now that Favre has been reinstated, the Packers can trade to any team without Favre’s approval, as long as the team is willing and able to immediately absorb $12 million in cap space if Favre refuses to restructure his contract. The team also must be willing to join the media spotlight with the Packers, and to deal with Favre if he refuses to report.

Favre’s options at that point would be to fail to show, which would expose him to fines in excess of $15,000 per day, or to retire again, and face the possibility of having to pay back a portion of his past signing bonus to his new team.

Coincidentally, the Bucs did just that with Jake Plummer a year ago, giving the Broncos a seventh-round pick that would have become a fourth-rounder if Plummer had reported. Plummer didn’t show, and the Bucs ultimately got $3.5 million from Plummer for a seventh-round pick.

Time is not on Brett's side. If he wants to play this year for the Vikings, or anyone else other than the Packers, he needs to get into camp pronto.

He doesn't need much time in the Packers camp. He has rapport with this group of receivers, and understands the intricacies of this offense.

If he wants to play somewhere other than the Packers this year, time is not on his side. IMO

ALLEN CURIOUSLY ABSENT FROM BUCS PRACTICE
Posted by Mike Florio on August 5, 2008, 2:20 p.m. UTC

As the Favre turns, we’ve been told that Bucs G.M. Bruce Allen is nowhere to be seen at practice on Tuesday. The official word is that he had a previously-scheduled meeting “out of town,” and that Allen isn’t in Green Bay.

Still, folks with knowledge of the organization tell us that it’s unusual, if not unprecedent, for Allen to be missing from a training camp practice.

It’s possible that Allen isn’t in Green Bay, but that’s he’s in some other location working on a potential trade for Packers quarterback Brett Favre. If Bus Cook isn’t in Green Bay with Favre, then Allen very well could be in Mississippi with Cook.

Or maybe Allen is simply having his annual colonic.

Regardless, the bizarre circumstances regarding the Favre situation and the fact that Allen rarely if ever misses practice makes this worth mentioning.

Also Bus Cook spotted rumors are more prevalent than Elvis sightings.

trade him to the bucs for the rights to Hardy Nickerson and a conditional 7th round pick.

If Favre goes to Tampa for the love of playing football, I will start to respect him again. Might even miss him.

Didn't like that deal the first time.
