I've been thinking of this game all week long to the point where I'm read to post my random blog.
Tennessee is game for a defeat. They are coming off of an emotional high beating the Indianapolis Colts, who they have not been able to handle in the past. Some are calling it a passing of torches. The Titans might start believing in this. They come off a hard fought win on a Monday night football game. Green Bay comes off of a bye week giving the coaches more time to game plan against the Titans and get the running game turned around.
If you recall last year our running game was different after the bye week with the coaches pledging to improve and make whatever necessary changes they need to for th better. They should have had a similar goal this week.
Teams never want to lose games; but if there is a game for Tennessee to choose to lose it would probably be this one. Green Bay is a non conference and non divisional game and Tennessee has built a nice lead within their division. The coaches could use this game as a wake up call.
Green Bay also appears to have the type of offense that might be able to mix things up well enough to keep the Titans defense somewhat off balance. At the so called "talent positions" I think Green Bay might be stronger.
Aaron Rodgers is a strong step up from Kerry Collins
The Packers WR's are a strong step up from the Titans WR's
The Titans TE's may get a slight edge but I'd call it even
The Titans RB's are a strong upgrade from Green Bay's
The Packer CB's are a strong upgrade from the Titans
The Titans Safeties(thanks to free agent signing Chris Hope) are better than Green Bay's
If you believe that Green Bay can win this game, you have faith that the Green Bay coaching staff can utilize the speed and talent positions and keep the Titans off balance. Because here comes the bad news.
IF you believe games are won in the trenches you will favor the Titans.
In fact, the data may lead you to believe we are walking into an asskickin and we won't want to "Remember the Titans"
Simply put, Tennessees OL is better than our DL and their DL is better than our OL
Tennessee ranks 4th in rushing offense (145 YPG) while Green Bay is 25th in rushing yards allowed (142YPG). So start your Titan Running Backs
Over the past four games, Chris Johnson has been dominant in compiling 4 TD's, 350 yards, and 4.8 yards per carry. And he's not even the goal line back. Lendale White has at least one TD in six of the last seven games and has 10 on the season. Over the past five games Green Bay has surrendered six TD's and the Titans have accumulated twelve. Their OL and rushing attack is nothing short of dominant while GB's rushing defense has been a glaring weakness. The numbers let us know tomorrow will be trouble.
On the flip side, I don't think I need to document Green Bay's struggles with the running game to anybody in here. At least Grant has scored his first TD and is averaging over 95 yards per game the past two. I'd argue about 25% of that is Grant and 75% of that is our OL is just poor; but regardless of the reason our weakenss falls into a strength for Tennessee. They are #10 in run defense allowing just over 90 yards per game and 3.7 yards per carry. They have only surrendered one 100 yard game all season and I'm not expecting another one tomorrow based on the facts above.
So in breaking down tomorrow's game, if you have the ability to throw your homerism out the window you have to choose to what theory you subscribe to with your prediction.
Are games won in the trenches, or will more of a finesse team orchestrate an effective game plan to limit the Titans overpowering OL and DL ?
Can Bob Sanders effectively bring up some safeties and use some occasional blitzes to contain the run, or will Vanilla Bob choose to play smash mouth defense with a OL that should be able to handle our DL.
Can Mike McCarthy effectivly use a mixture of playcalling to keep the Titans Defense off balance, keep Albert Haynesworth from walking all over Darryn College, and most important keep Aaron Rodgers healthy and in the game ?
Or will the Wist like theories hold true tomorrow in that the Packers are soft on both sides and they can't win the big one against a solid smash mouth team. We'll find out soon.
Feel free to post your thoughts
Cheers,
