Harris to learn spleen diagnosis on Wednesday

Cornerback Al Harris should learn Wednesday whether he will miss the rest of the Green Bay Packers' season because of the torn spleen he sustained in Monday’s loss to the Dallas Cowboys.

Harris’ agent, Jack Bechta, said Tuesday the tests done on Harris were sent to two specialists, who were expected to give their diagnoses and recommendations to Harris on Wednesday.

Harris probably either will need surgery or will wait for the spleen to heal. Either way, he likely would miss several months, which almost certainly would keep him out the rest of the season.

Harris, 33, is an 11-year veteran and has played in 83 consecutive regular-season games since joining the Packers in 2003. He has played in 163 consecutive NFL regular-season games.

A doctor called 107.5 today and said Al probably had two choices.

1. Take the season off and let the spleen heal

2. REmove the spleen, be back on the field in 4 weeks and have life long immune system problems and various other health risks.


The doctor said Al needs to shut it down and do the right thing for his body. I agree. Al Harris plays football the right way. I'll miss watching him play but obviously health is a very precious thing and Al (or anyone) needs to put that well before football.

Probably because they're not sure if the tear is going to heal itself or continue bleeding. If it's bad enough to require surgery, that would obviously show up in the CT. But if it's a milder tear (which this case sounds like) you start dealing with a specialist to estimate recovery time.

I don't think Al's gonna be seeing the field again for quite a while.

Al needs to stop putting himself in front of the packer's needs. Al should willingly put his health at risk....to die while playing for the packers is the height of glory.

I'm sure his life insurance and pension will take care of his kids. Try to imagine the pride they will feel knowing that dad died for his team. You can't teach those kind of life lessons. That is commitment!!
