  • Sad News: Emmit Smith Out at ESPN

By BARRY HORN / The Dallas Morning News
    bhorn@dallasnews.com

After two difficult seasons, Emmitt Smith and ESPN are parting ways. His contract is up, and it won't be renewed.

That the split was inevitable became obvious during the network's Super Bowl coverage. ESPN didn't bother to invite Smith, the former Cowboys great and surefire Hall of Famer, to Tampa.

"We thank Emmitt for his contributions to ESPN and work ethic the past two years. We wish him all the best," ESPN spokesman Bill Hoffheimer said.

I though he was terrible. On the bright side, he might have been better than Eric Dickerson and Joe Namath.

Sad news? The guy's an idiot. He has not broadcasting skills, period. Maybe he could stick to the Just For Men commercials.

I wonder what former NFL talent whose mastery of the English Language is more than a little suspect ESPN will bring in next.

At the very least, Emmit was good for a laugh.

Agreed...Emmitt was awful. I did enjoy watching ESPN when Steve Young said something intelligent (often) and Emmitt was there to grab the spotlight like a rambling drunken sailor saying something that your drunk buddy on Packer night would probably say, and then watching Steve bite his tongue and comb his fingers through his hair trying to think of what that had to do with anything. Emmitt was a great RB, but is definitely not a smart man to say the least.

At least Joe Namath was funny. This classy moment wished Snake could see more of Joe on TV:

Snake's Twitter comments would be LEGENDARY.........if I was ugly or gave a shit about Twitter.

Emmit Smith is not stupid. He probably came from a household of poorly educated people who didn't speak english according to the rules.

you would think that three years at Florida University might help.

I admire the guy for taking a risk at something he is not very good at. he should have failed his audition, maybe ESPN is the real fool here.

Could his replacement possibly be named Favre?
What could be more GOOD and NORMAL and AMERICAN than Packer Football?

The best thing about that one is that the guy at ESPN whose job it is to put up the little graphics at the bottom to go along with what is being said has NO IDEA WHATSOEVER as to what is most relevant to what Emmit is saying.

Team to beat in the NFC? 49ers offensive production? Seahawks rushing stats? WHAT'S GOING ON?!?!
