  • Packers roll over $7.3 million to 2009.

    Per the Milwaukee Journal:

In effect, the Packers rolled over $7.278 million onto their 2009 cap by signing guard Nevin McCaskill.....
    ....
The requirements for McCaskill to have earned the $7.278 million incentive were tied to special-teams exploits such as blocking six punts. He never got into a game..
The article goes on to state that the Packers have $105.157 million committed against the 2009 salary-cap. The cap is expected to be about $123 million. With the roll-over, the Packers should have about $25 million in cap space to work with in the off-season.

Here, at least, we are consistent. We should have a pool to see when the first poster finds a way to spend the entire uncommitted cap with three theoretical FA signings. I pick 4:23 PM, March 1st.

And yes, Bretsky, in Green Bay, FA signings are mostly theoretical!
Bud Adams told me the franchise he admired the most was the Kansas City Chiefs. Then he asked for more hookers and blow.

I think we should lock up Jennings, Collins, Kampman, Jolly, Pickett, Spitz, Colledge and Tramon. I'm sure that will eat up a chunk.

If McCaskill had actually gotten into a game, maybe he would have blocked a punt. If we had blocked six punts in close games this year, that probably would have been good for 4 more wins. We win 4 more games and we likely win the division.

        Damnit TT....

This looks like simple chicanery to me. Like a defensive back, first you learn the rules and then you learn how to break them (or bypass them) and get away with it . Why have rules when you can just pull stunts like this?

A guy like Nevin McCaskill must be a little burned that the Pack moved all this money into next years cap, while he get the pittance that is his salary.

It's the business, but you know it has to fire some guys up.

So cap guys can look like geniuses, get promoted to actual football positions and make it easier on everyone else. And yes, I am talking about the Jets.

You don't think his agent explained that he was just doing the team a favor? Or is it just the large dollars that were never spent?

Nobody blocks six punts in a season--not the greatest special teamers in history. Why would such a ridiculous incentive be put in a contract? Was the plan all along to not have it fulfilled so the money rolled over? Or did they merely stumble into this? If it was intentional, maybe there are a couple other such items to surface.
What could be more GOOD and NORMAL and AMERICAN than Packer Football?

We should definitely lock up hald those guys with Jennings, Collins, and Kampman given the highest priority. Tramon is a rising solid player that should get a decent 3-4 year deal that is modest. As far as Spitz and Colledge...I'm not sure what they should get but they are not star OL.

They've been doing similar incentives every year for some time now. That is the roll-over money you see each year. Usually they rework some guys contract and put in an incentive that is not likely to be reached, often near the end of the season when they can be sure of it. I assume they also give the player a little more money than before they had reworked it.

I think this is the precursor towards "saving" cap room for the draft a few years in the future when Ted realizes his dream to own the entire 7th round.

We'll need a lot of cap $'s to allocate the $250k bonuses to the 32 draft picks. So, therefore we have to "save up".

That's the year that Green Bay enters a second team in the Arena league. They'll play in the Hutson center.

Of course it was intentional, this is exactly how manipulation of the cap works. Why do you think the Vikings have close to 20 million to work with again this year? Unearned incentives that carry over year to year along with avoiding "dead money" or signing bonus money taken off the cap for a player that has left the orginazation or was released before their contract expires, are the ways to avoid salary cap hell and maintain the option of being active in free agency.

But he'll have a good story to tell while sitting at the bar. "Did I ever tell you about the time I was THIS close to making $7M from the Green Bay Packers... "

A guy like Haskill gets paid the minimum whether he agrees to help them out or not. At least he was pretty much guaranteed not to get cut this way. Maybe they even gave him an extra $100,000 just to seal the deal. Both sides win.
