WHAT'S A META-PHOR?

I've been known to do an occasional political post in other forums. Well, I got off on this tangent with some metaphors about the Packers, so I decided to expand it and send it to PackerPundit. Regarding Canada, I said "PERCEIVED easier target". Since they haven't gotten hit either, it wouldn't be right to say they are easy to hit, but since al Qaeda has been shut down from completing any strikes in the U.S., they may go after the one THEY THINK they can hit.

It's like the U.S./Bush/Dept. of Homeland Security is Al Harris, so the enemy thinks they can complete one on Canada--Ahmad Carrol, but he is better than they think. Also, the FBI--Nick Collins is usually help out, as happened in this Toronto 17 terrorist thing. Some would say Mexican border security is our Mark Roman--giving up way too much yardage--illegals, even if not touchdowns--terrorist hits. While we didn't pay the big money for a "fence"--a high-priced free agent Safety, we did do a low-cost upgrade in that area--Marquand Manuel.

Actually, you could say that Brett Favre is Bush's handling of the war in Iraq. After overwhelming the enemy the previous season--the military phase, Favre stumbled last season, a prime factor in it being a bad year. Can he get it turned around in the late stages of his career for a couple of more Super Bowls--the '06 and '08 elections?

Ahman Green--Rumsfeld is getting old and may be on the way not even be back, but Donald Driver--Condoleeza is looking as sharp as ever.

Look for the Offensive Line--the American military to rebound, despite inexperience in some key positions, and lead the drive to success. Where is the political left--the irrational Bush-haters in this whole group of metaphors? They are the injuries. They contributed strongly to the bad times in the recent past, and even though they will try to ruin this season too, it's doubtful they will be able to mess things up two years in a row.

OFF THE WALL PREDICTIONS

Let me preface this by saying, my big prediction last season was that Kevin Barry would start at Guard and whatshisname, the 6'9" guy who got cut would assume Barry's role in the U71. I further predicted that the 6'9" guy would catch at least one TD pass on the goal line.

One guy I expect to shine this year is Marc Boerigter. He is the kind of tool Favre has seldom if ever had, a big McCaffrey-type wideout. Favre throws more passes than most QB's to receivers who have pulled up in a spot-- as opposed to running a pattern. Boerigter should be good for that. I also expect him to get some snaps as a deep threat tight end, like Shannon Sharpe at Denver. When the Safety has to start cheating up to stop the run, an opponent becomes vulnerable to a tight end deep over the middle. Donald Lee should get in on that action too.

I see lots of negativity in various forums regarding Will Whitticker. I'm predicting right here and now that Whitticker retains his starting spot and thrives in the zone blocking scheme. The guy is big, but he impressed me as very mobile also last season. One of the hallmarks of the zone blocking scheme is for linemen to get to the second level--find and neutralize linebackers. I see Whitticker doing this better than most.

I previously had Mark Roman pegged as being gone. I'm hereby upgrading him to bubble player. I'm not 100% sold on Marquand Manuel. He's a feast or famine-type of free agent, and he seems like a candidate for chronic nagging injuries--I hope I'm wrong about that. Roman just might come back with less pressure and an attitude to improve, and sneak in and do much better than last year--or not.

Longshot rookies who could surprise:
Leo Bookman -- a big and scary fast wideout--if he can catch and can take coaching, he could beat out some people.
Montez Murphy -- a raw but big and fast free agent DE who could beat Kenny Peterson for the fourth DE spot.
Tyrone Culver -- a good size supposedly fast also Safety who could beat out some higher rated people.
Dave Tollefson -- a seventh round pick who I predict is converted to Strongside Linebacker, and ends up either on the injured list or practice squad, but with a chance for the future.

We'll see what happens, but this team is a lot more talented than a lot of negativists will admit, and if this coaching staff is as sharp as I hope they are, it could be a really good season.

KEYS TO PACKER
SUCCESS IN '06

Unlike some, who wreak of negativity to the extent it almost seems like they WANT to see a bad season for the Packers in '06, I'm on record since long before free agency and the draft as stating that the Packers are literally set up for success this year.

Nothing is a sure thing, of course, but with the returnees from the injury ruined season a year ago, the easy schedule that comes with last place in the division, the abundance of cap room going into free agency, and the high draft position, it seemed, and still seems like a pretty damn solid prediction to me for the Packers to be well above .500 and go deep into the playoffs.

So what are the key variables?
In order (in my opinion):

First is Favre returning to form has to top the list, but in my mind, there isn't much doubt of that, being that frustration over injuries robbing him of talent around him was probably responsible for his bad play last season. While he lacks a superstar receiver--other than possibly Driver, he has a good assortment of competent wideouts. I particularly like Boerigter, who could also be effective as a deep threat tight end in some situations.

Second would be the Offensive Line adapting to the new zone blocking scheme and development of what I consider young talented players like Wells, Whittaker, and Coston, possibly along with this year's draft picks.

Third would be an unknown like Marquand Manuel doing the job at Safety, where Mark Roman was without a doubt the Packers' biggest defensive weakness last season.

Fourth, it looks like Charles Woodson is going to be handed Ahmad Carrol's job, a mistake IMO. For the pass defense not to be worse than the high level of last season, either Woodson has to play like he did a few years ago--a worrisome prospect--or the coaches need to switch back to Ahmad Carrol--quickly if Woodson isn't cutting it.

Fifth, either Cundiff or one of the two young kickers needs to come through at least as well as Longwell last season on placekicking and better on kickoffs. Thompson did exactly like I hoped, NOT spending big money for a free agent kicker. I think there is a very strong chance for one of these three doing the job.

Not on my list of keys to success are:

Solid play at Running Back--I don't see Gado and Davenport doing a great job as even variables--a lot closer to givens. As for Ahman Green, he is a question mark coming off the injury, but I'm expecting the runing game to be great even if Green is nothing like in his prime--and if he is like he was a couple of years ago, that's frosting on the cake.

I also did not put a big pass rush on the list. I'm expecting Kampman and Montgomery to start at Defensive End, with KGB as a third down specialist, but even if the rush is no better than last season, the defense in general should be top notch--much improved from the already a good defense last season.

I also left out linebacking, as I don't even consider great play there to be a variable. With Hawk and to a lesser extent, Taylor, it should be a sure thing. The only thing (other than injuries, of course) that could hurt would be stupidly switching Barnett out of the middle. I'm fairly sure, however, the coaching staff isn't even remotely considering that. It's just a figment of ignorant imaginations.

So there it is. The sky's the limit. You can quote me on that.

Please just keep in mind TPB is a moron from JSO who believes A. Carroll is our best D back, the pack is going 13-3 and GW is the greatest president of all-time so take his opinions for what they are insani ty.

I always kind of liked Tex's schtick at JSO, and I think it'd be cool if he'd do some posting here. The guy was always good for a debate, and you had to love his disarming approach of characterizing everyone who disagreed with him as a gutless, unamerican, nattering nabob of negativism.

Tex's "column" for the Pundit is a hell of a lot better than his posts.

Last year when we were all freakin' out over the guard situation (with good reason) the JS printed and article that went along these lines, "fear not, it may look bleak, but the good 'ol GBP front office will pull off something to get us two good guards"! About two days later, Tex made a post in which he said, "Now that we've solved the guard problem", or words to that effect.

Now that is just plain stupid. You can't drink directly from the Packer PR hose, but Tex does it all the time. I like positive thinking as well as the next man, but reality has a place here, too.

The problem with Tex and Tank types is that they screw up the forum. You are reluctant to post something because the "broken record" guy will wake up and go on a tear. Like Nutz said, their half interested in their pet topics, half interested in the forum reaction.

Don't bother to get Tex over here, just publish his Pundit stuff. it's slightly interesting, way more so than his posts.
