  • Jarron Gilbert SDSU Prospect

He's listed as a DT at 6'6" 280, but he's extremely athletic and might be an interesting 3-4 DE prospect. It really depends on what he runs the 40 in, right now it says he runs a 5.00 second 40 which may be a little slow for the DE position but if he cracks the 5 second mark he could very well play DE in a 3-4.

That last sentence is so full of laughs I'm not sure what to think.

If he has 33"+ arms, cracks 5.00 in the 40, can jump 32-33" and put up 25+ reps, he's a solid 3-4 DE prospect.

funny you mention this guy. I saw this youtube clip of him a month or so ago jumping out of a 3 ft pool...it's pretty crazy.

todd mcshay also mentioned him in his "scouting combine" preview video on espn.com as someone to watch during the combine. mcshay said in an interview, gilbert showed his enormous wingspan by touching his fingertips of one hand to the ground and the other to the top of the door. as i was watching the video i thought the same thing to myself, he could be an intriguing 3-4 DE prospect.

here's another clip of him squatting 635 and deadlifting 655.

I really don't know whether or not he can play DE. But from what I've seen of him at DT and his athleticism make him an extremely interesting prospect.

Interesting prospect. Had an unbelievable 22 tackles for loss this season. According to Sporting News, his strong point is penetrating gaps, not overpowering people.

Could really care less about what he runs a 40 yard dash in. Especially for a 3-4 DE which their main job is to hold the line.

However a very interesting prospect. Sammie Hill Lee is another interesting one for a NT.

You'd like to think that, but find me a starting 4-3 DT that failed to run at least a sub 5.10 40 or 1.75 10. Bust, bust, bust, bust....

With 3-4 DE's that line is 5.0 40 and 1.75 10, not a lot of success slower than that.

With 4-3 DE's the bust line is 4.8 40 and 1.70 10, the bust probability goes through the roof when that is all the faster they are.

The combine tests are the greatest at separating good prospects from great ones, but they are great at separating bad prospects from good ones.

"Good football players" that test pitiful tend to bust.

I just watched some game film on him and noticed that he played DE the majority of the time. I also noticed that he has an excellent burst in the first 10 yards, really good closing speed, and and amazing motor. He makes a lot of plays on the opposite side of the field and chases down the QB's/RB's quite a bit of the time.

I'm really beginning to like this guy as a prospect and I think he may be someone that TT pursues. He fits the mold of the type of players TT likes. He's a player from a smaller school, he puts up impressive numbers, and he seems to be a high character person.

Maybe so. But who knows, maybe TT is a big Youtuber.

Maybe Gilberts could rise like Mario Williams did. He was a freak athletically. He sounds like he would be worth taking in the 2nd or 3rd rd for sure.

If that 4.81 holds for Gilbert, he's going in the first.

Edit: He jumped 35.5" 1st round guarantee.

At his height and wingspan, a 4.81 40 and 35.5" vert makes him physically the best 3-4 DE not only in the 2009 draft, but in the NFL. Castillo had that honor, but just lost it to Gilbert.

There's a guy who just made himself a few cool million by wowing them at the combine. Happens every year.

More interesting this year is Andre Smith costing himself at least that much!
