  • Who has met your expectations??

When I look back at this year there is one thing that stands out: the number of players who didn't meet my expectations at all, whether it be improving or even playing at the same level as last year.

Simple process - mark who has met, exceeded, or failed to meet your expectations. I'm picking and choosing who I decide to rate, so if there's anybody else you wanna add go ahead.

    QB
Rodgers = (I think I predicted somewhere around 24 TD's and 12 INT's for the year on him and he is very near there)

    RB
    Grant -
    Jackson +
    Hall =
    Kuhn =

    WR
    Jennings +
    Driver -
    Jones -
    Nelson +
    Martin =

    TE
    Lee -
    Humphrey -
    Finley =

    OL
    Clifton
    Colledge
    Wells
    Spitz
    Tauscher
    Moll
    Sitton
    Barbre

I'm not really any good when it comes to watching O linemen and rating them so I'm gonna leave them alone.

    DL
    Jenkins +
    KGB -
    Montgomery =
    Hunter =
    Thompson =
    Pickett -
    Jolly =
    Cole +

    Poppinga =

    Bishop =

    CB
    Woodson +
    Harris +
    Williams +
Blackmon - as CB and = on returns
    Bush -
    S
    Collins +
    Bigby -

Re: Who has met your expectations??

            QB
Rodgers + (I expected more struggles early, has been pretty damn good, overall.)

            RB
Grant - (Injuries and another slow start. Has picked it up of late though.)
Jackson = (Has had a few nice plays, but still barely gets any touches.)
Hall = (Solid, but expected as much)
Kuhn = (Playing pretty well, I guess...)

            WR
Jennings ++ (Having his best year yet. Expected possible changes to pass distribution with Rodgers.)
Driver = (Is not getting the ball as much as in the past, but I expected him to start seeing a bit of a dip.)
Jones - (Where was he, even when not injured? Only recently sighted.)
Nelson = (Playing well early, but has just been decent since.)
Martin = (Paying well for a 4th/5th guy.)

            TE
Lee = (Wasn't getting down the field much, but has been getting a fair number of balls.)
Humphrey = (Didn't have much expectations, doing OK).
Finley - (Thought he could be better as a receiver....still waiting to see it.)

            OL
            Clifton -- (Ugghhh)
Colledge + (His most consistent year yet, has actually been seen pushing some guys down field.)
Wells = (Solid player, if a but undersized)
Spitz + (Better than I expected)
Tauscher - (Has had his struggles, but is still a solid tackle, I just expected a lot from him.)
Moll = (Not much for expectations)
Sitton + (Was challenging for starting position until injury...not expected)
Barbre = (Also challenged for starting position early...I didn't expect him to start though)

            DL
Jenkins = (Played well, but got injured)
            KGB - (Lost a step)
            Montgomery = (No expectations)
            Hunter = (No expectations)
Thompson + (Surprised that he has been OK for how much he has had to play.)
Pickett - (Expected him to dominate like last year)
Jolly - (Expected improvement, has regressed, if anything)
Cole = (Was hoping for improvement, but just expected him to be a rotation guy)
Harrell - (If it wasn't for the injury, I might have given him an '=', nothing special, but he has been able to eat up some minutes)
Kampman = (Playing well, with no other pass rush threats)

            LB
Hawk - (Injured? Struggled in both positions he has played)
Barnett = (Played well, defense went south fast after he was out...some people should reconsider their opinions of him)
Poppinga - (Too many missed tackles/bad angles. Didn't expect him to be able to cover...and he can't)
Chillar + (Played very well. I wasn't sure what to expect)
Bishop + (Played better than I expected for a backup. That's not saying a whole lot though.)

            CB
Woodson + (Lights out, but expected him to be damn good)
Harris = (Shutdown as always, lived up to the hype)
Williams ++ (Where did he come from?)
Blackmon - (Hasn't done much, IMO. Had a big return called back, but more times than not does not get anything special. Coverage is adequate at best)
            Bush = (no expectations)

            S
Collins ++ (At one time I thought Collins would never figure it out. Maybe that time at CB in practice was all he needed?)
Bigby = (Injured, but played pretty well when he was in. His presence probably freed up Collins to roam a bit more.)
Rouse - (Seems a step late more times than not.)

            P
            Frost -- (Ouch)
Kapinos + (So far, so good)

            K
            Crosby + (no complaints)

I am intrigued by the ratings.
Most of you rate Jenkins to have met or exceeded your expectations even though he played only 4 games.
On the other hand, many of you rate Grant to have not met your expectations even though he played hurt early and has been solid the last 6 games, averaging nearly 5yards/carry. Even with his slow start, he has nearly 1000 yards, could easily end the season with about 1200 yards. What did you expect from him?

If Grant had played the first six games like he has the last six (110 carries/516 yards) then been lost for the season due to injury, would he have meet you expectations? You seem to give Jenkins a pass for being out for the season, but will not give Grant consideration for playing injured at the start of the season.

You seem to give Jenkins a pass for being out for the season, but will not give Grant consideration for playing injured at the start of the season.
Jenkins played well while he was in, as good or better than I expected. He was then injured, call it a pass if you want. He exceeded while he was on the field, that was what my judgement was based upon.

IMO, Grant was bad at the beginning of the season. Right now, Grant is now playing at about the level I expected. I think Grant is a good back, I just expected him to be in the neighborhood of his play from last year. Yet it took him most of the year to get there. Not what I expected.

I don't believe that an injury explains all of his problems early. Yes, it may have made a difference in his explosivness and might have shown up had he ever got in a foot-race. Quite frankly, his vision/decisions seemed to really suck and he was going down on first contact. Not what I expected out of him based on how well he did those things last year.

I know you did, which is why I referred to "most" and "many" of the ratings instead of all of the ratings. I was talking about the ratings generally. Some qualified their rankings of Grant and/or Jenkins because of their injuries, but others have Jenkins as "+" or "=" and/or Grant as "-".

For me personally, there are a few events that led to the expectations and rating for Grant and Jenkins.

Grant ended last year on a tear. That, and the fact that he signed a new contract in the offseason, led to the higher expectations for him. To answer your question, if he had played the first games of the year like he has the last six and had then gotten injured, I would have given him an =(-). Even as he has improved during the year, he still doesn't look like as explosive as he did last year.

Jenkins played poorly last year, and I really didn't have that big of expectations for him. He played really well the few games he did play this year. His injury history is disappointing, but his play was a +. Subsequently, if you had asked me to rate Jenkins' play last year it would have been a - for the same reason I mentioned above for Grant. Jenkins ended the 06 season pretty well and signed the new deal in the offseason, leading to higher expectations.

                          My ratings:

"+" players - Rodgers, Jennings, Harris, Woodson, Collins, Williams and Goode.
Comments on "+" players. - Harris is borderline for me because of the missed games, but makes it because I expected his performance to decline. It hasn't. Woodson I expected to still play well, but he has played like a top CB at the prime of his career. Jennings and Collins both took steps to be considered for Pro-Bowl. That earns a "+". Williams has been better than I hoped. Goode has been solid, invisible which is good for a long snapper. I was worried that a guy off the street with one week to practice might have some snafus. He hasn't.

"-" players - Clifton, Tauscher, Barbre, Lee, Jones, Jenkins, Humphrey, Pickett, Jolly, Harrell, Montgomery, Barnett, Hawk, Poppinga, Bigby, Rouse, Lee, Frost.
Comments on "-" players. our starting tackles both struggled at times. That's a declined from the consistent play I have been spoiled to expect. I expected Barbre to push for a starting job, he never did. A pick as high as Lee should at least be seen from time to time. He wasn't. To my way of thinking, Jenkins is a clear, unequivocal "-". My expectations were that he would play the season and play well. By playing only 4 games he clearly did not meet my expectations. It may not be his fault, but he is a "-" none the less. The rest simply have not played as well as last year, or not well at all.

"=" players - everyone else. Comments - I expect nothing from backup QBs, and that is exactly what they did. Everyone else fell in where I expected.

                              I'd give Finley -, Humphrey =.

I'd also give Kampman a big -. He has played way below the star quality level of last season, and there is apparently no injury to use as an excuse.
